A harmonic quadrature demodulation method to extract the second harmonic component from focused ultrasound signals after a single transmit-receive event is proposed. In the proposed method, the focused ultrasound signal is converted into baseband inphase and quadrature components by multiplying with sine and cosine signals both having twice the center frequency of the transmitted signal and filtering the two modulated signals. The quadrature component is then passed through a Hilbert filter to be added to the inphase component, which leaves only the envelope of the second harmonic component. A novel phase estimation technique is employed in the proposed method to avoid the phase mismatch between the focused signal and the two modulating signals. The proposed method is verified through both theoretical analysis and computer simulations. It is shown that compared to the pulse inversion scheme the proposed method provides almost the same results for stationary targets and significantly improved harmonic to fundamental ratio for moving targets.
An alternately assembled polycation-anionic dye film was prepared on a precursor assembly of poly(allylamine)hydrochloride (PAH) and poly(sodium styrenesulfonate) (PSS) or of poly (djallyldimethyl)ammonium chloride (PDDA) and PSS. The (PAH/PSS) precursor assembly gave better adsorptivity to the anionic dye than the (PDDA/PSS) one. Four kinds of anionic dyes (EB-T, AR-17 AR-18, AR-27) with different numbers of sulfonate substituents were compared. The extent of dye assembling was higher for the dye with a smaller number of sufonate substituents. Second harmonic generation (SHG) was clearly observed from the films. The SHG signal and the absorption intensity correlated well up to four polycation/dye bilayers, while further assembly did not increase the SHG signal appreciably. Second order nonlinear coefficients for ten bilayer assemblies were the order of pm/V.
This paper presents an experimental study on the detection and location of nonlinear scattering source due to the presence of fatigue crack in a laboratory specimen. The proposed technique is based on a combination of nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy(NEWS) and time reversal(TR) focusing approach. In order to focus on the nonlinear scattering position due to the fatigue crack, we employed only one transmitting transducer and one receiving transducer, taking advantage of long duration of reception signal that includes multiple linear scattering such as mode conversion and boundary reflections. NEWS technique was then used as a pre-treatment of TR for spatial focusing of reemitted second harmonic signal. The robustness of this approach was demonstrated on a cracked specimen and the nonlinear TR focusing behavior is observed on the crack interface from which the second harmonic signal was originated.
A method for the nondestructive read-out of the memory in ferroelectric thin films is demonstrated using the detection second harmonic currents introduced in the ferrolelectric capacitor as a response to an ac signal. The sign and phase of the second harmonic current depends on the polarized state +$P_r or -P_r$, The studied ferroelectric PZT thin film is found to have desirable features for the use as a memory element. This method and material seems as a promising approach for the nonvolatile memory storage.
The electrodynamic loudspeakers should have a wide dynamic range to reproduce various sound levels. When the input signal is small, the radiated sound from the loudspeaker is not so much distorted. However, for large input signal with low frequency component the radiated sound is significantly distorted due to the nonlinearities of the loudspeaker. The suspension, damping, and magnetic flux of loudspeaker are the main sources of the nonlinearity. Such electromechanical parameters related to harmonic distortion have been represented by a polynomial model for diaphragm displacement, while each of the polynomial coefficient is evaluated by using the principle of harmonic balance experimentally. Based on the polynomial model, we designed a compensator for nonlinear harmonic distortion of direct radiator loudspeaker. Than observer is used to estimate the displacement of the loudspeaker diaphragm, which is rather difficult to measure directly in the conventional setting. The usefulness of the designed compensator is demonstrated by numerical simulations. Simulation results show about 30db decrease at the second and third higher harmonic distortions. We carry out an experiment on speaker to verify designed controller and nonlinear observer.
In this Paper, a new harmonic imaging technique is proposed and evaluated experimentally. In the proposed method, a weighted chin signal with a hanning window is transmitted. The RF samples obtained on each array element are individually compressed by correlating with the reference signal defined as the 2nd harmonic (2f0) component of a transmitted chirp signal generated in a square-law system. The proposed method uses the compressed 2f0 component to form an image, for which the crosscorrelation term with f0 component should be suppressed below at least -60dB. After experiment, the 6dB pulse width and peak sidelobe level of the compressed 2f0 component were 0.7us and -60dB, respectively. This result shows that the proposed method can successfully eliminate the f0 component with a single transmit-receive event and therefore is more efficient than the conventional pulse inversion (PI) method in terms of frame rate. We also observed that the 2nd harmonic compont starts to decrease for source pressure higher than 210kPa in water, which implies that SNR of the 2nd harmonic imaging using short pulses cnanot be incresed beyond a certain limit.
Closed-loop fiber-optic gyroscope with linear scale factor for a wide dynamic range is demonstrated using a gating process and two-harmonic phase modulation, of which the second harmonic is obtained by a frequency doubler. Also the effects of the second harmonic and duty cycle of gating signal on the linearity of scale factor are estimated theoretically and compared with the measured data. The experimental results show the best linearity of scale factor is about 0.5% within the rotation rate 90.deg./sec. The closed-loop fiber-optic gyroscope with gated two-harmonic phase modulation can be used in the application demanding less sensitive performance and modest scale factor linearity.

A 1.9-GHz linear CMOS power amplifier is presented. An adaptive bias circuit (ABC) that utilizes an AC ground to detect the power level of the input signal is proposed to enhance the linearity and efficiency of the power amplifier. The ABC utilizes the second harmonic component as the input to mitigate the distortion of the fundamental signal. The input power level of the ABC was detected at the AC ground located at the VDD node of the power amplifier. The output of the ABC was fed into the inputs of the power stage. The input signal distortion was mitigated by detecting the input power level at the AC ground. The power amplifier was designed using a 180 nm RFCMOS process to evaluate the feasibility of the application of the proposed ABC in the power amplifier. The measured output power and power-added efficiency were improved by 1.7 dB and 2.9%, respectively.
