  • This article explores economic models that show the optimal level of information security investment in the presence of interdependent security risks, Using particular functional forms, the analysis shows that the relationship between the levels of security vulnerability and the levels of optimal security investments is affected by externalities caused by agents' correlated security risks. This article further illustrates that, compared to security investments in the situation of independent security risks, in order to maximize the expected benefits from security investments, an agent should invest a larger fraction of the expected loss from a security breach in the case of negative externalities, while an agent should spend a smaller fraction of the expected loss in the case of negative externalities.

  • This study expands the current body of research by exploring multiple scenarios of insufficient and excessive IT security investments caused by interdependent risks and the interplay between IT security investments and cyber insurance. A key finding is that organizations experiencing interdependent risks with different types of cyber attacks (i.e., targeted and untargeted attacks) use different strategies in making IT security investment decisions and in purchasing cyber insurance policies for their information security risk management than firms that are facing independent risks. The study further provides an economic rationale for employing insurance mechanisms as a risk management solution for information security.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the operational performances by the investment level of information security in companies. The theoretical background summarized the meaning of information security, management information security, and network security. The research process was carried out in four stages. As a result of the analysis, the level of information security was classified into four groups, and the difference in operational performance was confirmed. According to the categorical regression analysis of the three dependent variables, independent variables such as network threats, non-network threats, executive information security awareness, industry, organizational size, and information security education all affected information security regulations, in-house information security checks, and information security budget investments. The theoretical implications of this study have contributed to updating the latest information security theory. Practical implications are that rational investments should be made on the level of information security of companies.

  • Many organizations are threatened by numerous information security attacks which are resulting in information security incidents. To prevent information security incidents, organizations invest on various information security measures like information security products, monitoring services and security training and educations. However they do not have enough knowledge about measurable utilities of information security investments. Since there is little studies empirically examining the effect of information security investments, this research aims to find out utilities of information security investment. We especially focuse on information security service investments. This study examined the data from the survey on information security for business sector which was conducted by Korean information & security agency. We utilized negative binomial regression model, which is a suitable model for over-dispersed count data. We found out that an investment on information security education and vulnerability testing have direct impact on reducing information security incidents. This research academically contributed to shed light on the utility of information security investments on reducing information security incidents. This research practically contributed to providing information security investment guideline for organizations which want to reduce information security incidents efficiently.

  • To provide a development strategy on the method which assesses a potential risk of nationwide emerging IT infrastructure in planning and design phase, and to classify the assessment result into 5 levels is the goal of this research. The development strategy provided in this paper could improve a benefit-cost-ratio of investments on emerging IT infrastructure. With a premature assessment of the potential risks of a nationwide emerging IT infrastructure which needs astronomical amount of public funds, it could show a way of systematic investments on security systems and improve a benefit-cost-ratio of investments on emerging IT infrastructure. Also, this approach might improve the safety of nationwide IT infrastructure. It could identify and provide an optimized solution for the potential risks of nationwide IT infrastructure.

  • To establish an effective security strategy, business enterprises need a security benchmarking tool. The strategy helps to lessen an impact and a damage in any threat. This study analyses many aspects of information security management and suggests a way to deal with security investments by considering important factors that affect security manager's decision. To address the different threats resulting from a major cause of accidents inside an enterprise, we investigate an approach that followed ISO17799. We unfold a criminology theory that has designated many measures against the threat as suggested by General Deterrence Theory. The study proposes a coherent model of the theory to improve the security measures especially in handling and protecting company assets and human lives as well.

  • To get legitimacy of a security investment, the analysis of ROI about the security investment is required. In this paper, we suggest a practical quantitative model with considering factors that do decision-making of optimized security investment difficult. This model makes use of the value of a residual risk to decide the best information security solution and considers a corelation of response techniques of the information security solution against each threat to do exact decision-making.

  • For the last two decades, there has been much research on computer abuse from the perspective of the general deterrence theory based on objectism, which covers security policy, security awareness programs, and physical security system. The traditional view offered by the general deterrence theory indicates that security policy, security awareness, and security system play a major role in preventing computer abuse. In spite of continuous organizational efforts and investments based on these systematic factors, the incidence of computer abuse in organizations is still rapidly increasing. This paper proposes another perspective-the social control theory based on subjectism-in preventing computer abuse. According to the social control theory, organizational trust, which comprises organizational attachment, commitment, involvement and norms, can prevent computer abuse by reducing insider's computer abuse. The aim of this article is to assess the role of organizational trust come from attachment, commitment, involvement, norms in preventing computer abuse. The results indicate that both organizational trust and deterrent factors are effective in preventing computer abuse.

  • Due to the development of various information systems and PC, usage of Internet has rapidly increaced which lead to malicious codes rapidly spreading throughout the Internet. By the increasing use of the Internet, the threat by malicious codes has become a serious problem. In particular, Small businesses which lack investments in security personnels makes it impossible to verify and measure the servers and PC infected with malicious codes. We have analized malware infection types by using malicious code detection technology of security monitoring service and proposed countermeasures in small businesses.

  • In this study, AHP analysis was conducted through a survey that was organized by 9 job categories. The results show that sustainable operation risks have the highest priority level among all criteria with management interest having the highest priority level within sustainable operation risks related attributes. The most important risk attributes among stakeholder risks appeared to be asset security and cargo and conveyance security, with education and training being the most important among regulatory risks. Effective management and response to the risks from export controls on strategic trade require an understanding of supply chain security and compliance programs, effective training programs, investments for development of security systems that meet international standards. In addition, the government needs to focus on developing professionals and providing support for companies with compliance programs, working closely with businesses.
