Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate and analyzed the current status of a dental hygiene curriculum according to the dental hygienist competency. Methods: The study subjects were 59 courses in the department of dental hygiene in G University from April 1 to May 30, 2015. Except for liberal arts, 51 courses were finally selected and analyzed for the relationship between the curriculum and competency. For each course, systematic reviews were made by subject name, core competency, achievement goals, lecture hours, weekly themes, and learning goals. Three experts in the dental hygiene evaluated and analyzed the association of competency and goals. Results: Each course was operated by the goal from one to twenty two competencies of dental hygiene. Achieving one item of competency in a course required 13 hours on the average from minimum 2 hours to maximum 30 hours. More than 20 courses were operated and more than 900 hours were necessary for achieving the competency. The competency included the contents of 'Be able to utilize basic medical and dental knowledge in dental hygiene care and patient care' among the dental hygiene competencies. Conclusions: Competency based dental hygiene education will provide theoretical background for defining the identity of dental hygienist as a health care worker and to encourage professionals who contribute to the recognition of healthy society. Further research should be continued for improving the competency-based dental hygiene curriculum and education methods for implementing the curriculum within the paradigm of health care services.
This study analysed inquiry process and activities of the inquiry area in the chemistry field of middle school science textbooks by the inquiry elements based on the 7th science curriculum. The purpose of this study is to grasp a degree of reflecting the 7th science curriculum in the 9th grade science textbooks, and to find out educational implications for the various inquiry learning. Overall, for the analysis of inquiry elements, basic inquiry elements except classification were well reflected on the middle school science textbooks in 9th grade. However, for the integrated inquiry elements, interpreting data occupies almost half of them. This phenomenon is shown in the analysis of inquiry process and inquiry activities, as well. Especially, project and field trip introduced in the 7th science curriculum are hardly found in the textbooks. 9th grade is classified as an upper grade in the 7th science curriculum in terms of inquiry level. Integrated inquiry elements and inquiry activity types, however, are not thoroughly reflected in the 9th grade science textbooks. It is desirable that a variety of inquiry learning of 9th grade be implemented by reconstructing inquiry area based on the results of this study. Hence the degree and ratio of utilizing the integrated inquiry elements and inquiry activity types to the inquiry area of science textbook in 9th grade should be studied.

This study investigated the effects of national science leading school programs on students' positive experiences about science (PES) and teachers' perceptions of curriculum implementation factors affecting students' PES. For this study, Test for Indicators of Positive Experiences about Science (TIPES) was administered to a total of 11,488 students from 117 national science leading schools and 1,315 students from 50 normal counterpart schools. In addition, a total of 105 teachers were given a survey asking their curriculum implementation levels and perceptions on importance and performance levels of each identified factor that was known to influence students' PES. Students' total PES scores and scores in five sub-components of PES were widely varied across science leading school program types. In general, participating teachers reported common curriculum implementation factors that most positively affected students' PES including 'science-related activities out of school,' 'student-centered research projects,' 'ICT-related materials' and 'performance assessment.' Based on these results, implications for science education were discussed.

The aims of this research are to analyze the representations and conceptual sequence of eye vision in Korean science textbooks and to suggest a contents construct about eye vision where the conceptual sequence is considered. Research method was literature review, and the literatures that were used for analysis were the 7th Korean science curriculum which was revised in 1997, and the science and physics textbooks developed based on the 7th Korean science curriculum. The research results are as follows: 1) Although the science curriculum seems to have no problem on sequence in the eye vision concepts, the science and physics textbooks based on the curriculum reveal problems on the sequence in the eye vision concepts; 2) Some Korean science textbooks explain retinal image formation according to the Alhazen's idea, except in inverse image; 3) Some Korean science textbooks explain about the reasons of near- and far-sightedness without consistency between the textbooks for 7th and 8th grade students; 4) A few Korean science textbooks give an inappropriate explanation about the principle of eye sight correction by eye glasses; 5) According to the analysis result, the concepts related to eye vision should be presented in the order of explanation about light refraction phenomena, image formation process by convex lens, structure of human eye and retinal image formation process, correction of eye sight using lens.
This study was intended to suggest the desirable direction in the 7th national curriculum revision through the analysis of the elementary science textbooks in the 6th national curriculum. The analysis system was composed of three categories, (1)knowledge (2)inquiry process and (3)attitude. And knowledge was divided into fact, concept and rule. And inquiry process was divided into thirteen subcategories such as manipulating experimental apparatus, observing, measuring, recording data, classifying, interpreting/ predicting, determining relationship/ causal explanation, extrapolating/ interpolating, drawing conclusions/ formulating a generalization or model, evaluating, formulating a problem, generating a hypothesis and designing an experiment/ controlling variables. Each sentence in the textbooks was considered as an analyzing unit. The frequency and percentage of each category were counted and the ratios were calculated. The findings could be summarized as follows: 1. The content of the elementary science textbooks was composed of knowledge 10.3%, inquiry process 88.8%, attitude 0.8% respectively. 2. As increasing the grades, the ratio of knowledge showed high frequency, but that of attitude showed low frequency. 3. In All the grades, the ratio of observing was the highest in inquiry process. 4. In the domain of physics and chemistry, the manipulating experimental apparatus showed high frequency. In the domain of biology and earth science, the role of observing was emphasized.

This study suggests ameliorated Library and Information Science education, and its curriculum for education of national subject specialists. For that purpose, this study investigates and compares four internal universities, three American universities along with the figures of the present and future subjects to face updated educational plans and prepare to become a new information specialist at ALA(American Library Association), ALISE(Association for Library and Information Science Education), and other agents. The results of this study can be used as the basic data for training 'subject specialist' in the university curriculum.
The purpose of this study was to develop the quality of the textbook and to find out reasonable selection and structure by examining and analyzing the cognition of teacher and students on the structure and contents of elementary science textbook in the 7th curriculum. The findings of this study were as follows: First, as a result of the students’ cognition, their interest level of the learning contents was high and the degree of the difficulty of the learning contents was low on the whole. Second, as a result of the teachers’ cognition of contents of the textbook, teachers who taught third graders understood that the third graders have relatively much contents to be studied and the level of the contents of the textbook was high. On the other hand, fourth graders’ teachers recognized that contents to be studied and the level of the contents were appropriate. And they understood that there were much work to be studied in the units which were difficult and there were difference between contents to be studied and the degree of the difficulty in some units such as life or the earth fold. Third, as a result of the teachers' cognition of structure of the textbook. teachers were very affirmative to reduce school hours. They understood that current numbers and scale of the unit were appropriate. Teachers were satisfied with the structure of elementary science textbook in the 7th curriculum on the whole.

The Korean education curriculum is making efforts to improve education to foster competencies that the future society demands through the 2007 and 2009 revised curriculum. The revised curricula focus on enhanced articulation for the quality curriculum. In this study, the curriculum is analyzed for vertical and horizontal articulation. In addition, the study found a problem in Korea's curriculum through international comparison and sought improvement. Furthermore, the study compared internationally articulation of the concept of photosynthesis, of which the results are as follows. First, our science curriculum focuses on vertical articulation and has relatively neglected the problem of horizontal articulation. To compensate for this problem, curriculum design should introduce aspects of 'nature' and 'environment' and should consider the interests and concerns of students, as countries with high horizontal articulation do. Second, the actual education field has a problem with the a lack of continuity and sequence because of concentration of concept in a specific grade or simply repeating the concept across multiple grades. These results have led to alternative proposals that should arrange basis of concept configuration such as 'Big Idea' and should establish the adoption of 'systems' frequently appearing in the other curricula. Finally, there may be mentioned a lack of research on students' learning progression, which can be a common standard of horizontal and vertical articulation. Research on learning progression has been a trend overseas, but there exists no study to fit Korea's situation, so education fields need to conduct the appropriate research on learning progression as part of the commitment to high-quality curriculum.
The purpose of this study is to examine the teacher expertise to be evaluated in the secondary science teacher employment test (TET, hereafter) in order to respond to changes in educational environments including the transition to competency-based curriculum, and ways to improve the first exam in major areas in the current TET. For this purpose, Delphi surveys and in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 professors of science education who have experience in the TET. According to the research results, teacher expertise such as subject teaching, student understanding, intelligence information utilization, community competencies, and so on were suggested. Ways to improve science content exam in the TET include securing fairness and validity by increasing the number of questions, strengthening the connection with the secondary school curriculum, updating assessment areas for certificate subjects periodically, etc. Ways to improve science education exam in the TET include research and development on the types of science education questions, introducing essay test to science education exam, development of a standardized curriculum on science education, etc. Based on the research results, the necessity of revising the curriculum for teacher training colleges, differentiating curriculum between teachers' colleges and natural science colleges, and reforming the teacher training system by introducing graduate school of education were suggested.
This study examined the implications of a place-based earth science program integrated with Mathematics. 11 pre-service earth science teachers and 22 middle school students participated in the service education activities of earth science for 30 hours focusing on the measurement of the earth's size through earth science experiments as part of the middle school curriculum. In order to minimize errors that may occur during the earth's size measurement experiments using Eratosthenes's shadows length method of the ancient Greek era, the actual data were collected after triangulation ratios were conducted in the locations of two middle schools: one in remote metropolitan and the other in rural area. The two schools' students shared the final estimate result. Through this process, they learned the mathematical method to express the actual data effectively. Participants, experienced the importance and difficulty of the repetitive and accurate data acquisition process, and also discussed the causes of errors included in the final results. It implies that a Place-Based Earth Science Program activity can contribute to students' increased-understanding of the characteristics of earth science inquiry and to developing their problem solving skills, thinking ability, and communication skills as well, which are commonly emphasized in science and mathematics in the 2015 reunion curriculum. It is expected that a place-based science program can provide a foundation for developing an integrated curriculum of mathematics and science.
