The purpose of this study was to develop a scientific inquiry model that makes scientific inquiry accessible to science teachers as well as students. To develop a scientific inquiry model, we investigated the research process demonstrated by ten scientists who were working at academic research institutions or industrial research institutions. We collected data through scientists' journal articles, lab meetings and seminars, and observation of their inquiry process. After we analyzed the scientists' inquiry strategies and processes of inquiry, we finally developed the Scientist's Methodology of Investigation Process model named SMIP. The SMIP model consists of four domains, 15 stages, and link questions, such as "if, why", and "how". The SMIP model stressed that inquiry process is a selective process rather than a linear or a circular process. Overall, these findings can have implication science educators in their attempt to design instruction to improve the scientific inquiry process.
The mechanism of knowledge production in the basic science has been changed throughout the development process in Korea. During the 1970s, the focus resides in the support of individual scientists while it concentrated on the support of research organization, centered on center of excellence from the 1980s. The change in the sup-porting mechanism to basic science result in the transformation of knowledge production system in the university and impact on the behavior of individual scientists. This paper focuses on the co-evolution process between newly adopted supporting program for basic science and the knowledge production system via the case study of representative program of center of excellence supporting program in Korea.

This study analyzed scientists information behaviors when they engage in solving specific research problems in various situations throughout the entire scientific R&D lifecycle process. In-depth interviews with a total of 24 scientists were conducted in their research laboratories, the scientists' everyday workplace and the contexts of scientific research. The theoretical and methodological frameworks employed for this study were Dervin's Sense-making, Savolainen's Everyday Life Information Seeking, and Engestrom's Activity Theory. The findings of this study informed context-specific research and information behaviors of the scientists in the 14 sub stages of the five-stage of R&D lifecycle. Specifically, the study revealed the research objectives and related information behaviors (e.g., information needs, information seeking, information sources and channels, information barriers, etc.) to achieve the objectives at each sub-stage. The study results provided essential information to re-design the information services and strategies that accommodate the scientific R&D lifecycle.

In this study, we investigated scientists' perception of imagination and explored characteristics of scientific imagination. For this, we found out conceptions and characteristics based on literatures which related to imagination. We recruited eight distinguished Korean scientists who have rich research experiences by using Snowball sampling for in-depth interviews (60-90 minutes). All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. From the analysis of interview data, we identified their perceptions of imagination and the nature of scientific imagination which scientists reflect on during their research work. Semi-structured interview protocol was focused on: 1) how scientists perceive 'imagination' and 2) how scientists perceive the role of imagination in their scientific research. As results, we found out that scientists agreed that imagination plays an important role in scientific research process and they perceived imagination as an intrinsic part of human life. The study also indicated that participants have modern viewpoint about imagination. Moreover, we uncovered three characteristics of imagination in the research process. 1) Curiosity and interest have been a driving force for scientists' imagination. 2) When scientists use the imagination, they can be more creative during their research. 3) Imagination contemplated realistic possibilities based on the scientific knowledge, and produced the new ones. Educational implications for utilization of scientific imagination were also suggested.

The purpose of this study lies in identifying Korean scientists' dependency on foreign scientific and technical information (STI), with emphasis on investigating the causes and results. Especially, this study intends to investigate the impacts that a growing dependency on foreign STI might have brought and will bring about on the development of indigenous STI in ROK. To the end, the present discussion covers the following specific research questions: 1) what are the major information sources used by Korean scientists to locate STI necessary for research-related activities\ulcorner 2) to what extent do Korean scientists use foreign STI for research-related activates, as compared to the use of domestic STI\ulcorner 3) what are the major factors causing the information dependency among Korean scientists and what are the results of the growing information dependency\ulcorner And finally, 4) what suggestions can be made for ROK to further its indigenous STI development, while minimizing its dependency on foreign STI\ulcorner Survey method, together with citation analysis method, is employed as the major data collection technique. The survey sample consists of 167 most 'representative' Korean scientists selected on the basis of their research productivity. 167 specially-designed questionnaires were mailed and 104 out of 167 were responded. Follow-up interviews were carried out for 32 out of 104 respondents, who returned the questionnaire but did not answer some specific questions. The data collected from these 104 respondents were analyzed on the basis of two distinguished groups namely, junior and senior scientist groups. Among the 104 respondents, 58 a n.0, ppeared to belong to a group of senior scientists (older than age 45 and finished their final degrees since 1980), and 46 belonged to a group of junior scientists (younger than age 45 and finished their final degrees before 1980). The major findings of the present study include: 1) Korean scientists regard 'scientific and technical journals and books'as the most important information source to obtain the recent STI; 2) their dependency on foreign STI, for the purposes of research and teaching, is extremely high (information dependency for research activities is 88.5%, and that for teaching activities 91.2%); 3) the information dependency of junior scientists are higher than that of senior scientists; 4) Korean scientists' growing information dependency is closely related to both small quantity and low quality of domestically-produced STI, and has a statistically significant relationship with their educational background; and finally, 5) in order to theoretically explain the growing information dependency of Korean scientists, a hypothesis - 'chronic cycle of information dependency' was developed and introduced. The present study suggests the promotion of indigenous STI as a desirable alternative to escape from the 'chronic cycle of information dependency. Localization of the imported foreign STI is suggested as a good strategy for the indigenous STI development, and also suggested are STI policies for both success of localization process and promotion of more efficient STI flows at national and international level.

In this study, we investigated how scientists and teachers engaged in mentoring program are conducting research ethics education and how they are creating an ethical educational environment. A questionnaire survey was given to 32 scientists and 44 teachers conducting mentoring programs for gifted high school students. In the content of research ethics education, most of the respondents opined that they should teach against falsification, plagiarism, and fabrication. Teachers were most likely to teach ethical decision-making in each step of the research process. Most of the scientists said that they should teach how to write research note. For the difficulties, the teachers pointed out the challenging system that focuses only on college entrance exams while the scientists answered that it was difficult to recognize research ethics as the problem of the students themselves. For the teachers, the most affective factor in creating an ethical research environment is the amount of time to teach research ethics while for the scientists, it is the ethics of the mentors. For creating an ethical research environment, the teachers responded with making an atmosphere wherein failure is tolerated, and the scientists responded with increasing the degrees of freedom in results. For the difficulties of creating an ethical research environment, the teachers were constrained by research time while the scientists were pressured about the results. These results provide implications for ways to teach research ethics and for ways to create an ethical research environment in the mentoring program for science-gifted students.

This study aims to explore information seeking behavior of natural scientists when they are writing a research proposal for applying to funding. It focuses on understanding their information needs and information seeking behavior, and factors influencing the behavior. Based on the conceptual framework of task-based information seeking, qualitative research methods including in-depth interviews and diary study are used. The results reveal that a variety of communicative subtasks take place in the process of research proposal writing. Also, the scientists tend to need information related funding opportunities and to research design, and access sources including human resources, documents, online databases and websites to meet their information needs. Finally, the study shows that the scientists' information seeking behavior when writing a proposal is influenced by personal, task-related, and sociocultural factors. This study will be helpful to design effective information services and strategies to assist science scholars applying to research funding.

The purpose of this study is to extract empathy factor in scientists' problem-solving process and to examine how the empathy factor influences scientists' problem-solving situation. In this study, we selected six common persons among the scientists mentioned by creativity researchers. And through their autobiographies and biographies, we extracted elements of empathy from their case of problem-solving and categorized them. We analyzed cases from 12 books and 50 papers using Davis' empathy scale as an analysis framework and extracted common factors. As a result, the scientific empathy elements were extracted from a total of 182 cases, and 33 common elements were found. The validity of this case was verified through the content validity test of the science education specialist group. As a result, the I-CVI average was .86 and the S-CVI average was .90. For the empathy elements that scientists used in problem-solving cases, in cognitive empathy, three elements (empathy through other disciplines, empathy from the perspective of the research object, accommodating others' opinions) were extracted in terms of perspective-taking, and three elements (imagination thought experiment based on observation, thought experiment, feeling like part of object) in fantasy. And in affective empathy, three elements (influenced by fellow researchers' motivation, touching from the subject, excitement studying more) were extracted in terms of empathic concern and two elements (heartache for others' failure in their research, sensitivity to problems) in personal depression. This could not be said to be a perfect match for Davis' empathy, but it would be possible to define the scientific empathy elements based on these common elements found in the scientists' cases.

We developed problem-solving type inquiry learning programs reflecting scientists' research process and analyzed the activities of science-gifted high school students, and the understanding and the effects of the programs after implementation in class. For this study, twelve science-gifted students in the 10th grade participated in the program, which consisted of three different modules - making a cycloidal pendulum, surface growth, and synchronization using metronomes. Diet Cola Test (DCT) was used to find out the effect on the improvement of the ability to design experiments by comparing pre/post scores, with a survey and an interview being conducted after the class. Each module consisted of a series of processes such as questioning the phenomenon scientifically, designing experiments to find solutions, and doing activities to solve the problems. These enable students to experience problem-solving type research process through the program class. According to this analysis, most students were likely to understand the characteristics of problem-solving type inquiry learning programs reflecting the scientists' research process. According to the students, there are some differences between this program class and existing school class. The differences are: 'explaining phenomenon scientifically,' 'designing experiments for themselves,' and 'repeating the experiments several times.' During the class students have to think continuously, design several experiments, and carry them out to solve the problems they found at first. Then finally, they were able to solve the problems. While repeating this kind of activities they have been able to experience the scientists' research process. Also, they showed a positive attitude toward the scientists' research by understanding problem-solving type research process. These problem-solving type inquiry learning programs seem to have positive effects on students in designing experiments and offering the opportunity for critical argumentation on the causes of the phenomena. The results of comparing pre/post scores for DCT revealed that almost every student has improved his/her ability to design experiments. Students who were accustomed to following teacher's instructions have had difficulty in designing the experiments for themselves at the beginning of the class, but gradually, they become used to doing it through the class and finally were able to do it systematically.
