  • The recent advances in digital imaging and computing technology have resulted in a rapid accumulation of digital media in the personal computing and entertainment industry. In addition, large collections of such data already exist in many scientific application domains such as the geographic information systems (GIS), digital library, trademark imaging, satellite imaging and medical imaging. Thus, the need for content-based retrieval from visual media, such as image and video data, is ever increasing rapidly in many applications.

  • The grand challenge for the 21$^{st$ century is to harness knowledge of the earth`s biological and ecological diversity to understand how they shape global environmental systems. This insight benefits both science and society. Biological and ecological data are among the most diverse and complex in the scientific realm. spanning vast temporal and spatial scales, distant localities. and multiple disciplines. Environmental informatics is an emerging discipline applying information science, ecology, and biodiversity to the understanding and solution of environmental problems. In this paper we give an overview of the experiences of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) with this new multidisciplinary science, discuss the application of computing resources to the study of environmental systems, and outline strategic partnership activities in environmental iformatics that are underway, We hope to foster interactions between ecology, biodiversity, and conservation researchers in East Asia-Pacific Rim and those at SDSC and the Partnership for Biodiversity Informatics.

  • Hadoop is becoming widely adopted in scientific and commercial areas as an open-source distributed data processing framework. Recently, for real-time processing and analysis of data, an attempt to apply high-performance computing technologies to Hadoop is being made. In this paper, we have expanded the Hadoop Filesystem library to support Lustre, which is a popular high-performance parallel distributed filesystem, and implemented the Hadoop MapReduce execution environment over the Lustre filesystem. We analysed Hadoop MapReduce over Lustre by using Hadoop standard benchmark tools. We found that Hadoop MapReduce over Lustre execution has a performance 2-13 times better than a typical Hadoop MapReduce execution.

  • In edge computing scenarios, IoT end devices play a crucial role in relaying and forwarding data to significantly improve IoT network performance. However, traditional routing mechanisms are not applicable to this scenario due to differences in network size and environment. Therefore, it becomes crucial to establish an effective and reliable data transmission path to ensure secure communication between devices. In this paper, we propose a trusted path selection strategy that comprehensively considers multiple attributes, such as link stability and edge cooperation, and selects a stable and secure data transmission path based on the link life cycle, energy level, trust level, and authentication status. In addition, we propose the Stability-based On-demand Multipath Distance Vector (STAOMDV) protocol based on the Ad hoc AOMDV protocol. The STAOMDV protocol implements the collection and updating of link stability attributes during the route discovery and maintenance process. By integrating the STAOMDV protocol with the proposed path selection strategy, a dependable and efficient routing mechanism is established for IoT networks in edge computing scenarios. Simulation results validate that the proposed STAOMDV model achieves a balance in network energy consumption and extends the overall network lifespan.

  • A dual algorithm based on the smooth function proposed by Polyak (1988) is constructed for solving nonlinear programming problems with inequality constraints. It generates a sequence of points converging locally to a Kuhn-Tucker point by solving an unconstrained minimizer of a smooth potential function with a parameter. We study the relationship between eigenvalues of the Hessian of this smooth potential function and the parameter, which is useful for analyzing the effectiveness of the dual algorithm.

  • A multicore system must be able to take full advantage of the program's instruction and data parallelism. This study introduces the data replication technique as a support technique to maximize the program's instruction and data parallelism. Instruction level parallelism can be limited by data dependency. In this case, if data is replicated to each processor core and used, instruction level parallelism can be used to the maximum. The technique proposed in this study can maximize the performance improvement effect when applied to scientific applications such as matrix multiplication operation.

  • This paper presents a MOHA(Many-Task Computing on Hadoop) framework which aims to effectively apply the Many-Task Computing(MTC) technologies originally developed for high-performance processing of many tasks, to the existing Big Data processing platform Hadoop. We present basic concepts, motivation, preliminary results of PoC based on distributed message queue, and future research directions of MOHA. MTC applications may have relatively low I/O requirements per task. However, a very large number of tasks should be efficiently processed with potentially heavy inter-communications based on files. Therefore, MTC applications can show another pattern of data-intensive workloads compared to existing Hadoop applications, typically based on relatively large data block sizes. Through an effective convergence of MTC and Big Data technologies, we can introduce a new MOHA framework which can support the large-scale scientific applications along with the Hadoop ecosystem, which is evolving into a multi-application platform.

  • Recently, researches for quantum computers have been carried out in various fields. Quantum computers performs calculations by utilizing various phenomena and characteristics of quantum mechanics such as quantum entanglement and quantum superposition, thus it is a very complex calculation process compared to classical computers used in the past. In order to simulate a quantum computer, many factors and parameters of a quantum computer need to be analyzed, for example, error verification, optimization, and reliability verification. Therefore, it is necessary to visualize circuits that can intuitively simulate the configuration of the quantum computer components. In this paper, we present a novel visualization method for designing complex quantum computer system, and attempt to create a 3D visualization toolkit to deploy large circuits, provide help a new way to design large-scale quantum computing systems that can be built into future computing systems.

  • Software (SW) education is guided by the government to operate not only computer subject matter but also related subject matter. SW education is highlighted in the 2015 Revised Curriculum and Guide for Operating SW Education. SW education is related with science education. For example, education on algorithms employing SW and activities using sensors/output control can be an effective strategy for scientific inquiry. The method can also be applied in developing Computational Thinking (CT) in students. In this study, we designed lessons to solve everyday scientific problems using Educational Programming Language (EPL) SW and physical computing materials and applied them to high school students. We conducted surveys that were modified from questionnaires of Internet application capability and based on the standard of accomplishment of SW education as well as elements of CT to find out the change in perceptions on programming and CT of students. We also conducted a survey on students' attitude toward science learning after an SW inquiry activity. In the results, perceptions on programming and CT of students were improved through lessons using unplugged activity, EPL SW, and physical computing. In addition, scores for interest, self-directed learning ability, and task commitment were high.
