  • Objective : This study was designed to find out the effect of scolopendrid aquacupuncture classified by the type of HIVD(Herniation of Inter-Vertebral Disc) in lumbar spine. Methods : The 50 patients who had a diagnosis of HIVD by lumbar-CT or lumbar-MRI and admitted to Gwangju oriental medical hospital in wonkwang university from June 2003 to March 2004 were observed. The symptom of inpatients is low back pain with or without sciatica. We treated 50 patients by scolopendrid aquacupuncture besides the general consevative treatment of oriental medicine. Results and Conclusion : The scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment led to improvement in the pain and symptom of HIVD as determined by all efficacy measures. After scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment, there was improvement in VAS, oswestry disability index, ROM and SLRT. The improvement index of scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment classified by the type of HIVD showed that the effects of scolopendrid aquacupuncture had correlation with the type of HIVD. The more the herniation of intervertebral disc decreased, the more the effect of scolopendrid aquacupuncture increased. This results suggest that scolopendrid aquacupuncture is good method for treatment of HIVD but we have to consider the clinical correlation with the degree of herniation.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this research was to study the effect of Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture on frozen shoulder patients. Methods : All of the 46 frozen shoulder patients who visited the department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion in Wonkwang Sanbon Medical Center from 1st March 2007 to 30th August 2008 had taken either the Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture therapy or acupuncture therapy 10 times. There are 23 patients in each group. We evaluated the improvement of their shoulder pain and disability using the Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Shoulder Pain And Diability Index(SPADI), Range of Motion(ROM), and the Apley Scratch test at their first and last visit. Then we analyzed and compared the improvement shown by the two groups. Results : 1. Measures on all tests for the acupuncture group showed statistically significant improvement. 2. Measures on all tests for Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture showed statistically significant improvement. 3. The Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture group's VAS and ROM(external, internal rotation) showed statistically significant difference compared with those of the acupuncture group. SPADI, ROM(flexion, extension, abduction, adduction) and Apley scratch test had no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions : The above results show that Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture therapy can be used as an effective treatment for reducing frozen shoulder pain.

  • Objective : Neuropathic pain can be caused by a partial peripheral nerve injury. This kind of pain is usually accompanied by spontaneous burning pain, allodynia and hyperalgesia. It is not clear that scolopendrid aqua-acupuncture can control neuropathic pain effectively. The purpose of this study is to examine if scolopendrid aqua-acupuncture may be effective to the neuropathic pain (mechanical allodynia, cold allodynia) in a rat model of neuropathic pain. Methods : To produce the model of neuropathic pain, under isoflurane 2.5% anesthesia, tibial nerve and sural nerve was resected. After the neuropathic surgery, the author examined if the animals exhibited the behavioral signs of allodynia. The allodynia was assessed by stimulating the medial malleolus with von Frey filament and acetone. Three weeks after the neuropathic surgery, scolopendrid aqua-acupuncture was injected at Hwando(GB30) one time a day for one week. After that the author examined the withdrawl response of neuropathic rats' legs by von Frey filament and acetone stimulation. And also the author examined c-fos in the midbrain central gray of neuropathic rats and the change of WBC count in the blood of neuropathic rats. Results & Conclusion : 1. The scolopendrid aqua-acupuncture injected at Hwando(GB30) decreased the withdrawl response of mechanical allodynia in SHA-1, SHA-2 and SAH-3 group as compared with control group. 2. The scolopendrid aqua-acupuncture injected at Hwando(GB30) decreased the withdrawl response of chemical allodynia(cold allodynia) in SHA-1, SHA-2 and SAH-3 group as compared with control group. 3. The scolopendrid aqua-acupuncture injected at Hwando(GB30) showed the significant difference between sham group and control group(p=0.01), sham and SHA-3 group(p=0.026), control group and SHA-1 group(p=0.01), control group and SHA-2 group(p=0.024) in the c-fos expression. 4. The scolopendrid aqua-acupuncture injected at Hwando(GB30) showed the significant difference between sham group and SHA-3 group(p=0.010), control group and SHA-3 group(p=0.006) in the WBC count.

  • Reactive Oxygen Species(ROS) are continuously produced at a high rate as a by-product of aerobic metabolism. Since tissue damage by free radical increases with age, the reactive oxygen species(ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$), nitric oxide(NO). Several lines of evidence provided that ROS appears to cause to develop aging-related various diseases such as cancer, arthritis, cardiovascular disease. Our reserch objective was to examine the in vitro biological activity of Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture, including the total poly-phenol content, DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, Superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity, Nitrite scavenging ability. The total poly-phenol contents of Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture was 35.859mg/L. Elctron donation ability on DPPH was 36.82%. The 2,2'-azinobis-3-ehtlbezothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical decolorization (ABTS) was 84.7%. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities of Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture was 44.33%. The nitrite scavenging effects were pH dependent, and were highest at pH 1.5(45.2%) and lowest at pH 6.0(11.3%). We conclude that Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture may be useful as potential sources of antioxidant.
