Numerous scientists who are engaged in compute-intensive researches require more computing facilities than before, while the computing resource and techniques are increasingly becoming more advanced. For this reason, many works for e-Science environment have been actively invested and established around the world, but still the scientists look for an intuitive experimental environment, which is guaranteed the improved environmental facilities without additional configurations or installations. In this paper, we present an integrated scientific workflow execution environment for Scientific applications supporting workflow design with high performance computing infrastructure and accessibility for web browser. This portal supports automated consecutive execution of computation jobs in order of the form defined by workflow design tool and execution service concerning characteristics of each job to batch over distributed grid resources. Workflow editor of the portal presents a high-level frontend and easy-to-use interface with monitoring service, which shows the status of workflow execution in real time so that user can check the intermediate data during experiments. Therefore, the scientists can take advantages of the environment to improve the productivity of study based on HTC.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the development and application of strategies using fairy tales in elementary school science. For this study, many fairy tales were searched in terms of various characteristics and educational value of the tales. Five fairy tales were selected and reconstructed to suit the 'mirrors and lenses' unit of 5th graders' school science, and teaching strategies using the fairy tales were developed to be used in six lessons. To investigate the effects of instruction using fairy tales, pre/post tests for scientific attitude were administered. To analyze students' perception of their classes, a simple survey was administered through questionnaires. We found from this study that the students related the fairy tales with their own experiences and took an active part in the class that used them. Also, instruction using fairy tales had positive effects on their scientific attitude. Many students said that the science classes were interesting, and the method using fairy tales encouraged students to study hard as well as helped them to understand the context. It was concluded that instruction using fairy tales was an effective method in terms of enhancing learning motivation, encouraging more inquiries, more opportunities to apply the scientific concept, and more positive scientific attitude. We discussed the strategies using fairy tales for implementation in elementary science classes as well.

This paper aims to survey the supply status and demand of the scientific & technological information among the 1,059 small enterprises demanding the support in Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongsangnam-do which have been supported by the Branch of KISTI and to propose the approaches to improve the scientific & technological information system. As the results of this research, Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongsangnam-do have very poor business and R&D environment to the extent that 96.3% of businesses was small business (medium business only for 3.7%) and 31% of total small & medium-cized businesses has less than 10 R&D workers. Small & medium-sized businesses which have demanded the information to KISTI account for only 0.2% in average for 3 years. The information demand types are market trend (26.8%), industrial property right (22.1%), business proposal (19.9%), item exploration (16.8%) and quality certification (8.4%). The supplied informations include scientific and technological data survey, market survey, translation and information application seminar. The business achievements from the information supply include 379 cases in technological development improvement and launch of products, 88 cases in technology certifications and 414 cases in patents and utility design application and registration. By the analysis results, the small and medium-sized businesses have difficulties in using R&D information by themselves. Thus, it's proposed to establish the science and technology information center in southeastern region and develop the information advisors specialized in local specialty industry categories. It's also proposed to expand the manpower and budget of KISTI concerning the information support for small & medium-sized businesses.
The purpose of this study was to develop the ESD program related to creative-experience activity, and to examine the effect of its application. The program was composed of 13 sessions for fifth-grade class in elementary school, including all of the environmental, economic, and social aspects of ESD. This program was connected to the domains of creative hands-on activities, that is, career activities, club activities, self-regulated activities and voluntary service activities. The results was as follows. First, the experimental group to undergo the ESD program related to creative-experience activity did not show significant differences in environmental literacy compared to the control group, but it is proven that this program contributed to the improvement of learners' environmental emotion, skill, and participation. Second, the experimental group did not show significant differences in scientific attitude compared to the control group, but it was considered to affect the elementary students' criticism, self-esteem, and patience in positive and effective manner. In conclusion, more ESD program that cultivate elementary school students' environmental literacy need to be developed continuously, and more intensive research should be conducted to earn better understanding of ESD.
The purpose of this study was to develop instructional strategy for newspaper-based science writing and to examine the effect of its application. The target unit was 'change of weather' and 'a variety of gas' in the sixth grade of elementary school, and the teaching strategy was composed of 3 stages-writing including realistic, interpretative and comprehensive writing. The result of applying this strategy into actual classrooms was as follows. First, it was proven that the science writing strategy using newspaper articles actually helped improving science process skills of learners, in particular, integrated process skills. Second, this strategy for science writing changed the scientific attitude of learners positively. While they read the newspaper articles, their thinking became more elaborate and systemized, which seemed to serve to foster their openness, criticism, and perseverance. Third, the science writing strategy did not contribute to the improvement of learners' science study achievement. To improve the understanding of scientific concepts and principles of learners, it is needed that teaching program combines with argument-based activity organically. The above-mentioned findings show that this instructional strategy using newspaper articles can be applicable as one of effective methods in science writing.
The purpose of this study is to diagnose difficulties and problems that the preservice teachers experience when teaching inquiry-based classes in elementary science and to improve their professionalism through prescriptive instruction consulting utilizing PDRE (preparation, diagnosis, reflective implementation, evaluation) model. The result of this study was as follows. First, preservice teachers considered themselves to be lack of scientific knowledge, but this study confirmed that the application of instruction consulting improved their understandings in scientific concepts and principles and corrected their misconceptions. Second, preservice teachers experienced difficulties in variables that might influence the results of experiments, cautions for the experiments and unexpected results of experiments, and this consulting allowed them to gain instruction ability to cope with such circumstances and solve problems effectively. Third, preservice teachers experienced difficulties in applying instructional model into their classes and preparing lesson plans, but consulting actually made limited but positive changes in their abilities. However, from a longer-term perspective, quantitative increase in their teaching opportunities, the development and distribution of example manuals, and the utilization of various class materials provided by the assistant centers for teaching and learning should be achieved side by side.
The purpose of this research is to analyze what industry professionals and educators perceive as the definition of "research" and foodservice related-research so that the research become rather systematic and useful research. The research result is as follows. First, the independent t-test analysis of the definitions of research showed that the industry professionals were recognizing it as "investigations that are directed toward the discovery of new scientific knowledge that has specific commercial objectives with respect to products or processes or operation" while the educators were regarding it as "original investigation for the advancement of scientific knowledge that does not have a specific commercial objective." Second, the finding about the application of foodservice related-research to decision-making showed that the industry professionals did not fully utilize foodservice research and did not think it is applicable in the industry. That is because academic journal language is too hard for them to understand and they want to see research findings in industry shows and exhibitions or industry magazines in common understandable language. Lastly, foodservice researchers could initiate the dialog between themselves and industry professionals to diagnose the problems of the industry better and provide practical solutions through research findings.

Recently mycorrhizal research has been one of the most fast-growing research areas in modern plant science and microbiology. The application potential of mycorrhizal techniques to agriculture and forestry is enormous in view of the ubiquitous nature of mycorrhizae and known benefits of mycorrhizae to host plants. Unfortunately, very few scientists in Korea are currently involved in mycorrhizal research. When a team of American plant pathologists visited Korea in September 1982 to participate in the Korea-U.S.A. Joint Seminar on Forest Diseases and Insect Pests, they were surprised by the principal author's statement that there was no single research project on mycorrhizae sponsored by Korean government or any scientific institutions. The author initiated a few years ago a research project on the ecology of tree mycorrhizae with a foreign financial support. Major areas of interest were survey of ectomycorrhizae in relation to soil fertility, taxonomic distribution of mycorrhizae among woody plants, identification of ectomycorrhizal fungi, and growth response of woody plants to artificial inoculation. In spite of the enormous application potential of mycorrhizae to agronomic plants, the subject of mycorrhizae has not been recognized by Korean agronomists, foresters or pathologists. The purpose of this review rather written in Korean is to introduce the techniques of mycorrhizal research to Korean scientists and to urge them to participate in challenging new scientific field which might bring us a remarkable increase in crop productivity and tree growth through manipulation of this unique symbiosis. In this review, following topics were discussed in the same order: introduction; brief history of mycorrhizal research; morphology and classification of mycorrhizae; distribution of mycorrhizae in plant kingdom and in soil profile; physiology of mycorrhizae (functions, mineral nutrition, mycorrhizal formation); interaction of mycorrhizae with soil-born plant pathogens. mycorrhizae in nitrogen-fixing plants; application of mycorrhizal techniques to nursery practices (isolation, culture, inoculation, and response); prospect in the future.
Modem biotechnology, specifically for the use of recombinant DNA(rDNA), has brought about a revolution in our ability to control and use life forms. Most of the world's leading countries view biotechnology as the key scientific and industrial discipline for the 21st century and are making all - out efforts for scientific and technological advance in the related fields. The impact of biotechnology on the nation's economy has been growing explosively as such diverse industries invested increasingly on the fruits of biotechnological research. However, such an impact could only be realized through concerted endeavours from the government to private sectors for guarantee of the successful technological advances in this scientific area. There are risks associated with every technology; the classical application of biotechnology has not been exempt. For example, the introduction of bio-tech to agriculture might be destroied the ecosystems. Therefore, to increase the research budgets by the government and private sectors, we need to identify the public attitudes and preference on the acceptance of bio-technology and on the potential economic value of it. For the study, we surveied 959 persons including students enrolled in college of agriculture, Chungnam National University. And to measure the economic value of biotechnology, we use the Contingent Valuation Method(CVM) which is considered as the new approaching method in the bio-technology field.
The u-City construction plan being executed presently involves such problem that services are provided in a suppliers-oriented direction while there are not much discussions on what u-Services citizens should be provided with and what u-Services that city government the supplier shall provide. In order to implement citizen-friendly u-Services the type of u-Services that offer just the right services efficient and convenient for citizens, u-Services should be provided based on active researches on the citizens' use and utilization of u-Services rather than u-Services being provided in suppliers' perspective as so far. To that end, there need be recognition and well-organized methodology that u-Services should be provided through humane, social and scientific analysis of the citizens that are to be provided with u-Services. Thus, in this study, the process of u-Services being transmitted was re-interpreted as background theory to deduce and apply services appropriate for u-Residential Space, and service science for u-Services the scientific and overall approach to seek for service innovation was applied to the development of u-Service deduction method based on such background theory. The u-Service methodology developed based on service science is judged able to deduce and provide u-Services appropriate for the intended services through scientific analysis of citizen-friendly u-Services.
