Distribution Patterns of Carbon and Nitrogen Contents in the Sediments of the Northeast Equatorial Pacific Ocean (북동 적도태평양해역 퇴적물의 탄소 및 질소함량 분포특성)

  • The mesoscale environmental surveys were conducted between $5^{\circ}N\;and\;17^{\circ}N$ mainly along the $131.5^{\circ}W$ meridian from 1997 to 2002 to investigate controlling factors of carbon and nitrogen contents in bottom sediments. Sediments of the study area showed zonal distribution pattern depending on latitudinal position and can be classified into four types; calcareous ooze($5{\sim}6^{\circ}N$), siliceous sediments($8{\sim}12^{\circ}N$), pelagic red clay($16{\sim}17^{\circ}N$), and mixed sediments($7^{\circ}N$). Inorganic carbon(IC) contents varied depending on water depth and carbonate compensation depth(CCD). Carbonate materials were well preserved in the low latitude region, where water depths are shallower than CCD. In contrast, the higher latitude region dominated by siliceous sediment and pelagic red clays has low productivity in water column as well as the water depths deeper than CCD. Thus, most of carbonate materials were dissolved, which resulted in IC contents of less than 0.05% in the sediments. Organic carbon(OC) and total nitrogen contents(TN) in siliceous sediments were higher than in pelagic red clay sediments simply because of higher primary productivity in the siliceous sediment dominated area. The contents of OC and TN were lower in the calcareous ooze than in the siliceous sediments. It is attributed to the high input of calcareous material to the bottom due to relatively shallow water depth of the area, which diluted organic matter contents in the sediment. Overall results indicated that water depth relative to CCD, primary production in water column, and sedimentation rate largely controls the large-scale distribution of carbon and nitrogen contents in the study area.

Geochemical Characteristics of Surface Sediments in the Eastern Part of the Yellow Sea and the Korean West Coast (황해 동부 대륙붕과 한반도 서해안 표층퇴적물의 지구화학적 특성)

  • A total of 76 surface sediment samples, collected from the Korean west coast and the eastern Yellow Sea areas, were analyzed for their elemental composition in order to understand the geochemical characteristics of these deposits. The analyzed elements included 9 major elements (Al, Fe, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Ti, P, Mn), 8 minor elements (Sr, Ba, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn), organic carbon and calcium carbonate. Contents of most analyzed elements, excluding K and Ba, were generally low compared to those of average crust. Contents of most elements, except K and Ca, also correlated with sediment grain size, though the degree of relationship varied widely from one element to another. For fine-grained sediments, a distinction could be made between those in the central Yellow Sea and those in the Keum Estuary based on their characteristic elemental composition: the former were rich in Fe, Na, K, Mg, Ca and V, and the latter in Mn, Co and Ni. The element/aluminium ratios, on the other hand, showed that the central Yellow Sea muds were enriched in Fe, Mg, V, Ni, Cu and Zn and depleted in K, Mn, Ba and Sr relative to the mud located near the Korean Peninsula. Based on the analysis of these results, as well as of the influences of particular mineral phases or pollution effects, we could suggest geochemical criteria which can be used in distinguishing muds from the two different sources, the Keum River and the Yellow River: the former by the higher Mn content and the latter by the higher Mg and V contents, relative to each other.

Studies on the EPA(eicosapentaenioc acid) production by marine bacteria (해양세균(海洋細菌)을 이용(利用)한 EPA(eicosapentaenoic acid) 생성(生成)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • This project has been worked out for isolation of EPA-producing bacteria from marine source of sea water, sea sediment and intestinal contents eviscerated from some red-muscle fish such as mackerel, horse-mackerel and spike fish. The samples were precultured on the media of PPES-II glucose broth and then pure-cultured on Nutrient agar and P-Y-M glucose. Lipids extracted from those bacterial mass collected by centrifugation were analysed in terms of lipid class and fatty acid composition. The results are resumed as follows : 1. 112 strains from sea water and 76 strains from sea sediment were tested for their EPA producing capability, but both strains of (SA-67 and SA-91) from the former and four strains(SS-35, 37, 51 and 71) from the latter have been proved to produce EPA above the level of 2% of total fatty acids. The strains such as GS-11, 29, 31, HM-9, 29, B-18, 33, 107, YL-129, 156, 203, 77, 104 and 256 which were isolated from fish intestinal contents, have also produced EPA at higher level than 2% of total fatty acids. 2. Contents of total lipids extracted from the cultures of these strains grown at $25^{\circ}C$, range from 2.8% to 6.9% (on dry weight %), and they are mainly composed of polar lipids($40.9{\sim}52.9%$) such as phosphatidyl glycerol($^{+}cardiolipin$)(?) and phosphatidyl ethanolamine ($33.8{\sim}40.0%$), with smaller amount of free fatty acid ($11.2{\sim}20.2%$). 3. EPA was isolated from a mixture of fatty acid methyl esters obtained from the lipid of each strain by HPLC in silver-ion mode and was identified by GC-Mass spectrometry. 4. The strains of SW-91, GS-11, GS-29, HM-9, B-18 and YL-203 grown at $25^{\circ}C$ have a level of 5% EPA in their total fatty acids, and the GS-11 and HM-9 strains show a tendency of increase in the EPA level with an increase of growth temperature.

Stratigraphy and Paleoceanography of deep-sea core sediments from the Korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS)-97 Area, Northeast Equatorial Pacific (북동태평양 KODOS-97지역 주상 퇴적물의 층서 및 고해양학적 연구)

  • Sediment core samples recovered from the Korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS)-97 area were divided into two or three units according to their distinct changes in sediment colors and chemical and physical properties. Analyses of radiolarian faunas in the sediments and $^{10}Be$ ratios in each unit were performed to reveal stratigraphic and paleoceanographic history of the study area. In the upper part of the sediments, Tertiary radiolarians were mixed at various proportions with Quaternary assemblages probably by reworking process of bottom current and benthic animals. Dissolution of radiolarians was severe in deeper depth and in the Unit III, only few of the fragments of corroded Tertiary radiolarians were detectable. The mid layer of the Unit I belonged to Collosphaera invaginata Zone, the time period of 0.21 Ma. The Unit II belonged to Collosphaera tuberosa Zone with the time period younger than 0.42 Ma which was observed above the Stylatractus universus Zone. The Unit III is assigned to Tertiary, which is younger than the Late Eocene. Composition analyses of radiolarian assemblage and $^{10}Be$ ratio data indicated hiatus periods of more than 3 My between late of Middle Miocene and Pliocene resulting from erosion and dissolution caused by Antarctic Bottom Water. Stratigraphic evidence from radiolaria was well correlated with $^{10}Be$ data. Sedimentation rate during Quaternary can be suggested as 0.15-0.5 mm per 1000 years. Dominance of warm-water radiolaria species and the results reflected minimum climatic changes of tropical conditions.

Sulfate reduction and sulfur isotopic fractionation in marine sediments (해양퇴적물내에서의 황산염 환원과 황의 안정동위원소 분화)

  • Concentrations of sulfate and 6-values of sulfate, $({\delta}^{34}SO_4_){pw}$, dissolved In pore waters were measured from the sediment cores of the two different marine environments : deep northeast Pacific (57-1) and coastal Kyunggi Bay of Yellow Sea (57-2) . Sulfate concentration in pore waters decreases with depth at both cores, reflecting sulfate reduction in the sediment columns. However, much higher gradient of pore water sulfate at 57-2 than 57-1 indicates more rapid sulfate reduction at 57-2, because of high sedimentation rate at the coastal area compared to the deep-sea. The measured 6-values, $({\delta}^{34}SO_4_){pw}$, follow extremely well the predicted trend of the Rayleigh fractionation equation. The range of 26.756 to 61.35% at the coastal core 57-2 is not so great as that of 32.4$\textperthousand$ to 97.8$\textperthousand$ at the deep-sea core 57-1. Despite greater graclient of pore water sulfate at 57-2, the 6-values become lower than those of the deep- sea core 57-1. This inverse relation between the 6-values and the gradients of pore water sulfate could be explained by the combination of the two subsequent factors : the kinetic effect by which the residual pore water sulfate becomes progressively enriched with respect to the heavy isotope of $^{34}S$ as sulfate reduction proceeds, and the intrinsic formulation effect of the Rayleigh fractionation equation in which the greater becomes the fractionation factor, the more diminished values of $({\delta}^{34}SO_4_){pw}$ are predicted.

Explorations of Hydrothermal Vents in Southern Mariana Arc Submarine Volcanoes using ROV Hemire (심해무인잠수정 해미래를 이용한 남마리아나 아크 해저화산 열수분출공 탐사)

  • This paper presents the explorations of hydrothermal vents located in the Marina Arc and Back Arc Basin using the deep-sea ROV Hemire. These explorations were conducted by KRISO and KIOST to demonstrate the capability of Hemire in various applications for deep-sea scientific research. The missions included the following: (1) to search the reported vents, (2) conduct visual inspections, (3) deploy/recover a sediment trap and bait traps, (4) sample sediment/water/rock, (5) measure the magnetic field at the vent site, and (6) acquire a detailed map using multi-beam sonar near the bottom. We installed three HD cameras for precise visual inspection, a high-temperature thermometer, a three-component magnetometer, and a multi-beam sonar to acquire details of the bottom contour or identify vents in the survey area. The explorations were performed in an expedition from March 23 to April 5, 2016, and the missions were successfully completed. This paper discusses the operational process, navigation, and control of Hemire, as well as the exploration results.

Development of Ocean Environmental Algorithms for Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) (정지궤도 해색탑재체(GOCI) 해수환경분석 알고리즘 개발)

  • Several ocean color algorithms have been developed for GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) using in-situ bio-optical data sets. These data sets collected around the Korean Peninsula between 1998 and 2009 include chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), suspended sediment concentration (SS), absorption coefficient of dissolved organic matter ($a_{dom}$), and remote sensing reflectance ($R_{rs}$) obtained from 1348 points. The GOCI Chl-a algorithm was developed using a 4-band remote sensing reflectance ratio that account for the influence of suspended sediment and dissolved organic matter. The GOCI Chl-a algorithm reproduced in-situ chlorophyll concentration better than the other algorithms. In the SeaWiFS images, this algorithm reduced an average error of 46 % in chlorophyll concentration retrieved by standard chlorophyll algorithms of SeaWiFS. For the GOCI SS algorithm, a single band was used (Ahn et al., 2001) instead of a band ratio that is commonly used in chlorophyll algorithms. The GOCI $a_{dom}$ algorithm was derived from the relationship between remote sensing reflectance band ratio ($R_{rs}(412)/R_{rs}(555)$) and $a_{dom}(\lambda)$). The GOCI Chl-a fluorescence and GOCI red tide algorithms were developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2007) and Ahn and Shanmugam (2006), respectively. If the launch of GOCI in June 2010 is successful, then the developed algorithms will be analyzed in the GOCI CAL/VAL processes, and improved by incorporating more data sets of the ocean optical properties data that will be obtained from waters around the Korean Peninsula.

HyperSAS Data for Polar Ocean Environments Observation and Ocean Color Validation (극지 해양환경 관측 및 고위도 해색 검보정을 위한 초분광 HyperSAS 자료구축)

  • In Arctic and Antarctic ocean, remote sensing is the most effective observation for environmental changes due to the inaccessibility of the regions. Even though satellite, UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehical) are well known remote sensing platforms, and research vessel also used for automatic measurement on the regions, varied environment of Polar regions require time series and wide coverage of data. Especially, in high latitude, apply an optical satellite remote sensing is not easy due to low sun altitude. In this paper, we introduce an operation of hyper-spectrometer (HyperSAS/Satlantic inc.) which is mounted on Ice Breaker Research Vessel ARAON of Korea Polar Research Institute since 2010, to acquire an above water reflectance atomatically through every research cruise on Arctic and Antarctic ocean and transit both regions. In addition to, auxiliary data for the remotely acquired data, in situ water sampling were also obtained. The above water reflectance and in situ water sampling data are continuously acquired since 2010 will contribute to improve an Ocean Color algorithm in the high latitude and help to understand ocean reflectances over from high latitude through low latitude. Preliminary result from above water reflectance showed characteristics of Arctic ocean and Antarctic Ocean and used to develop algorithms for estimating various ocean factors such as chlorophyll and suspended sediment.

Observation on the Seabed around Simheungteak Seamount near Dokdo and using Mini-ROV (소형 ROV를 활용한 독도 및 심흥택해산 해저면 탐사)

  • ROV surveys were conducted using 500 meter mini class ROV with HD video camera, 2 LED lights, a simple manipulator and 8 thrusters near the Dokdo and Simheungtaek seamount. Total six dives have been conducted using the ROV "V8 SII" from Sweden and ROV's support ship, "KOSAL V" at 4 stations between 45 and 370 meters with diving time ranged from 30 to 120 minutes. Dense communities of sea anemone (Actinostolidae sp.) and ophiuroids (Ophiuridae sp.) on the surface of rocky bottom and snow crab on the soft bottom with muddy-sand were observed at northwestern part of Simheungtaek seamount. We obtained the following results 1) habitats information for snow crab, one of the major fisheries resources, and deep-sea fauna, 2) observation on the specific topography and sediment conditions, 3) observation of the seabed surface covered with the discarded fishing gears. This study represents the first report of in situ visual observation of deep-sea organisms and their habitats near the Dokdo slopes and flat top of the Simheungtaek seamount in the East Sea. These results indicated that immediate oceanographic survey using the mini class ROV is available in the East Sea.

A Study on the Erosion and Retreat of Sea-Cliff through the Multi-temporal Aerial Photograph Data and Field Survey: The Case Study of Taean Peninsula, Korea (다중시기 항공사진과 현장조사를 통한 해안침식 변화 연구: 태안반도를 사례로)

  • In this study, the volume of shoreline retreat at sea-cliffs in the Taean peninsula(West Coast of Korea) was estimated and their erosion and seasonal landforms characteristics changes were investigated through multi-temporal aerial photographs and field survey. Based on the analysis of aerial photographs through ortho-correction, the results show that the length of shoreline and erosion area increase as erosion at sea-cliffs occurs in Pado-li and Dundu-li. To obtain the seasonal quantitative landforms changes and retreat of sea-cliffs, we marked top, middle, and bottom datum-points, from which the distance to the nearest bedrock was repeatedly measured. In these regions, the retreat of sea-cliffs gradually increases in spring to summer, but gradually decreases in autumn. In particular, the typhoon that has a great influence on the Korean peninsula in July to September in summer would drastically increase the retreat of sea-cliffs in comparison with other seasons. As the outcrop of sea-cliffs repeats freezing and thawing in winter, the retreat of sea-cliffs increases a little due to active mechanical weathering. To know the erosion and seasonal landforms changes of sea-cliffs, we took pictures of them in every month and then analyze their condition. The retreat of sea-cliffs was repeatedly occurred by the circulation of the erosion of sea-cliff base, landslides, the formation of slope sediment debris and their erosion, in that order.
