  • We observed five species and 163 individuals of birds in the Demonstration Offshore Wind Farm in the southern part of the West Sea in Korea, and 33 species and 4,023 individuals from Gusipo to Dongho Beach. The most dominant bird in both areas was the black-tailed gull, Larus crassirostris. The flight height of birds for collision risk (wind turbine and bird) was divided into two groups. First, the safe height was from sea level to 20 m (< 20 m), with no effect from the action of revolving blades. Second, the danger height was more than 20 m from sea level (> 20 m), with a collision risk from the action of revolving blades. Birds flying a safe height (< 20 m) were 83.9% (271 individuals) and danger height (> 20 m) were 16.1% (52 individuals). Also, 11.7% of birds (35 individuals) used the inside of the Demonstration Offshore Wind Farm as a habitat for foraging and resting, and 88.3% birds used the outside. We suggest that the risk of collision with the wind farm was low due to the relatively low flight height of birds and distance between wind turbines (> 800 m).

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the economic validity of artificial reefs facilities and seeds release programs in Jeju Trial Sea Farm Project for raising fishing people's revenue. The results of this study show the artificial reefs facilities and seeds release programs have net present value of 15,962.63 million won, internal rate of retrurn 13.86%, and benefit-cost of 1.912 under a 5.5% social discount rate. This suggests that in Jeju trial sea farm project, artificial reefs facilities and seeds release programs increase fisherperson's revenue.

  • Recently, developing the offshore wind farm in Korean peninsula is widely understood as essential to achieve the national target for the renewable energy. As part of national plan, KEPRI (Korea electric power research institute) is performing the front running project for the offshore wind farm development that is dedicated to investigate the possible resources based on the economy considering current technological status. It also includes the selection of the first sea area among candidates and optimal design of the offshore wind farm, etc. In this paper the interim results of the project are summarized that the possible capacity for the offshore wind farm can be estimated conservatively around 18 GW regarding the wind power class, sea depth and social constraint. The five western sea areas near Taean, Gunsan, Gochang, Yeonggwang, Sinan were chosen for the candidating sites. Detailed analysis for these sites will be conducted to finalize the first-going offshore wind farm in Korea.

  • Water pollution of coast has a significant impact on the fish farm and fisheries. For solving the water pollution problems the fish farms are moving to the open sea. The fish farms in open sea have to operate by the automatic feeding system and remote monitoring system for safety and management. This paper describes an automatic feeding system for fish farms in open sea. Water temperature and fish weight will change depending on the amount of feed. And the fish farm temperature is changed extremely in open sea than on land side. This paper described that the feed amount is calculated automatically according to temperature, fish weight, and the automatic feed system. And the performance of automatic feed system is verified with test model for operation test.

  • In this research, the concept of a salt farm parallel solar power system, which produce salt and electricity at the same site, is proposed for the first time in the world. The concept is that large waterproof plates made by interconnected solar modules are installed at the bottom of the salt farm. The pilot system was successfully installed at a sea shore, and verified its feasibility as a solar power plant. For deeper understanding, simulations for power prediction of the system were carried out and compared with the field test results. The power generation of the salt farm parallel system is comparable to conventional solar power plants. The cooling effect by sea water contributes more to the increase in the crystalline silicon photovoltaic module performance than the absorption loss due to sea water by maintaining certain height above the module.

  • Two species of hippolytid shrimps, Eualus kuratai Miyake and Hayashi, 1967 and Heptacarpus igarashii Hayashi and Chiba, 1989, were collected at a sea cucumber farm from the East Sea. These species are described and illustrated for the first time in Korea. Eualus kuratai is closely related to E. middendorffi; however, it lacks a dorsomedian spine on the fourth and fifth abdominal somites. Heptacarpus igarashii can be easily distinguished from other Korean Heptacarpus species due to its short rostrum that lacks ventral teeth on margin. This report extends the previously known ranges from Japan and Korea. In Korea, both genera, Eualus and Heptacarpus, have seven species according to the present report, respectively; moreover, hippolytid shrimps now consist of 31 species of nine genera.

  • An analysis of wind environments using computational fluid dynamics and an evaluation of wind resources using measurement data obtained from meteorological observation sites at Homi-Cape, Pohang have been carrid out for siting a wind farm. It was shown that a numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics would provide reliable wind resource map in complex terrain with land-sea breeze condition. As a result of this investigation, Homi-Cape wind farm with 11.25 ㎿ capacity has been designed for maximum power generation and 25.7 GWh electricity production is predicted.

  • The sea is origin of all lift, and 90% of the all living organisms are in the sea. The biosynthesis is very different. Many organisms are kept on a lower or developed to another evolutionary level than on shore. Our society is increasing demand and need for marine food and this food has to product at onshore or offshore fish farming sites. Ocean fish farms have a special operation properties such as a good quality water, net cage, sheltered locations and feeding system. The farming site is controlled and monitored for fish welfare as ammonia($NH_3$), temperature, the speed of a running fluid. Specially, the fish farm is seriously influenced by ammonia. In this paper, $NH_3$ monitoring system for ocean fish farm is researched for the suitable fish farming sites, and test equipment is designed for achieving practical data. The equipment wit monitoring algorithm is expected to the useful system for ocean fish farm.

  • The depleting fishes resource and water pollution in coast has a decisive effect on the fish farm and fisheries. For solving these problems the fish farms are moving to the offshore. The fish farms in offshore have to design the strong mechanism as compared with cost's fish farm, and operate by the remote feeding system and monitoring system for safety and management.. This paper describes a remote feeding system for fish farms in offshore. The amount of feed is depending on temperature and fish weight. The fish farm temperature is changed extremely in offshore than on land side. This paper described that the feed amount is calculated automatically according to temperature and fish weight, and the remote feed system. The performance of remote feed system is tested with model.
