  • The erosion(or sediment) reaches very serious level due to the aftermath by the imprudent reclamation on the coast. Continuous studies for long on coastline erosion may be warranted and possible countermeasures proposed because the change of the coastline has been progressed slowly for a long period of time in a wide area. Many experts anticipate that the global sea level's average increase by 19-35 cm due to global warming may certainly have an effect on the coastal erosion throughout the world. Thus, a more rigorous study on the causes of changing coastlines is particularly proposed to find ways to counteract any possible threats against coastal environments. In this study, Ortho aerial photo and hydrographic survey datum were utilized to quantitatively analyze coastal erosion and sediment patterns. This paper also seeks to prove that a parcel under the sea occurred due to relatively significant changes to the coastline. We created Ortho aerial photo using aerial photos taken each decade ('81, '93, '00), overlaid them onto a cadastral registration map, and calculated each amount of erosion and sediment while accounting for the tide level and without considering it. As the result of this study, we could propose that the methods of Ortho aerial photo and the marine observation datum were the effective ways of change detection in erosion, sediment, and artificial reclamation of the coastline for a long time.

  • The study describes growth and survival on different kinds of sediment improvements of early spats of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis. Specimens of the mature hard clam were collected in the intertidal zone of Yeonggwang, Korea, July 2011. After transportation, early spats(shell length $196{\pm}14{\mu}m$) collected in mature hard clam were used. Experiment period were July 7 to August 6 in 2011 (30 days). Sediment improvements used iodine(10 ppm), hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$, 5 ppm), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO, 100 ppm), chlorine dioxide($ClO_2$, 100 ppm) and potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$, 5 ppm). After cultured during 30 days, shell length growth of hard clam were observed $1.04{\pm}0.26mm$ in sodium hypochlorite 100 ppm, $1.03{\pm}0.25mm$ in chlorine dioxide 100 ppm and $1.01{\pm}0.28mm$ in iodine 10 ppm. Survival rate were 31.4% in chlorine dioxide 100 ppm, 12.1% in sodium hypochlorite 100 ppm, 11.6% in iodine 10 ppm, 1.5% in hydrogen peroxide 5 ppm and 0% in potassium permanganate 5 ppm.

  • In order to estimate the sedimentation rates of continental shelf and slope of Ulleung Basin in the Southwestern East Sea, $^{210}Pb,\;^{226}Ra\;and\;^{137}Cs$ were simultaneously measured by a well-type high purity germanium(HPGe) gamma detector. $^{137}Cs$ was used to determine whether the sediment were affected by bioturbation or not, and to judge the accuracy of estimated sedimentation rates. The estimated sedimentation rates decreased exponentially from slope to basin - 0.6 cm/yr in the continental shelf, $0.3{\sim}0.4$ cm/yr in the slope, and below 0.2 cm/yr in the margin of Ulleung basin. From our and other research results, we suggest followings about sediment transport of the study area. The sediment particles were transported by coastal current from south to north through the Korea Straight. And much of them were accumulated in the shelf area. And then, the rest of sediment particles were deposited in the lower slope and the southwest margin of the basin. Also the excess $^{210}Pb$ profiles indicate that the depositional processes in the study area may have been very complicate.

  • The properties of sediment collected from seabed surface to 6cm depth on the four positions were analyzed to investigate turbulence of marine sediments by shrimp beam trawl. Types of sediments in the investigation area were (g)mS (slightly gravely muddy sand) and gmS (gravely muddy sand) showing high sand content, and (g)sM (slightly gravely sandy mud), gsM (gravely sandy mud) as well. It is estimated that position is more crucial factor than seasonal difference for the granularity variation of sediment in each investigation area. Finding the positional characteristics of sediment granularity was difficult before removing shells and organic matter. However, the average granularity is getting larger by going out from inland sea to open sea once those were removed. The granularity of marine sediment got narrow after processing in the fishing area for shrimp beam trawl but there was no big difference for granularity size before and after processing in the non-fishing area. This might be attributed to crushed shell particles going up and down again on the surface in the fishing area. To demonstrate the hypothesis mentioned above, the sediments driven by shrimp beam trawl need to be collected and analyzed.

  • Understanding the behavior of pollutants in the marine environment is essential for coping with the marine pollution problems such as eutrophication. In this study, the effects of environmental parameters on phosphorus release from marine sediment to sea water were investigated. The environmental parameters such as pH in the range of 7 to 9, temperature from 10 to 20C and dissolved oxygen levels (DO) renging 0.7 to 7.0mg/L were examined. Phosphorus release data were taken from batch tests excluding biotic effects, and analyzed using a first-order kinetic model. The effects of environmental parameters were quantified using a statistical methodology. High pH, high temperature, and low DO increased phosphorus release from the sediment to sea water. pH from 7 to 9, temperature from 10 to $20^{\circ}C$, or DO from 7.0 to 0.7 mg/L magnified the equilibrium phosphorus concentration up to 2~3 times.

  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of biostimulating agent in contaminated coastal sediment. The study was conducted via column tests in coastal sea wherein two separate columns were employed for two different polymers used and another column for a blank. The biostimulating agent was made by mixing sea sediment with biostimulants viz acetate, nitrate, sulfate. The biostimulating agent was then rolled into balls, dried and coated with either Cellulose Acetate (CA) or Polysulfone (PS) to control the release of the biostimulants. The pH was around 7.6~8 for 4 months while COD, TP and TN were significantly lower in the column containing biostimulating agents. Heavy metal(Fe, Zn, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu) was converted to stable forms and PS coated biostimulating agent had a high efficiency of heavy metals distribution.

  • To trace the provenance of fine-grained sediments in response to the growth and retreat of glaciers (i.e., Ross Ice Sheet) that affects the depositional process, various kinds of analyses including magnetic susceptibility, granulometry, and clay mineral composition with AMS 14C age dating were carried out using a gravity core KI-13-GC2 obtained from the Central Basin of the Ross Sea continental margin. The sediments mostly consist of silty mud to sand with ice-rafted debris, the sediment colors alternate repeatedly between light brown and gray, and the sedimentary structures are almost bioturbated with some faint laminations. Among the fine-grained clay mineral compositions, illite is highest (59.1-76.2%), followed by chlorite (12.4-21.4%), kaolinite (4.1-11.6%), and smectite (1.2-22.6%). Illite and chlorite originated from the Transantarctic mountains (metamorphic rocks and granitic rocks) situated to the south of the Ross Sea. Kaolinite might be supplied from the sedimentary rocks of Antarctic continent underneath the ice sheet. The provenance of smectite was considered as McMurdo volcanic group around the Victoria Land in the western part of the Ross Sea. Chlorite content was higher and smectite content was lower during the glacial periods, although illite and kaolinite contents are almost consistent between the glacial and interglacial periods. The glacial increase of chlorite content may be due to more supply of the reworked continental shelf sediments deposited during the interglacial periods to the Central Basin. On the contrary, the glacial decrease of smectite content may be attributed to less transport from the McMurdo volcanic group to the Central Basin due to the advanced ice sheet. Although the source areas of the clay minerals in the Central Basin have not changed significantly between the interglacial and glacial periods, the transport pathways and delivery mechanism of the clay minerals were different between the glacial and interglacial periods in response to the growth and retreat of Ross Ice Sheet in the Ross Sea.

  • The East Sea is almost entirely composed of sandy facies, and the facies type is the major factor influencing benthic polychaete communities. There have been few studies of the effects of environmental factors on benthic polychaetes in thermal discharge areas consisting of different sediment types. This study identified the spatial distribution patterns based on the species composition and distribution of benthic polychaete communities, and the environmental factors influencing benthic polychaetes near power plants were investigated. The polychaete communities in the Uljin, Hupo, and Gori coastal areas near the power plants in the East Sea were seasonally investigated from August 2006 to February 2013. As a result, 283 species were collected. The dominant species were Spiophanes bombyx, Magelona japonica, Lumbrineris longifolia, and Sternaspis scutata. Spiophanes bombyx was the dominant species at Uljin and Hupo, but M. japonica was the dominant species at Gori. Two dominant species from the coastal waters of the East Sea, Lumbrineris longifolia and M. japonica, were rare in the power plant water intake or drainage areas. Cluster analysis was performed to divide the study area into groups by the total organic carbon content, sediment grain size and facies patterns. This study suggests that the community structures of polychaetes are more affected by the total organic carbon, grain size of sediment and facies than by disturbance from thermal discharge, which only affected the polychaete community near power plant drainage areas.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the pollution level of the surface sediment of Sihwa Lake by assessing its geochemical characteristics and investigating the spatial distribution of trace metals and organic matter. In the surface sediment of Sihwa lake, the mean grain size was between 2.94 and 6.35 Ø and the main type of sediment was sandy silt. The concentrations of As, Co, Cr, Ni, V and Li among the metal elements in the surface sediment were correlated with the mean crust concentration (p<0.05). Based on the strong correlation between the metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) and organic matter (Ignition Loss), the concentrations of these metal elements seem to be controlled by the organic matter dilution effect. The trace metal pollution level, determined by applying the Republic of Korea Marine environmental standard and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's sediment quality guidelines, showed the pollution level of As to be either close to or in excess of the above-mentioned standards at almost all levels. The enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index of As showed that there was an incremental increase of pollution by elements other than V, Cr, Co, Fe, Al and Mn. Moreover, the nearby industrial area and dike were more polluted than the other areas, so the surface sediments in Sihwa lake should be monitored by taking into consideration the geological variations.

  • Surface sediment samples collected from the eastern half of the Yellow Sea proper in 1998 were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ubiquitous pollutants. Total PAHs concentrations varied from 1.0 to $320.5ng\;g^{-1}$ dw. Relatively high concentrations of PAHs were found in the muddy central part of the Yellow Sea. Sedimentary total PAHs concentrations in the Yellow Sea proper were similar to those of Californian offshores and the central Mediterranean Sea, albeit an order of magnitude lower than the Yellow Sea nearshore areas. Phenanthene/Anthracene concentration ratio of PAHs in bottom sediments suggested that pyrolytic PAHs might be dominant over petrogenic ones in the eastern Yellow Sea. Downcore depth distributions of PAHs from the relatively undisturbed core samples of the central Yellow Sea showed decreasing PAHs concentrations with core depths and suggested that the Yellow Sea has been increasingly exposed to PAH for decades. Annual total PAH flux to these sediments was estimated to be $166{\mu}gm^{-2}yr^{-1}$ in the central part of the Yellow Sea for the recent decade.
