  • This research connected network equipment, including CCTV, PAGA, IP-PBX, and Legacy, in order to enable the operation and configuration of internal IP-based network equipment in maritime plants and vessels, both in the field and from remote places, and to allow for the support of remotely controlling such equipment. It also realized an operating program for the integrated network equipment management system to enable the monitoring and control of equipment status, operation condition, and notifications from distant places. By applying the operating program to satellite stations and vessels sailing on the sea, a performance test was conducted to evaluate data loss and transmission/reception delay in the communication section between the land and vessels. As a result, this research verified the normal operation of CCTV control and of real-time monitoring and control of the network equipment, including PAGA, IP-PBX, and Legacy under the FBB and MVSAT environments. It was observed that the transmission of CCTV video images with a large volume of data as well as the transmission and reception of voice data were found to be slightly delayed, indicating the need to develop technology to compress and convert data for real-time transmission and reception.

  • Interest in the development of renewable energy sources has been increasing over the past 10 years and the west coast of Korea is one of the most favorable regions for tidal power. Barrage type tidal power is representative of the experience of installation and operation of such power sources for long periods. However, future projects for barrage type energy sources are either delayed or closed due to their environmental impact. For this reason, we applied a new tidal power technology with minimized environmental impact to a candidate area in the west coast and then analyzed its feasibility. The new tidal power technology is called Dynamic Tidal Power (DTP). Because its verification is impossible both in the laboratory and field, a numerical model is used for the evaluation of DTP. This new technology produces tidal power by means of the phase difference caused by diffraction on both sides of a dike built tens of km away from the coast. Because DTP is theoretically able to almost double the tidal range, it is expected to be applicable to even a small tidal area. Unlike the barrage type, it has the advantage of reducing the environmental impact by not enclosing the sea water. The west coast of Korea is close to the metropolitan area and has a high tidal range and, thus, it is thought to be a suitable candidate for tidal power.

  • In the dissertation, Bibos are discussed as landscape features in the geographical context of Youngnam Region. The bibo tradition in Youngnam Region began with the incorporation of temple structures in Shilla and Kaya kingdoms, and spread throughout the country during the period of Unified Shilla. In Korea Dynasty, the diffusion of temple Bibo gained momentum, because Buddhism was worshipped as national religion. Then came a sea change in the Bibo repertoire with the replacement of Buddhism by Confucianism as an ideological prop for Chason Korea. The retreat of Buddhism led to the popularization of feng-shui motifs in Bibo strategy. The centers of the diffusion of the logic of bibo were major towns such as Kyongju, Ahndong, Sangju, and Chinju. The diffusion process continued top-down to mid-sized towns, and to the bottom of small villages. What sustained the hierarchical diffusion of Bibo attributes was myriad of transportation lines. The main artery of the diffusion in Korea Dynasty was that connecting Kaegyong to Kyongju. That same function was performed by the royal road running from Seoul through Sangju, Milyang, and to Tongrae. In the age of modernization, the feng-shui and Bibo landscapes have lost their original aura. They have suffered from the ruthless attacks of the Enlightenment logic of science. However, the elan vital of feng-shui and Bibo are still visible and strongly felt in the countryside. From field experiences, one can notice that the Bibo landscapes are tightly integrated into the rural way of life. The durability of the traditional geomancy shows us the beauty of the harmonious interplay between Youngnam people and the nature.

  • Salt injury in rice is caused mainly by the salinity in soil and in the irrigated water, and occasionaly by salinity delivered through typhoon from the sea. The salt concentration of rice plants increased with higher salinity in the soil of the rice growing. The climatic conditions, high temperature and solar radiation and dry conditions promote the salt absorption of rice plant in saline soil. The higher salt accumulation in the rice plant generally reduces the root activity and inhibits the absorption of minerals of rice plant, resulting the reduction of photosynthesis. The salt damages of rice plant, however, are different from different growth stage of rice plants as follows: 1. Germination of rice seed was slightly delayed up to 1.0% of salt concentration and remarkably at 1. 5%, but none of rice seeds were germinated at 2.5%. This may be due to the delayed water uptake of rice seeds and the inhibition of enzyme activity, 2. It was enable to establish rice seedlings at seed bed by 0.2% of salt concentration with some reduction of leaf elongation. The increasing of 0.3% salt concentration caused to the seedling death with varietal differences, but most of seedlings were death at 0.4% with no varietal differences. 3. Seedlings grown at the nursery over 0.1% salt, gradually reduced in rooting activity after transplanting according to increasing the salt concentration from 0.1% up to 0.3% of paddy field. However, the seedlings grown in normal seed bed showed no difference in rooting between varieties up to 0.1% but significantly different at 0.3% between varieties, but greatly reduced at 0.5% and died at last in paddy after transplanting. 4. At panicle initiation stage, rice plant delayed in heading by salt damage, at meiotic stage reduced in grains and its filling rate due to inhibition of glume and pollen developing, and salt damage at heading stage and till 3 weeks after heading caused to reduction of fertilization and ripening rate. In viewpoint of agricultural policy the overcoming strategy for salt injury is to secure sufficient water source. Irrigation and drainage systems as well as underground drainage is necessary to desalinize more effectively. This must be the most effective and positive way except cost. By cultural practice, growing the salt tolerant variety with high population could increase yield. The intermittent irrigation and fresh water flooding especially at transplanting and from panicle initiation to heading stage, the most sensitive to salt injury, is important to reduce the salt content in saline soil. During the off-cropping season, plough and rotavation with flooding followed by drainage, or submersion and drainage with groove could improve the desalinization. Increase of nitrogen fertilizer with more split application, and soil improvement by lime, organic matter and forign soil addition, could increase the rice yield. Shift of trans-planting is one of the way to escape from the salt injury.

  • Soft tunic syndrome (STS) is a protozoal disease caused by Azumiobodo hoyamushi in the edible ascidian Halocynthia roretzi. Previous studies have proven that combined formalin-hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) bath is effective in reducing STS progress and mortality. To secure target animal safety for field applications, toxicity of the treatment needs to be evaluated. Healthy ascidians were bathed for 1 week, 1 h a day at various bathing concentrations. Bathing with 5- and 10-fold optimum concentration caused 100% mortality of ascidians, whereas mortality by 0.5- to 2.0-fold solutions was not different from that of control. Of the oxidative damage parameters, MDA levels did not change after 0.5- and 1.0-fold bathing. However, free radical scavenging ability and reducing power were significantly decreased even with the lower-than-optimal 0.5-fold concentration. Glycogen content tended to increase with 1-fold bathing without statistical significance. All changes induced by the 2-fold bathing were completely or partially restored to control levels 48 h post-bathing. Free amino acid analysis revealed a concentration-dependent decline in aspartic acid and cysteine levels. In contrast, alanine and valine levels increased after the 2-fold bath treatment. These data indicate that the currently established effective disinfectant regimen against the parasitic pathogen is generally safe, and the biochemical changes observed are transient, lasting approximately 48 h at most. Low levels of formalin and $H_2O_2$ were detectable 1 h post-bathing; however, the compounds were completely undetectable after 48 h of bathing. Formalin-$H_2O_2$ bathing is effective against STS; however, reasonable care is required in the treatment to avoid unwanted toxicity. Drug residues do not present a concern for consumer safety.

  • Forest fire has a number of variables and since the effects of wind fields are bigger than any other variables, it is essential to know wind direction and velocity for the forest fire extinguishing techniques and the prediction of fire spread. With regards to the local area that has a high chance of forest fire, the data from meteorological observatory in the area is used for the estimation of wind velocity. It is relatively easy to obtain automatic weather station (AWS) data which are available for the whole nation. There is a chance that the data from the weather station may be different with the actual data at the mountain areas. In this study simply shaped hills (Sae-byeol hill of Jeju Island and port Ma-geum in An-myeon Island in the sea side) were selected as the experimental locations to minimize the distortion of the wind field by the adjacent geographic features. Spot measurements and analysis of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the given geographic features were conducted to examine and compare their consistency. As a conclusion It is possible to predict wind patterns in these simple locations.

  • The Korean Peninsula is located on the east coast of monsoon Asia of the midlatitude, where the Pacific polar front moves. As a result variations of spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation occur. A great variation of precipitation during the summer months created frequent droughts and floods. The purpose of this study is to identify distributional characteristics and to analyze synopic characteristics of summer droughts in Korea. The research methods used are ; (1) to identify droughts based on the anomaly of monthly precipitation during summer of 1994. (2) to analyze correlations between drought and weather systems by using the calender of rain days. (3) to compare a synoptic mechanism of summer droughts with that of typical normal summer. The characteristics of summer droughts of 1994 may be summarized as follows ; 1) While most regions were affected by the droughts some regions displayed specific characteristics. The southern part of the Korean Peninsula was severely affected during the month of June. August droughts severely affected east part of the Sobek Mountains, thus showing that the droughts of June and August are highly localized. 2) In the pressure anomaly of surface field. the positive anomaly appears in June around Korean Peninsula, but in July when all parts of the South Korea were under severe droughts, the anomaly changes and becomes negative. 3) Extracyclones occurred less frequently in the summer of 1994. Those that did occur were located in areas far off the Korean Peninsula having little consequences on the drought patterns. 4) The trough of westerly wave at 500hPa height patterns in June is located far from the eastern sea of Korean Peninsula, but in July and August Korean Peninsula belongs to ridge of westerly wave. 5) In June the positive height anomaly at 500hPa surface appears zonally from Siberia to the western Parts of North Pacific Ocean, and in July and August, the strong positive anomaly appears around Korean Peninsula. As a result the zonal index of westerlies at during each month of summer in Korean sector has a large value, which in turn implies that drought will prevails when zonal flow is strong.

  • In the case of small observation towers located at sea, it is necessary to confirm the change in dynamic characteristics due to the influence of environmental loads. In this study, the dynamic characteristics were analyzed and the numerical analysis model was designed through field dynamic response measurement on the Mangyeong Offshore Observation Tower (Mangyeong Tower) located near the Saemangeum Embankment. As a result of the measurement, the natural frequency was found to increase slowly as the tide level is lowered. In addition, it was confirmed that the same mode has two frequencies, which was judged to be a phenomenon in which the natural frequency was partially increased when the pile and the ground contacted by scouring. For numerical analysis, the upper mass, artificial fixity point, scour depth and fluid influences are reflected in the structural characteristics of the Mangyeong Tower. In addition, the model updating from the estimated natural frequency and pattern search algorithm was performed. From the model updating, it is expected that it can be applied to future studies on stability of Mangyeong Tower.

  • The crayfish-shaped artificial bait for octopus drift line is manufactured, into which is made to insert ordinary bait. The effects of the artificial bait are confirmed through the analysis of octopus' behavior in the laboratory in comparison with the existing bait of pig-fat skin, and the investigation of the octopus catch on the sea, and in addition, the examination of the water quality in relation to the bait to be inserted into the artificial bait is done together. The artificial bait is red in color, 10.5cm in the length of the body, and 29g in weight. The octopus behavior in relation to the bait in the laboratory has shown a good result in which more than 30% of the octopuses rushed to the artificial bait. In the analysis of the octopus sitting time by the bait, the octopus stayed longer with the artificial bait(63.7%) than the pig-fat skin(25.1%). The octopus sitting time at the artificial bait inserted with frozen squid(48.8%, 44.6%) is shown to be longer than that of the pig-fat skin(36.9%) or boiled fish paste(21.2%). In the analysis of sitting frequency to the bait, the case of the artificial bait(total 17 times) was more than that of the pig-fat skin(total 3 times), and the case of the artificial bait with frozen squid attracted the octopuses more frequently than that of the pig-fat skin or the boiled fish paste. In the field experiment, the fishing boat A(Manseon-ho, 1.22tons) caught the total 93 octopuses, while the fishing boat B(Ilho-ho, 0.73tons) caught the total 154 octopuses, all of which weighed less than 9.0kg. In the comparison with the total catch, the case with the artificial bait was a little higher than that of the pig-fat skin($^{**}p\;<\;0.05$). In the analysis of the water quality in relation to the baits, the COD showed the descending order of frozen squid(0.57mg/g), boiled fish paste(0.18mg/g), and pig-fat skin(0.10mg/g), and the case with frozen squid was the highest and the case of the pig-fat skin, lowest. The total phosphorus, like the COD, showed the highest in frozen squid(0.02mg/g), and in case of the total nitrogen, unlike the COD, the pig-fat skin was shown to be the highest(0.006mg/g).
