  • The purpose of this study was to investigate brain activation pattern and functional connectivity network during experimental design on the biological phenomena. Twenty six right-handed healthy science teachers volunteered to be in the present study. To investigate participants' brain activities during the tasks, 3.0T fMRI system with the block experimental-design was used to measure BOLD signals of their brain and SPM2 software package was applied to analyze the acquired initial image data from the fMRI system. According to the analyzed data, superior, middle and inferior frontal gyrus, superior and inferior parietal lobule, fusiform gyrus, lingual gyrus, and bilateral cerebellum were significantly activated during participants' carrying-out experimental design. The network model was consisting of six nodes (ROIs) and its six connections. These results suggested the notion that the activation and connections of these regions mean that experimental design process couldn't succeed just a memory retrieval process. These results enable the scientific experimental design process to be examined from the cognitive neuroscience perspective, and may be used as a basis for developing a teaching-learning program for scientific experimental design such as brain-based science education curriculum.

  • Background Hyaluronic acid fillers can be manufactured using various processes. They have multiple properties, including their concentration, degree of modification, and rheological data. Cohesion is one such property to evaluate gel integrity; however, there is no standardized method for calculating this parameter. This study aimed to evaluate different tests for calculating hyaluronic acid cohesion and discuss the importance of hyaluronic acid cohesion as a consideration when selecting fillers. Methods The cohesion levels of five different hyaluronic acid fillers with different rheological properties were evaluated and compared using the drop weight, compression, tack, and dispersion time tests. Results The cohesion tests yielded different results in the samples. Samples 2 and 4 showed approximately two times the number of droplets when compared with Sample 5 in drop weight test. Samples 1, 2, 3, and 4 were superior to Sample 5 in tack test. Samples 1, 2, and 3 showed cohesive appearances at 95 seconds in most cases in dispersion test. Rheological test results did not reflect the measures of cohesion. Conclusion Although there are no definite standardized tests to evaluate the cohesion of hyaluronic acid fillers, our proposed tests showed similar results for different hyaluronic acid filler products. Further studies are needed to evaluate the cohesion of hyaluronic acid fillers and determine the clinical use of this distinguishing characteristic for clinicians selecting the product of choice. Level of evidence statement: These data are Level IV evidence.

  • This study focuses on proposing measures for the reasonable development of offshore wind farms using the case of Norway, which was the first nation in the world to build a floating offshore wind farm of 80 MW or more. Norwegian authorities conducted a strategic environment assessment in 2012 to select offshore wind farm sites, discovered 15 potential sites, and finally decided on two designated sites in 2020. Based on various survey data such as seabirds, marine environment, and fishing activities, scientific-based spatial analysis was conducted to select additional offshore wind farm sites in line with future development plans. In addition, a government-led steering committee and advisory group have established marine spatial plans since 2002. Therefore, it will be possible to listen to and coordinate the opinions of stakeholders by using the steering committee and advisory group for offshore wind power development. By examining the case of Norway, we suggest the following policy points that can achieve carbon neutrality and develop sustainable offshore wind farms: 1. Establish a government-led steering committee and advisory group that can select potential sites for offshore wind farms by coordinating the opinions of stakeholders 2. Induce efficient and sequential offshore wind farm development by using various survey data and scientific-based spatial analysis.

  • This study aims to investigate tenth graders' understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry (NOSI). A total of 100 public school students participated. A questionnaire of Views about Scientific Inquiry was used to assess their understanding of the NOSI, and data were collected using qualitative research methods such as open-ended questionnaires and, when necessary, semi-structured interviews. By employing a constant comparison method to analyze their responses, five students were consistently categorized as the group with informed views regarding all the eight aspects of the NOSI. The rest of the students showed different levels of understanding regarding each aspect. A large portion of the students represented a group with mixed views about four aspects and informed views about three aspects, whereas naive views about one aspect prevailed among them. The results showed that many students comparatively lacked understanding of the aspect related to the scientists' process of constructing explanations and formulating theories. This study discusses the relationship between its results and the current science curriculum and presents implications for the overall enhancement of students' understanding of the NOSI. Finally, it encourages the acquisition of scientific inquiry ability and makes suggestions to promote further studies.

  • This study investigated science gifted middle school students' philosophical views on scientific knowledge, and the effects of discussing and reading related to the knowledge. Ten eighth-graders in a science gifted class participated in this study. The results can be summarized as follows: 1, At the beginning, the students had one of six positions: (a) relativism (n = 2); (b) falsificationism (n = 2); (c) borderline between relativism and eclecticism (n = 1); (d) borderline between falsificationism and eclecticism (n = 3); (e) borderline among relativism, falsificationism, and eclecticism (n = 1); and (f) borderline inductivism and eclecticism (n = 1). This result indicated that most students had on almost modern philosophical view of scientific knowledge. 2, Some students, who had chosen the item of inductivism in some questions of the instrument at the beginning, maintained their selection despite discussions and readings related to scientific knowledge. The data were examples which indicated the difficulty of changing from a traditional view to a modern view of scientific knowledge.

  • We examined the inquiry activities in the material domain of the elementary science textbooks and experimental workbooks based on 2009 revised curriculum. The analysis framework was SEP (Science and Engineering Practices) - 'Asking questions and defining problems', 'developing and using models', 'planning and carrying out investigations', 'analyzing and interpreting data', 'using mathematics and computational thinking', 'constructing explanations and designing solutions', 'engaging in argument from evidence', and 'obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information'. Sub-SEP of each grade band were also used. The results showed that the $3^{rd}{\sim}5^{th}$ grade science textbooks and workbooks mainly emphasized 'make observations and/or measurements', 'represent data in tables and/or various graphical displays', or 'use evidence to construct or support an explanation or design a solution to a problem' among around 40 sub-SEP. In the case of the inquiry activities for $6^{th}$ grade, majority of sub-SEP included were also only 'collect data to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence to answer scientific questions or test design solutions', 'analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for phenomena' or 'construct a scientific explanation based on valid and reliable evidence obtained from sources'. The type of 'asking questions and defining problems', 'using mathematics and computational thinking' or 'obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information' were little found out of 8 SEP. Educational implications were discussed.

  • Though the SNA (social network analysis ; SNA) has been used for various fields, esp. social science field, ig. politics, journalism, and science of public administration as well as natural science field, there are few studies about the introduction of analysis tools. In order to perform the SNA, collecting data which are fit for the purpose, statistical values deduction and visualized results made by analysis tool are necessary, but the studies, which explain them systematically, are not sufficient yet. So, in this study, we are intended to introduce the analytic process, from the data input to the interpretation, with proven data. using the R program, which is free, in order to help researchers who have any plan to study using the SNA. The proven data in this study are quoted ones in the domestic scientific journals of food, which are those supplied citation index DB of Korean scientific journals. As a study methodology, the SNA is a new paradigm to substitute existing research methods as well as a complement of statistical analysis. Therefore, this study would contribute to vitalization of the SNA.
