In this study, we proposed modified settling basins transformed by substituting the downstream sill for low head weirs such as generic labyrinth weir and inclined crest labyrinth weir worked as internal baffles. Laboratory experiments were carried out to understand hydraulic characteristics inside of the settling basin to improve the efficiency of sedimentation rate. For a quantitative analysis, we suggested the headwater ratio($H_t/P$), the magnification ratio(L/W) and the inflow rate per total crest length($q_L$) as primary analysis indexes for sedimentation efficiency. Six different types of settling basin were used for labscaled pilot tests by distinguishing with internal structures. Based on results, the variation of headwater ratio with the change of magnification ratio would highly affect the deposition efficiency(%) and it was improved under specific condition that repeating arrange number(N) of labyrinth weir was between 2 and 4. Also, the regression analysis showed that initial condition and shape for improving sedimentation efficiency were plotted on the graph for both $q_L{\geq}3.5cm^2/s$ and $L/W{\leq}3.5$. It would be expected that the geometrically optimized labyrinth settling basin could be designed with proper deposition efficiency for inflow rates of influent and required area of settling basin utilizing the proposed analysis index in this study.
In this study, the removal efficiency of the wetland in terms of particulate matter and dead water zone through the application of baffles in the sedimentation were simulated with the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to determine the design of a cost-effective constructed wetland. As a result, it was analyzed that the application of the baffle in the sedimentation tank affect the flow and sedimentation rate. Fine particles such as $2{\mu}m$ and $5{\mu}m$ showed high sedimentation rate when the baffles are installed horizontally. large particles such as $10{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$ showed also high deposition rate when the baffles are installed vertically. In addition, the vertical baffles is considered to be more efficient than other baffle types in terms of maintenance since the particulate matter are concentrated in narrow areas. Therefore, it is considered that the selection of the most applicable type of baffle depends on the design purpose of the wetland to be constructed.
The coagulation or flocculation of cohesive clay suspensions is one of the most widely used treatment technologies for contaminated water. Flocculated clay can transport pollutants and nutrients in ground water. Coagulants are used to accelerate these mechanisms. However, existing coagulants (e.g., polyacrylamide, polyaluminum chloride) are known to have harmful effects in the environment and on human health. As an alternative, eco-friendly coagulant, this study suggests ${\varepsilon}-polylysine$, a cationic biopolymer fermented by Streptomyces. A series of sedimentation experiments for various ${\varepsilon}-polylysine$ concentrations were performed, and the efficiency of sedimentation with ${\varepsilon}-polylysine$ was estimated by microscopic observation and light absorbance measurements. Two types of sedimentation were observed in the experiments: accumulation sedimentation (at 0.15%, 0.20%, 0.25% ${\varepsilon}-polylysine$) and flocculation sedimentation (at 0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0% ${\varepsilon}-polylysine$). These sedimentation types occur as a result of the concentration of counter ions. Additionally, the performance of ${\varepsilon}-polylysine$ was compared with that of a previously used environmentally friendly coagulant, chitosan. The obtained results indicate that flocculation sedimentation is appropriate for contamination removal and that ${\varepsilon}-polylysine$ functions more efficiently for clay removal than chitosan. From the experiments and analysis, this paper finds that polylysine is an alternative eco-friendly coagulant for removing chemical contaminants in groundwater.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of various types of coagulant on dewaterability and settleability of sewage sludge for the application of dewatering process. Cationic organic coagulants and inorganic coagulants of the aluminium base were used; PAC (Poly Aluminium chloride, $Al_2O_3$ 17%) and C-210P (0.2%). After Jar test, PAC 26 mg/L and 0.2% C-210P 55 mg/L was decided as the optimum concentration of the coagulant according to zeta potential measurement. pH, alkalinity and viscosity were measured in all experiments and the data on sedimentation characteristics is analyzed by SDI, SVI sedimentation rate and solid flux. The SRF(Specific Resistance of Filtration) experiment was conducted with the result of single and dual injection system as the dewaterability experiment. As a result, the organic coagulant making large floc has good characteristics of sedimentation and agglutination. Also, it is observed that the organic coagulants injection has a better dewaterability efficiency of coagulants under the condition of the lowest SRF value, followed by dual and inorganic coagulants injection.
A flotation process has a shorter processing time and needs less space than a sedimentation process. Dissolved air flotation process (DAF) is an efficient flotation method and used in a conventional wastewater treatment process. However, DAF requires the circulation of water containing compressed air and requires expensive installation and operation cost. Plasma Air Flotation (PAF) process is able to float flocs by micro bubbles generated from underwater plasma without the circulation of bubbly water and additional saturators. Therefore, PAF can be an alternative solution overcoming economic barriers. In this study, Humic acid removal efficiency by PAF process was compared with that of sedimentation process. 44.67% and 87.3% reduction rate based on UV 254 absorbance has been measured in sedimentation and PAF respectively. In particular, PAF in the flocculation zone can dramatically remove humic acid from water. In flocculation zone, PAF can separate organic matters but sedimentation cannot.
This study was performed to compare finished water quality among three different processes. A detailed assessment of performance was carried out during the five months of operation. Finished water quality was evaluated on the basis of parameters such as Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), $UV_{254}$ absorbance, haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP), geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), heterotrophic bacteria and total coliform bacteria. The treatment processes were Process 1 (coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation-sand filtration-ozone-GAC), Process 2 (coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation -microfiltration-ozone-GAC), and Process 3 (coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation- sand filtration-GAC), compared side by side in the pilot testing. Process 2 was found to have better removal efficiency of DOC, $UV_{254}$ absorbance, HAAFP and heterotrophic bacteria in comparison with process 1 and process 3 under identical conditions. Geosmin, 2-MIB and total coliform bacteria were not detected in finished water from each process.
As a method to reduce the total phosphorus in sewage treatment plant, we applied the integral type slow mixing/sedimentation fiber filtration system to compare the control methods for the sewage effluent and the reject water. It was analyzed that about 92.4 kg T-P/day should be removed in order to satisfy the final concentration of phosphorus of 0.2 mg T-P/L, which is reinforced effluent standard. Therefore the total phosphorus removal efficiency should be 96% for sewage effluent and 69.2% for reject water (dehydrated filtrate) respectively. The system operation cost to achieve the target of total phosphorus removal efficiency was assessed. It has been found that the treatment cost of the reject water containing high concentration of phosphorus with a low flow rate is reduced to about 1/2.4 of the coagulant cost and about 1/120 of the electricity cost, compared to that of the sewage effluent treatment. Also the economics of the integral type slow mixing/sedimentation fiber filtration system and the general coagulation and sedimentation system were compared. It was evaluated that the development system was more economical because the installation area of the integral type slow mixing/sedimentation fiber filtration system was about 1/7 smaller than that of the general coagulation and sedimentation system, and the annual operation cost including the required amount of coagulant and electricity cost of the development system was lowered about 1/1.7 than that of the general system.

This study was initiated to improve the cooling water quality by chemical coagulation and sedimentation in steel mills. Due to the inefficient flocculation in the settling tanks of blast furnace cooling water systems, the solid particles in the cooling water overflow accumulate and clog the cooling system. To protect the cooling water system from such fouling, proper flocculants must be continuously used. Laboratory tests were performed for the indirect cooling water system of a plate mill. The batch test in the gas scrubbing cooling water system of a blast furnace showed that the proposed coagulant was more effective for the improvement of coagulation and sedimentation than the existing one. During the tests, cationic flocculants were more effective than use of only an anionic flocculant. The suggested combination of anionic and cationic flocculants can probably improve the turbidity removal efficiency of the cooling water. Proper control of the overflow rate by the designed residence time would help turbidity removal efficiency in the settling tank. In addition, the settling can be enhanced by adopting rapid and slow mixing alternatively. Scale problems in blast furnace cooling water system were reduced to some extent by efficient settling.
The structural components of microorganism are quite related to the toxin and environmental conditions. The vegetative and dormant cells are quite affected by the physical and chemical environments to survive and they will be dormant when they are in the extreme environment. The mechanism to activate the microorganisms however, is not well defined yet in the area of activation state and sporulation state through the analysis of EPS. Other than that even the main mechanism of prior to acquisition of analysis values is not well understood. Therefore, what kind of specific environment to affect the activation and sporulation will be discussed through the analysis of the extracellular polymeric substances(EPS). EPS are a high molecular weight mixture of polymers presenting both outside of cells and interior of microbial aggregates. They are a major complex materials in microbial aggregation for sustaining them together in a three dimensional matrix. Three commonly used extraction methods were applied to this study their effectiveness and quantification in extracting EPS from several Bacillus microorganisms and activated sludge. Three extraction methods used for this study are regular centrifugation with formaldehyde (RCF), Steaming, and EDTA extraction. The results of EPS contents such as the quantitative proteins, carbohydrates and the ratio of protein versus carbohydrate from the several species with the several specific methods showed in this research. This study aims to get comparable results of the quantitative production of EPS and the effectiveness of sedimentation for Bacillus microorganisms and activated sludge from several wastewater treatment plans. The results revealed that the protein amount extracted was the highest by the Steaming method of three extraction methods before sporulation and the carbohydrate amount extracted was the highest by the RCA method of three extraction methods after sporulation. The higher amount of protein compared with carbohydrate from Bacillus microorganisms affected higher sedimentation efficiency, however it could not be found the relation between the EPS production and sedimentation efficiency for the activated sludge.
The techniques which have been used for the fecal examination of ruminant infected with the pancreatic flukes, Eurytrema Pancreaticum, were reviewer in their efficiency to detect the ova. One of modified fecal examination: H.F.E. (hydrochloric acid-formalin-ether) sedimentation method was devised in this study. Efficiency in the detecting ability of the fluke eggs with H.F.E. sedimentation method was determined by a series of repeat tests. Among 20 head of cattle known to harbor 1-5 adult worms of the pancreatic fluke, 75% of the infected cattle were detected, and among 60 head of cattle known to harbor more than 6 adult worms, 95% of the infected cattle were detected with H.F.E. sedimentation method. The procedures of the H.F.E. sedimentation method are as follows; 1) Take the sample 5-10 gm., emulsify throughly with 20 ml. of 50% hydrochloric acid in a cup. 2) Strain this mixture through one or two layers of wet surgical gauze into 15ml. centrifuge tube. 3) Washing the cup with 5ml. of 50% hydrochloric acid and strain again. 4) Centrifuge at 2,300 rpm. for 2 minutes. 5) Pour off the supernatant fluid. 6) After the sediment mixed with 10% formalin, stand for 5 minutes. 7) Add 2-3ml. of ether, shake vigorously up and down, after the top of the tube covered with thumb. 8) Centrifuge at 2,300 rpm. for 2 minutes. 9) Loosen the fecal plug in the tube by ringing with an applicator stick. 10) Quickly, but carefully, pour of all, but the bottom layer of sediment. 11) Thoroughly mix the sediment, pour on a slide (or pick up it with a pipett), mount with a cover glass. 12) Examine carefully.
