  • In this paper, we propose a sparse signal reconstruction method referred to as the matching pursuit with a pruning-based tree search (PTS-MP). Two key ingredients of PTS-MP are the pre-selection to put a restriction on columns of the sensing matrix to be investigated and the tree pruning to eliminate unpromising paths from the search tree. In our simulations, we confirm that PTS-MP is effective in recovering sparse signals and outperforms conventional sparse recovery algorithms.

  • A Harmony Search (HS) and Genetic Algorithms (GA), two powerful metaheuristic search techniques, are used for minimum weight designs of different truss structures by selecting suitable profile sections from a specified list taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). A computer program is coded in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000-OAPI to obtain solution of design problems. The stress constraints according to AISC-ASD (Allowable Stress Design) and displacement constraints are considered for optimum designs. Three different truss structures such as bridge, dome and tower structures taken from literature are designed and the results are compared with the ones available in literature. The results obtained from the solutions for truss structures show that optimum designs by these techniques are very similar to the literature results and HS method usually provides more economical solutions in multi-element truss problems.

  • This study aims at comparing the optimum design of two common types open web expanded beams: with hexagonal openings, also called castellated beams and beams with circular openings referred to as cellular beams. The minimum weights of both beams are taken as the objective functions while the design constraints are respectively implemented from The Steel Construction Institute Publication Numbers 5 and 100. The design methods adopted in these publications are consistent with BS5950 parts. The formulation of the design problem considering the limitations of the above mentioned turns out to be a discrete programming problem. Improved harmony search algorithm is suggested to compare the optimum design of mentioned web-expanded beams to analysis the performance of both beams. The design algorithms based on the technique select the optimum Universal Beam sections, dimensional properties of hexagonal and circular holes and total number of openings along the beam as design variables.

  • A new method is proposed for tracking the optimum points in nonstationary problem via genetic search. Cache Pool to save the past genetic informations is added to population in search using Sexual Reproduction Genetic Algorithm(SRGA). In Cache Pool, elite chromosomes from population are accumulated. A best Individual is made up from these chromosomes in varying environment and inserted into the newly reproduced population every generation. Experimental results indicate changing global optima are accurately identified and followed.

  • In frequency analyses of hydrological data, it is necessary for the interested variables to be homogenous and independent. However, recent evidences have shown that the occurrence of extreme hydro-meteorological events is influenced by large-scale climate variability, and the assumption of homogeneity does not generally hold anymore. Therefore, in order to associate the non-homogenous characteristics of hydro-meteorological variables, we propose the parameter estimation method of probability models using meta-heuristic algorithms, specifically harmony search. All the weather stations in South Korea were employed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approaches. The results showed that the proposed parameter estimation method using harmony search is a comparativealternative for the probability distribution of the non-homogenous hydro-meteorological variables data.

  • This paper deals with the buckling and optimization of a nanocomposite beam. The agglomeration of nanoparticles was assumed by Mori-Tanaka model. The harmony search optimization algorithm is adaptively improved using two adjusted processes based on dynamic parameters. The governing equations were derived by Timoshenko beam model by energy method. The optimum conditions of the nanocomposite beam- based proposed AIHS are compared with several existing harmony search algorithms. Applying DQ and Hs methods, the optimum values of radius and FS were obtained. The effects of thickness, agglomeration, volume percent of CNTs and boundary conditions were assumed. The results show that with increasing the volume percent of CNTs, the optimum radius of the beam decreases while the FS was improved.

  • Traffic signal setting policies and traffic assignment procedures are mutually dependent. The combined signal control and traffic assignment problem deals with this interaction. With the total travel time minimization objective, gradient based local search methods are implemented. Deterministic user equilibrium is the selected user route choice rule, Webster's delay curve is the link performance function, and green time per cycle ratios are decision variables. Three implemented solution codes resulting in six variations include intersections operating under multiphase operation with overlapping traffic movements. For reference, the iterative approach is also coded and all codes are tested in four example networks at five demand levels. The results show the numerical gradient estimation procedure performs best although the simplified local searches show reducing the large network computational burden. Demand level as well as network size affects the relative performance of the local and iterative approaches. As demand level becomes higher, (1) in the small network, the local search tends to outperform the iterative search and (2) in the large network, vice versa.

  • In recent years, there is an increasing interest to optimize the fuzzy logic controller with different methods. This paper focuses on the optimization of a fuzzy logic controller applied to a seismically excited nonlinear building. In most cases, this problem is formulated based on the linear behavior of the structure, however in this paper, four sets of objective functions are considered with respect to the nonlinear responses of the structure as the peak interstory drift ratio, the peak level acceleration, the ductility factor and the maximum control force. The Improved Charged System Search is used to optimize the membership functions and the rule base of the fuzzy controller. The obtained results of the optimized and the non-optimized fuzzy controllers are compared to the uncontrolled responses of the structure. Also, the performance of the utilized method is compared with various classical and advanced optimization algorithms.

  • In the recent decades, various optimization algorithms have been considered for the optimization of structures. In this research, a new enhanced algorithm is used for the size and topology optimization of truss structures. This algorithm, which is obtained from the combination of Crow Search Algorithm (CSA) and the Cellular Automata (CA) method, is called CA-CSA method. In the first iteration of the CA-CSA method, some of the best designs of the crow's memory are first selected and then located in the cells of CA. Then, a random cell is selected from CA, and the best design is chosen from the selected cell and its neighborhood; it is considered as a "local superior design" (LSD). In the optimization process, the LSD design is used to modify the CSA method. Numerical examples show that the CA-CSA method is more effective than CSA in the size and topology optimization of the truss structures.

  • This paper introduces a general purpose Associative Processor(AP) which is very efficient for search-oriented applications. The proposed architecture consists of three main functional blocks: Content-Addressable Memory(CAM) arry, row logic, and control section. The proposed AP is a Single-Instruction, Multiple-Data(SIMD) device based on a CAM core and an array of high speed processors. As an application for the proposed hardware, we present a parallel algorithm to solve a global routing problem in the layout process utilizing the processing capabilities of a rudimentary logic and the selective matching and writing capability of CAMs, along with basic algorithms such a minimum(maximum) search, less(greater) than search and parallel arithmetic. We have focused on the simultaneous minimization of the desity of the channels and the wire length by sedking a less crowded channel with shorter wire distance. We present an efficient mapping technique of the problem into the CAM structure. Experimental results on difficult examples, on randomly generated data, and on benchmark problems from MCNC are included.
