Water and salt budgets in the Yellow Sea and Bohai are analyzed based on the historical data and CTD data collected recently using box models. The amounts of volume transport and of water exchange across the boundary between the Yellow and East China Seas are estimated to be 2,330-2,840 $\textrm{km}^3$/yr and 109-133 $\textrm{km}^3$/yr, respectively, from the one-layer box model. Corresponding water residence time is 5-6 years. In the Bohai, water residence time is twice as long as that in the Yellow Sea, suggesting that the Yellow Sea and Bohai cannot be considered as a single system in the view of water and salt budgets. The results indicate that water and salt budgets in the Yellow Sea depend almost only on the water exchange between the Yellow and East China Seas. The computation with the coupled two-layer model shows that water residence time is slightly decreased to 4-5 years for the Yellow Sea. In order to reduce uncertainties for the budgeting results the amount of the discharge from the Changjiang that enters into the Yellow Sea, the vertical advection and vertical mixing fluxes across the layer interface have to be quantified. The decreasing trend of the annual Yellow River outflow is likely to result that water residence time is much longer than the current state, especially for the Bohai. The completion of the Three Gorges dam on the Changjiang may be change the water and salt budgets in the Yellow Sea. It is expected that cutting back the discharge from the Changjiang by 10% through the dam would increase water residence time by about 10%.

In India, the current operation of condenser cooling system & effluent disposal system in existing power plants aims to reduce drawal of seawater and to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge to meet the demands of statutory requirements, water scarcity and ecological system. Particularly in the Steam-Electric power plants, condenser cooling system adopts Once through cooling (OTC) system which requires more drawal of seawater and effluent disposal system adopts sea outfall system which discharges hot water into sea. This paper presents an overview of closed-loop technology for condenser cooling system and to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge plant in Steam-Electric power plants making it lesser drawal of seawater and complete elimination of hot water discharges into sea. The closed-loop technology for condenser cooling system reduces the drawal of seawater by 92% and Zero Liquid Discharge plant eliminates the hot water discharges into sea by 100%. Further, the proposed modification generates revenue out of selling potable water and ZLD free flowing solids at INR 81,97,20,000 per annum (considering INR 60/Cu.m, 330 days/year and 90% availability) and INR 23,760 per annum (considering INR 100/Ton, 330 days/year and 90% availability) respectively. This proposed modification costs INR 870,00,00,000 with payback period of less than 11 years. The conventional technology can be replaced with this proposed technique in the existing and upcoming power plants.
A study was initiated to investigate whether the groundwaters being discharged into the sea could be used as a possible water resources. This paper presents a preliminary information about the groundwaters being discharged along the shoreline of East Sea. Major discharge sites were selected primarily on the basis of the informaion on surface temperatures of the sea. Hydrogeologic and geographic conditions were also considered in selecting the major discharge sites. The development possibility of the discharging groundwater were estimated roughly, considering populations, industries and social development compatibilities of the selected areas. Groundwater dams and linked usage with surface water were suggested as possible development methods for the groundwaters.. Based on this study, we selected about 60 sites as the major discharge areas and tentatively recommended 6 sites as optimal sites for development of groundwaters being discharged into the sea. However, detailed in-situ hydrogeologic surveys are required prior to the final decision.

This study, as a basic study for establishing a influence forecasting/estimating model when drain the deep sea water to the ocean after using it, carried out studies as follows; 1) estimating the amount of river discharge and pollutant loads inflowing into the developing region of deep sea water in East Sea, Korea 2) a field observation of tidal current, vertical distribution of water temperature and salinity, and 3-D numerical experiment of tidal current to analysis physical oceanographic status. The amount of river discharge flowing into the study area was estimated about $462.6{times}10^{3}m^{3}/day$ of daily mean in 2002 year. annual mean pollutant load of COD, TN and TP were estimated 7.02 ton-COD/day, 4.06 ton-TN/day and 0.39 ton/day, respectively. Field observation of tidal current results usually show about $20{\sim}40cm/sec$ of current velocity at the surface layer, it indicated a tendency that the current velocity decreases under 20cm/sec as the water depth increases. We could find a stratification within approximately the depth of 30m in field observation area, and the depth increases. We could find a stratification within approximately the depth of 30m in field observation area, and the differences of water temperature and salinity between the surface layer and bottom layer were about $18^{\circ}C$ and 0.8 psu, respectively. On the other hand, we found that there was a definite as the water mass of deep sea water about 34 psu of salinity.
As a basic study for establishing the input conditions of a forecasting/estimating model, used for deep-sea water drainage to the ocean, this study was carried out as follows: 1) estimating the amount of river discharge and pollutant loads into the developing region of deep sea water in the East Sea, Korea, 2) a field observation of tidal current, vertical water temperature, and salinity distribution, 3) 3-D numerical experiment of tidal current to analyze the physical oceanographic status. The amount of river discharge flowing into this study area was estimated at about $462.7{\times}103 m\^3/day$ of daily mean in 2002. Annual mean pollutant load of COD, TN, and TP were estimated at 7.02 ton-COD/day, 4.06 ton-TN/day, and 0.39 ton/day, respectively. Field observation of tidal current normally shows 20-40cm/sec of current velocity at the surface layer, and it decreases under 20cm/sec as the water depth increases. We also found a stratification condition at around 30m water depth in the observation area. The differences in water temperature and salinity, between the surface layer and the bottom layer, were about 18 C and 0.8 psu, respectively. On the other hand, we found a definite trend of 34 psu salinity water mass in the deep sea region.

Due to the development of Yongsan river estuary weir and Yongam-Kumho sea dike, Mokop coastal area is changed. Especially, Discharged water through Yongsan river estuary weir and Yongam-Kumho sea dike, may cause the environmental influences such as the changes of currents pattern and sedimentation in the vicinity of semi-closed Mokpo harbor. This study deals with the collection and analysis of discharge through estuary weir and sea dike, based on that, we analyzed a characteristics of a sea area from simulation. As the results of this study, it is known that discharge causes the changes of a tidal currents pattern and calculated depth variations showed close relation with tidal circulation.
Groundwater which infiltrated in recharge areas discharges in the forms of evapotranspiration, baseflow to streams, groundwater abstraction and eventually flows into the sea. This study characterized radon-222 concentration and electrical conductivity (EC) in coastal groundwater discharge, well groundwater, Ilkwang Stream water, and seawater in the coastal area of Busan Metropolitan City and subsequently estimated groundwater discharge rate to the sea. The median value of Rn-222 concentration is highest in well groundwater (18.36 Bq/L), and then decreases in the order of coastal groundwater discharge (15.92 Bq/L), Ilkwang Stream water (1.408 Bq/L), and seawater (0.030 Bq/L). The relationship between Rn-222 concentration and EC values is relatively strong in well groundwater and then in seawater. However, the relationship is not visible between coastal groundwater discharge and Ilkwang Stream water. The groundwater discharge rate to the sea is estimated as $3,130m^3$/day by using radon mass budget model and $16,788m^3$/day by using Darcy's law.
A demand of marine outfall system has been much increased for the effective disposal of the wastewater due to population and industrial development at the coastal areas. The outfall system discharges primary or secondary treated effluent into the coastline, or at the deep water, or between these two. The discharge is carried out by constructing a pipeline on the sea bed with a diffuser or with a tunnel, risers and appropriate. The effluent, which has a density similar to that of fresh water, rises to the sea surface forming plume or jet, together with entraining the surrounding salt water and becomes very dilute. Thus there have been growing interests about plume behaviour around the outfall system. Plume or jet discharged from single-port or multi-port diffuser might cause certain impacts on coastal environment. Near field mixing characteristics of discharged water field using CORMIX model have been studied for effective outfall design various conditions on ambient current, depth, flow rate, effluent concentration, diffuser specification, port specification etc.. This kind of analysis is necessary to deal with water quality problems caused by the ocean discharge. The analyzed result was applied to the Pusan Jungang effluent outfall system plan.

Sea dyke construction is simply defined as a cutting procedure of sea water flow. Sea dyke construction is more difficult than in-land construction because it is placed on deep seabed and exposed sea wave attack. Especially, the final closure of sea dyke is most dangerous due to the fast velocity of tidal flow. The final closure is consisted with vast rubble and heavy stone gabion, therefore the discharge velocity at land side of final close section is irregularly and sometime occur the fast discharge velocity. In this paper, the seepage model test performed to evaluate seepage behavior of final closure and continuous sea dyke section such as discharge velocity, hydraulic gradient, and phreatic line with installation of bottom protection filter mat. Based on the seepage model test results, the maximum discharge velocity of final closure section is 1.7m/sec and the discharge velocity is decreased maximum 23.7% with installation of bottom protection filter mat.
