  • Even though the mechanism and the nature of radiation induced pneumonitis, esophagitis and gastroenteritis were detailed by many authors, complicated secondary infection is still serious problem, sometimes fatal, even today. We experience a case of multiple pyogenic abscess in subcutaneous tissue of the back and both kidneys which could not differenciate from multiple metastatic sarcoma grossly, and report with review of literatures, lab findings.

A Calculation of the Cosmic Radiation Dose of a Semiconductor in a Geostationary Orbit Satellite Depending on the Shield Thickness (차폐체 두께에 따른 정지궤도위성용 반도체의 우주방사선 피폭 계산)

  • Cosmic ray is composed of nuclear particles moving at a light speed. The cosmic ray affects the performance and the reliability of semiconductor devices by ionizing the semiconductor material. In this study, the radiation effects of protons, electrons, and photons, which compose the cosmic ray, on the GOS(Geostationary Orbit Satellite) were evaluated using the Monte-Carlo N-Particle code. The GOS was chosen due to the comparatively long exposure to the cosmic ray as it stays in the geostationary orbit more than 10 years. As the absorbed dose of semiconductor from electrons is much larger than those of protons, photons, and the secondary radiation, most of the radiation exposure of the semiconductors in the GOS results from that of electrons. When we compare the calculated absorbed dose with the radio-resistance of semiconductor, the Intel 486 of the Intel company is not suitable for the GOS applications due to its low radio-resistance. However RH3000-20 of MIPS and Motorola 602/603e can be applied to the Satellite when the aluminium shield is thicker than 3 mm.

UVB Irradiation Increases the Expression of Pro-inflammatory Cytokine in Jurkat T Cells Exposed to Triglycerides

  • Abscopal effect is a form of secondary immune response that occurs in ionizing radiation therapy, resulting in changes in the immune response through activation of immune cells such as macrophages and T lymphocytes. UVB causes DNA damage similar to ionizing radiation and causes similar intracellular reactions, so it is often used as an alternative in research on the effects of ionizing radiation. In a previous study, we found that pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, increased in Jurkat T cells exposed to TGs. In this study, we confirmed the effects of UVB irradiation on T lymphocytes exposed to TGs, similar to the effects of ionizing radiation. As a result, it was shown that the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IFN-γ in Jurkat T cells exposed to TGs increased by UVB irradiation. In addition, it was confirmed that the increase in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines caused by UVB was caused by the activation of iNOS protein. This is very similar to the immune response that occurs when T lymphocytes are exposed to TGs. These results suggest that activation of iNOS protein is involved in the increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines caused by UVB irradiation in T lymphocytes exposed to TGs.

Development of Oxygen Combustion Burner for Industrial Gasification and Smelting Furnace (산업용 가스화 용융로를 위한 산소 버너의 개발)

  • Multi-hole type oxygen combustion burner was developed for industrial gasification and smelting furnace. We investigated characteristics of flame, radiation transfer, and soot emission in the convectional oxygen burner with respect to the feeding condition of fuel and oxygen. Regarding the results of the conventional burner, we designed new burners which have larger fuel consumption rate and radiation heat transfer. We changed the size and hole number and shape of the exit plane of the burner. In addition, the performance of the burner was tested with respect to the feeding condition of the fuel and air: Normal Diffusion flame(NDF) and Inverse Diffusion Flame(IDF). We investigated the flame configuration, radiation heat transfer, and soot formation by using a CCD camera, heat flux meter, and Laser Induced Incadescence(LII), respectively. The stable operating condition was obtained by the flame configuration and the flame of the burner which has dented exit plane was more stable in whole operating conditions. The characteristics of radiative heat transfer were sensitive to the feeding condition of reactants and the flame of 75% primary oxygen and 25% secondary oxygen of the IDF case shows maximum radiation heat transfer. The soot volume fraction of the flame was measured in the axial direction of the flame and the amount of soot volume fraction is proportion to the radiation heat transfer. As a result, we can get the optimal operating condition of the newly designed burner which enhances the characteristics of flame stabilization and radiation heat transfer.

  • Proton therapy facility, which is recently installed at National Cancer Center in Korea, generally produces a large amount of radiation near cyclotron due to the secondary particles and radioisotopes caused by collision between proton and nearby materials during the acceleration. Although the level of radiation by radioisotope decreases in length of time, radiation exposure problem still exists since workers are easily exposed by a low level of radiation for a long time due to their job assignment for maintenance or repair of the proton facility. In this paper, the working environment near cyclotron, where the highest radiation exposure is expected, was studied by measuring the degree of radiation and its duration for an appropriate level of protective action guide. To do this, we measured the radiation change in the graphite based energy degrader, the efficiency of transmitted beam and relative activation degree of the transmission beam line. The results showed that while the level of radiation exposure around cyclotron and beam line during the operation is much higher than the other radiation therapy facilities, the radiation exposure rate per year is under the limit recommended by the law showing 1~3 mSv/year.

Morphological Alteration of Cell Organelles Affected by UV-B Radiation in Rice Leaf Tissues (자외선에 의한 벼 엽 세포 소기관의 형태적 변화)

  • This experiment was performed to observe morphological changes in rice leaf tissue caused by a successive UV-B radiation. Effect of UV-B radiation on the structural alteration of tissue was not visually found, however, Photosynthate containing phosphate was sharply reduced in proportion with an increase of UV-B radiation. Fundamental components of cuticle layer were being degraded after 6 h of UV-B radiation compared to the control. UV-B-induced mesophyll cell appeared altered because of water stress, the shape of chloroplast appeared to be considerably shrunk and chloroplast thylakoid membranes were severely destructed. Primary cell wall of UV-B-stressed tissue was entirely scattered or disappeared, and the secondary cell wall due to lignin synthesis and deposition resulted in being thickened, almost 2-times, compared with the control.

cDNA cloning and expression pattern of Cinnamate-4-Hydroxylase in the Korean black raspberry

  • Cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H) is a key enzyme in the phenylpropanoid pathway, which is responsible for synthesizing a variety of secondary metabolites that participate in development and adaptation. In this study, we isolated a full-length cDNA of the C4H gene from the Korean black raspberry (Rubus sp.) and found that this gene existed as a single gene. By comparing the deduced amino acid sequence of Rubus sp. C4H with other sequences reported previously we determined that this sequence was highly conserved among widely divergent plant species. In addition, quantitative real time PCR studies indicated that the C4H gene had a differential expression pattern during fruit development, where gene expression was first detected in green fruit and was then remarkably reduced in yellow fruit, followed by an increase in red and black fruit. To investigate the two peaks in expression observed during fruit development and ripening, we measured the flavonoid content. The content of the major flavanol of Korean black raspberry fruits was determined to be highest at the beginning of fruit development, followed by a gradually decrease according to the developmental stages. In contrast, the content of anthocyanins during the progress of ripening was dramatically increased. Our results suggest that the C4H gene in Korean black raspberry plays a role during color development at the late stages of fruit ripening, whereas the expression of C4H gene during the early stages may be related to the accumulation of flavanols.

Particle Beam Focusing Using Radiation Pressure (광압을 이용한 입자빔 집속)

  • A novel technique for fine particle beam focusing under the atmospheric pressure is introduced using a radiation pressure assisted aerodynamic lens. To introduce the radiation pressure in the aerodynamic focusing system, a 25 mm plano-convex lens having 2.5 mm hole at its center is used as an orifice. The particle beam width is measured for various laser power, particle size, and flow velocity. In addition, the effect of the laser characteristics on the beam focusing is evaluated comparing an Ar-Ion continuous wave laser and a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. For the pure aerodynamic focusing system, the particle beam width was decreased as increasing particle size and Reynolds number. For the particle diameter of 0.5 ${\mu}m$, the particle beam was broken due to the secondary flow at Reynolds number of 694. Using the Ar-Ion CW laser, the particle beam width becomes smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system about 16 %, 11.4 % and 9.6 % for PSL particle size of 2.5 ${\mu}m$, 1.0 ${\mu}m$, and 0.5 ${\mu}m$ respectively at the Reynolds number of 320. Particle beam width was minimized around the laser power of 0.2 W. However, as increasing the laser power higher than 0.4 W, the particle beam width was increased a little and it approached almost a constant value which is still smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system. The radiation pressure effect on the particle beam width is intensified as Reynolds number decreases or particle size increases relatively. On the other hand, using 30 Hz pulsed Nd-YAG laser, the effect of the radiation pressure on the particle beam width was not distinct unlike Ar-Ion CW laser.

Performance Analysis of Low-level Radiation Shielding Sheet with Diamagnetic Nanoparticles

  • In this study, the authors attempted to produce a medical radiation shielding fiber that can be produced at a nanosize scale and that is, unlike lead, harmless to the human body. The performance of the proposed medical radiation shielding fiber was then evaluated. First, diamagnetic bismuth oxide, an element which, among elements that have a high atomic number and density, is harmless to the human body, was selected as the shielding material. Next, 10-100 nm sized nanoparticles in powder form were prepared by ball milling the bismuth oxide ($Bi_2O_3$), the average particle size of which is $1-500{\mu}m$, for approximately 10 minutes. The manufactured bismuth oxide was formed into a colloidal solution, and the radiation shielding fabric was fabricated by curing after coating the solution on one side or both sides of the fabric. The thicknesses of the shielding sheets prepared with bismuth oxide were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 1.0 mm. An experimental method was used to measure the absorbed dose and irradiation dose by using the lead equivalent test method of X-ray protection goods presented by Korean Industrial Standards; the resultant shielding rate was then calculated. From the results of this study, the X-ray shielding effect of the shielding sheet with 0.1 mm thickness was about 55.37% against 50 keV X-ray, and the X-ray shielding effect in the case of 1.0 mm thickness showed shielding characteristics of about 99.36% against 50 keV X-ray. In conclusion, it is considered that nanosized-bismuth radiation shielding fiber developed in this research will contribute to reducing the effects of primary X-ray and secondary X-ray such as when using a scattering beam at a low level exposure.

Synthesis of [18F]-Labelled Nebivolol as a β1-Adrenergic Receptor Antagonist for PET Imaging Agent (베타1-아드레날린 수용체를 표적으로 하는 심근영상제로서 18F 표지된 nebivolol의 합성)

  • Selective ${\beta}_1$-agonist and antagonists are used for the treatment of cardiac diseases including congestive heart failure, angina pectoris and arrhythmia. Selective ${\beta}_1$-antagonists including nebivolol have high binding affinity on ${\beta}_1$-adrenergic receptor, not ${\beta}_2$-receptor mainly expressed in smooth muscle. Nebivolol is one of most selective ${\beta}_1$-blockers in clinically used ${\beta}_1$-blockers including atenolol and bisoprolol. We tried to develop clinically useful cardiac PET tracers using a selective ${\beta}_1$-blocker. Nebivolol is $C_2$-symmetric and has two chromane moiety with a secondary amino alcohol and aromatic fluorine. We adopted the general synthetic strategy using epoxide ring opening reaction. Unlike formal synthesis of nebivolol, we prepared two chromane building blocks with fluorine and iodine which was transformed to diaryliodonium salt for labelling of $^{18}F$. Two epoxide building blocks were readily prepared from commercially available chromene carboxylic acids (1, 8). Then, the amino alcohol building block (15) was prepared by ammonolysis of epoxide (14) followed by coupling reaction with the other building block, epoxide (7). Diaryliodonium salt, a precursor for $^{18}F$-aromatic substitution, was synthesized in moderate yield which was readily subjected to $^{18}F$-aromatic substitution to give $^{18}F$-labelled nebivolol.
