As curriculum statements require addressing ethical and social issues which are raised by modern science and technology, the ability to perceive ethical and social issues regarding science is necessary for teachers to introduce socio-scientific issues (SSI) in their science class. The purpose of this study is to explore elementary school teachers' ethical sensitivity on SSI and attempts to give implications for teacher education. To explore the ethical sensitivity in the context of SSI, the revised version of the Test for Ethical Sensitivity on Science (TESS) was used. Two socio-scientific issues (genetic engineering and radioactive waste) were provided to read and write down five possible questions they believed should be considered before reaching a decision. Data was collected from eighty-two elementary school teachers in Korea. To analyze the ethical sensitivity, the responses including ethical considerations were analyzed by situation and ethical issues. The result showed that 81 out of 82 teacher participants provided at least more than one ethical consideration on each scenario of this study. However, not many teacher could raise various ethical issues and situation that ethical issue might occur. There were only a few teaches who could consider all the situations, 'process of scientific research', 'application of science and technology', and 'science influenced by society', that ethical issues might occur. Especially, teachers failed to consider that the ethical issue can occur in the situation when science is influenced by society. Based on the results, we suggest that during teacher education teachers need to experience finding various ethical issues that can occur in the context of SSI and especially considering the ethical issues when science is influenced by society.

In this study, the characteristics of scholarly communication through the Web and scientific journals are explored, and scholarly communication patterns in two scientific disciplines are compared to reveal the difference. Economics and Computer Science-Information Systems are selected as two disciplines to be analyzed. In the data collection process, 10 keywords are extracted from a database for each subject field, and scholarly Web pages and journal articles related to these keywords are collected and analyzed. Our investigation includes the characteristics of scholarly Web pages, Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis of co-linked Web pages as well as co-cited journal articles, and changes in the scholarly communication activities occurring on the Web and in scientific journals respectively over time. We found certain differences as well as common features in scholarly communication patterns between the Web and scientific journals for both fields of Economics and Computer Science. We also found that scholarly communication occurring on the Web displays unique features for each subtopic within the same field of study.

The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable assessment tool for measuring scientific creative problem solving ability for middle school students. To achieve this aim, an assessment framework, four assessment items, and detailed rubrics for scientific creative problem solving were developed. The assessment framework had three dimensions (i.e. science contents, inquiry process, and thinking skills) and sub-elements for each dimension. The assessment items were tested with 320 middle school students in order to determine reliability, difficulty, and item discrimination. Science teachers and experts in science education checked the validity of the items and the rubrics. The results proved that the assessment tool was reliable enough to evaluate students' scientific creative problem solving skills.

Scientific/technical data whose reliability is authorized have to include physical/chemical constants, authorized property value or authorized scientific statistical values so that the scientists in the same field use them continuously and repeatedly for their research. The data also have to be managed as Standard Reference Data that will be used in other area nationwide by analyzing, evaluating and authorizing the accuracy and reliability of the information with scientific methods. This study suggests a plan for establishing the National Center for Standard Reference Data as well as a necessity for managing the data produced in research process as a national Standard Reference Data. Also, a prototype of research information system for measurement standards is developed and described in detail for research information for measurement standard to be used as a reference data, then a plan to managing national reference data is suggested, in addition.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of students' prior knowledge on scientific reasoning process performing a task of controlling variables with computer simulation and to identify a number of problems that students encounter in scientific discovery. Subjects for this study included 60 Korean students: 27 fifth-grade students from an elementary school; 33 seventh-grade students from a middle school. The sinking objects task involving multivariable causal inference was used. The task was presented as computer simulation. The fifth and seventh-grade students participated individually. A subject was interviewed individually while the investigating a scientific reasoning task. Interviews were videotaped for subsequent analysis. The results of this study indicated that students' prior knowledge had a strong effect on students' experimental intent; the majority of participants focused largely on demonstrating their prior knowledge or their current hypothesis. In addition, studnets' theories that were part of one's prior knowledge had significant impact on formulating hypotheses, testing hypothesis, evaluating evidence, and revising hypothesis. This study suggested that students' performance was characterized by tendencies to generate uninformative experiments, to make conclusion based on inconclusive or insufficient evidence, to ignore, reject, or reinterpret data inconsistent with their prior knowledge, to focus on causal factors and ignore noncausal factors, to have difficulty disconfirming prior knowledge, to have confirmation bias and inference bias (anchoring bias).

To improve research productivity, it is important to acquire up-to-date information quickly. To this end, researchers seek information resources through various channels and methods and utilize them in their research and development processes. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) has developed a platform for integrated scientific and scientific information service called ScienceOn to provide specialized information, infrastructure resources, industry and technology analysis resources in one place to support the research and information ecosystem. Through this process, accessibility and usability are enhanced through the connection and convergence of various information and services. In this study, we look at recent R&D trends in scientific technology academic information integration services and recommended packaging services that can be utilized in batches according to the purpose of use. We look forward to improving national R&D productivity by strengthening the linkage and convergence of scientific and technological information.
This study aimed to explore the characteristics of scientific observation and reasoning of gifted middle-school students in rock identification. Five rock samples that are considered important as per science textbooks, including igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, were provided to 19 first-year middle-school students attending a gifted education center. Students were asked to infer the formation process, type, and name of each rock. The results showed that the characteristics of rocks that students primarily paid attention to included color, texture, and structure. Students immediately succeeded in identifying common rocks based on memory; however, meaningful inferences were not made. In case of rocks that students faced difficulty discriminating, significant reasoning processes were revealed through discourse. In addition, although scientific reasoning was properly constructed based on meaningful observations, there were cases wherein rock identification failed. These results will contribute to determining the current level of understanding of middle-school students in rock identification activities and finding ways to provide students with meaningful scientific observation and inference experiences through rock identification in the school field.

We explored the performance improvement method of automated scoring for scientific argumentation. We analyzed the pattern of argumentation using automated scoring models. For this purpose, we assessed the level of argumentation for student's scientific discourses in classrooms. The dataset consists of four units of argumentation features and argumentation levels for episodes. We utilized argumentation clusters and n-gram to enhance automated scoring accuracy. We used the three supervised learning algorithms resulting in 33 automatic scoring models. As a result of automated scoring, we got a good scoring accuracy of 77.59% on average and up to 85.37%. In this process, we found that argumentation cluster patterns could enhance automated scoring performance accuracy. Then, we analyzed argumentation patterns using the model of decision tree and random forest. Our results were consistent with the previous research in which justification in coordination with claim and evidence determines scientific argumentation quality. Our research method suggests a novel approach for analyzing the quality of scientific argumentation in classrooms.
The formation of early korean scientific community is a dynamic process of korean modern history in which colonialization, liberation, United States Army Military Government and Korean War is included. Particularly, scientist's crossing over the border into north korea and south korea have profound effect on the early stage of our scientific community. This period is so important to understand the nature of korean scientific community that we need to re-interpret the role of 'ideology' in the development of scientific community. On the other hand, war is a important element in our formation of the image of the science. This study purported to interpret the problem of political ideology, it's role in the formation of early scientific society, it's implication on our idea of science positively. Also the study is a an attempt to re-construct the scientist's struggle(1945-1950) to demarcate new science from old, colonial science.
