  • This paper presents the analysis method of the instantaneous screw axis using line geometry in bump and rebound motion of 5-SS multi-link suspensions. Instantaneous screw axis is based on screw motion, and screw motion of zero pitch can be expressed as $Pl{\ddot{u}}cker$ line coordinates of line geometry instead of screw coordinates. In screw coordinates, twist and wrench are described by components of instantaneous screw axis. For instantaneous motion of wheel assembly, the principle of virtual work with twist and wrench is applied to 5-SS multi-link suspension, and it makes 5 linear equations. Therefore, it is possible to find instantaneous screw axis by solving these equations. This analysis by line geometry demands geometric values only, such as the locations of spherical joints in the case of multi-link suspensions.

  • NC machining of large screw which is usually used as a part in an extruder for injection molding is done on 3-axis turning machine, and it is very time-consuming process. Not only in machining but in preparing part program for a NC machine, it requires very long time because the shape of the screw is not easy to model when using an existing general CAD/CAM software even though it is workstation level software. In addition, tool path generation procedure for NC turning for screw shape is also very tedious one because large amount of data for cutter location point must be produced and there is no specific CAM software for the machining. In this paper. development of a CAM system for screw machining which saves the role of CAD software by use of menu driven data input system for various screw shapes is introduced.

  • In this study, screw machining system by use of a rotational tool such as an end-mill or a face cutter with Y axis off-set on a CNC turing center was developed for quick machining. In this system, It was possible to use different tools for different processes, and by off-setting the tool in Y direction by calculated amount it was possible to avoid tool interference problem which could occur within the central area at the end of a tool. In addition, machining a screw with a helix of up to 3 different leads combined and with tapered minor diameter was possible.

  • We report a case of C1-2 instability with a bilateral high-riding transverse foramen that was treated with rod-screw fixation using a technique of translaminar rigid screw fixation of the axis. It is believed that a C1-2 fixation with bilateral C-2 translaminar screws has an important advantage over previously reported techniques of C1-2 fixation by eliminating the risk of injury to the vertebral artery during C2 screw placement.

  • In machining screws which are important members in mono pumps or progressive cavity pumps CNC turning center with 3 axes is usually used. This sort of screw machining requires large amount of CL data points and rotational tools are used in machining. When working out the CL data points consideration of possible tool interference is important in order to avoid undercut. This paper describes the checking methods of tool interference in the screw machining on the CNC turning center. First of all a specific shape of a screw cross-section that could commonly be applied to all screws was chosen and then possible tool interference associated with that shape was identified. Checking method was mathematically developed and verified. This checking method will be utilized in the CAM system developed by the authors for screw machining on the 3-axis CNC turning center.

  • Thermal expansion of ball screw in the semi-closed loop type CNC LATHE introduces positioning errors directly along the travelling the axis. In this paper the thermal displacements of the ball screw were estimated by using macro variable. The estimated displacements of the ball screw were given to the ball screw of the CNC LATHE under the constant driving conditions were measured to examine the effectiveness of the compensation method. The results showed that thermal displacements of the ball screw could be maintained less then 6 .mu.m positioning accaracy while using this compensation.

  • Screw rotors, the key parts of screw compressors, are used in compressing air and refrigerant due to their high productivity, compact size, low noise and maintenance. In general, a screw compressor is composed of a pair of rotors of complex geometric shape. The manufacturing cost of the screw rotors is high because the complicated helical shapes of the screw rotors are manufactured usually by the dedicated machine tools. In this study, rotor profile is divided into three parts for the efficient machining. The formed tools are designed and shared for the respective split region. By cutting the screw rotor using the formed tools, this method is more efficient than the end mill in machining rotor. Experimental results show that 4-axis machining using formed tools needs less time and has the accuracy.

  • Objective : To investigate the feasibility of C1 lateral mass screw and C2 pedicle screw with polyaxial screw and rod system supplemented with miniplate for interlaminar fusion to treat various atlantoaxial instabilities. Methods : After posterior atlantoaxial fixation with lateral mass screw in the atlas and pedicle screw in the axis, we used 2 miniplates to fixate interlaminar iliac bone graft instead of sublaminar wiring. We performed this procedure in thirteen patients who had atlantoaxial instabilities and retrospectively evaluated the bone fusion rate and complications. Results : By using this method, we have achieved excellent bone fusion comparing with the result of other methods without any complications related to this procedure. Conclusion : C1 lateral mass screw and C2 pedicle screw with polyaxial screw and rod system supplemented with miniplate for interlaminar fusion may be an efficient alternative method to treat various atlantoaxial instabilities.

  • The synchondrosis between the dens and the body of axis normally fuses between 5 and 7 years of age. Until this age, synchondrosis fractures can occur in children. Most synchondrosis fractures are conventionally treated by external immobilization alone. We report a 10-year-old child with odontoid synchondrosis fracture who was treated by C1 lateral mass and C2 pars screw rod fixation with a successful outcome and discuss the possible reasons for occurrence of odontoid synchondrosis fracture in this older child as well as the indications for surgery in this condition.

  • Objective : C2 laminar screw fixation is considered as an excellent alternative to Magerl's transfacetal approach or Harms construct for the atlantoaxial stabilization. However, to our knowledge, there is no report on the feasibility of the new approach to Korean population. We investigated morphometric parameters of the dorsal arch of the C2 to provide the quantitative data for the feasibility of laminar screw fixation. Methods : One-hundred-and-two patients' cervical computed tomography had been reconstructed and investigated on the anatomical parameters related with C2 laminar screw placement. Sixty patients were male and forty-two patients were female. Measurements included the laminar thickness and slope, spino-laminar angle, and maximal screw length. Results : Ages ranged from 20 to 81 and the mean age was 48.4. Mean laminar thickness was 5.7 mm (${\pm}1.0$) (5.8 mm in male and 5.4 mm in female). Fifty-one patients (50%) had a laminar thickness smaller than 5.5 mm at least unilaterally, therefore the patients were considered as inappropriate candidates for the laminar screw fixation in the smaller side of the laminae. Mean value of maximal length of screw was 33.3 mm (34.3 mm in male and 31.9 mm in female). Mean spino-laminar angle was $43.2^{\circ}$ and mean slope angle was $32.9^{\circ}$. Conclusion : Half of patients had inappropriate laminar profiles to accommodate a 3.5 mm screw in at least one side of the axis. The three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction is mandatory for the preoperative assessment for the feasibility of the C2 lamina.
