Satisfaction of Undergraduates with Library and Information Science Course and Some Factors that Influence their Choice of the Programme

  • This study was conducted to assess the level of satisfaction of undergraduates with the Library and Information Science (LIS) course and some of the factors that influence their choice of the programme. The population of the study was all the 400 level undergraduates in the Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt. A structured questionnaire, made up of three parts, was utilized for data collection. The first part involved the level of satisfaction of the respondents with the LIS programme while the second and third parts involved the influence of parents and peers on the respondents' choice of LIS programme, respectively. Out of the 21 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 20 were retrieved indicating a 95.2% response rate with 75% (15) male and 25% (5) female. Data were analyzed using percentages and simple regression analysis. Results indicated that the respondents were highly satisfied with the choice of LIS programme and would recommend the programme to others. Parental influence on the respondents' choice of LIS programme was minimal accounting for 7.8% of the changes in the choice of the programme while peer influence on the respondents' choice of the programme was substantial accounting for 78.0% of the changes in the choice of the programme. The fact that the respondents were satisfied with their choice of career in LIS is a strong indication that they would be committed to providing excellent service in librarianship needed to cater for the mutated information requirements of the society.

  • We consider some dependability management systems(IEC300, NASA AHB5300.1 and DIN VDE 0801) with reference on IEC300. Part I of IEC300(IEC300-1) covers the essential features of a comprehensive dependability programme for the planning, organization, direction, and control of resources to produce products which will be reliable and maintainable. We consider the contents of IEC300-1; scope, normative references, definitions, management responsibilities, product or project independent programme elements and project specific programme elements.

새로운 과학 교육 프로그램의 개발과 평가 I - 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 이용한 물리 탐구 실험 연수를 중심으로 - (A development and evaluation of new training program for science teacher - focused on computer simulation inquiry experiments in physics -)

  • 본 연구에서는 Interactive Physics 시뮬레이션 프로그램을 이용한 교사 연수 프로그램을 개발하여 실시하고 그 효과를 분석하였다. 본 연수 프로그램의 목적에는 시뮬레이션 프로그램 활용 능력의 배양뿐 아니라, 물리개념의 이해와 탐구 기능의 습득, 나아가 과학적 탐구 학습 지도 능력의 향상이 포함되었다. 연수 프로그램은 15시간 동안 실시되었으며, 연수 후 설문지를 통해 효과를 조사하였다. 주요한 조사 결과는 다음과 같다: (1) 11년 경력 이상의 많은 교사들도 자발적으로 참여하였다. (2) 참여동기가 주로 내적인 동기였으며, 점수와 같은 외적인 동기는 없었다. (3) 연수의 내용 수준이 적절하였고, 연수자들이 모두 연수를 흥미로와 했다. 그러나 시간은 부족한 편이어서, 앞으로 2배 (30시간)정도로 확장할 필요가 있었다. (4) 강사의 전문성과 연수 환경에 대해서는 만족하였으며, 부분적으로 교육방법의 개선이나 교육자가 의사소통을 원활하지 위한 개선점이 발견되었다. (5) 연수자들은 모두 연수를 만족하였으며, 컴퓨터 활용 능력뿐 아니라, 개념이해나 탐구기능 습득, 나아가 탐구의 지도능력 함양에 대해 긍정적으로 응답하여 연수 목적이 달성되었음을 알 수 있었다. (6)대부분의 교사들이 현장에서 시뮬레이션을 활용하고 싶고 활용할 계획이라고 응답하였다.

Investigation of thorium separation from rare-earth extraction residue via electrosorption with carbon based electrode toward reducing waste volume

  • Rare-earth (RE) industries generate a massive amount of radioactive residue containing high thorium concentrations. Due to the fact that thorium is considered a non-economic element, large volume of these RE processed residues are commonly disposed of without treatment. It is essential to study an appropriate treatment that could reduce the volume of waste for final disposition. To this end, this research investigates the applicability of carbon-based adsorbent in separating thorium from aqueous phase sulphate is obtained from the cracking and leaching process of solid rare-earth by-product residue. Adsorption of thorium from the aqueous phase sulphate by carbon-based electrodes was investigated through electrosorption experiments conducted at a duration of 180 minutes with a positive potential variable range of +0.2V to +0.6V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Through this research, the specific capacity obtained was equivalent to 1.0 to 5.14 mg-Th/g-Carbon. Furthermore, electrosorption of thorium ions from aqueous phase sulphate is found to be most favorable at a higher positive potential of +0.6V (vs. Ag/AgCl). This study's findings elucidate the removal of thorium from the rare-earth residue by carbon-based electrodes and simultaneously its potential to reduce disposal waste of untreated residue.

Science Teacher Education in Hong Kong

  • Initial science teacher education in Hong Kong is provided by the Post-graduate Diploma in Education Programme (PGDE) for both pre-service and in-service secondary school teachers. This programme includes a balanced treatment of subject curriculum and teaching in science, general pedagogical knowledge and skills, educational psychology and school administration. The science courses in this programme also have some units that equip science teachers with the knowledge and skills that are essential for teaching a science curriculum that emphasises conceptual change and understanding of the nature and methods of science. This emphasis is illustrated by two studies: (1) Developing a conceptual change model of instruction in Biology teachers, and (2) Constructing understanding of the nature and methods of science.

Middle School Students' Characteristics of Spatial Ability in Earth Science Activity using Orienteering

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze students' learning characteristics regarding spatial ability, orienteering ability and earth science content learning ability and their relationship through development and application of earth science activities using orienteering. The programme aims to improve students' spatial ability using orienteering activity which requires spatial ability. Topics in the programme included map, compass, contour, movement of celestial, and constellation application. Students were to orienteer in the field using the method they learned in class. This programme was applied to five 7th graders. The results are, first, students who have positive attitude toward science and do well at school tended to perceive their orienteering ability high. Second, all parts of spatial ability, spatial visualization, spatial orientation, spatial relation were used during orienteering, especially spatial visualization and spatial orientation. The relationship between spatial ability, orienteering ability, and earth science content learning abilities was not clear. However, orienteering ability and earth science content learning ability were in similar tendency.

Assessment of natural radionuclides and heavy metals contamination to the environment: Case study of Malaysian unregulated tin-tailing processing industry

  • The tin tailing processing industry in Malaysia has operated with minimal regard and awareness for material management and working environment safety, impacting the environment and workers in aspects of radiation and heavy metal exposure. RIA was conducted where environmental samples were analyzed, revealing concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K between the range of 0.1-10.0, 0.0-25.7, and 0.1-5.8 Bq/g respectively, resulting in the AED exceeding UNCEAR recommended value and regulation limit enforced by AELB (1 mSv/y). Raeq calculated indicates that samples collected pose a significant threat to human health from gamma-ray exposure. Assessment of heavy metal content via pollution indices of soil and sediment showed significant contamination and enrichment from processing activities conducted. As and Fe were two of the highest metals exposed both via soil ingestion with an average of 4.6 × 10-3 mg/kg-day and 1.4 × 10-4 mg/kg-day, and dermal contact with an average of 5.6 × 10-4 mg/kg-day and 6.0 × 10-4. mg/kg-day respectively. Exposure via accidental ingestion of soil and sediment could potentially cause adverse non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health effect towards workers in the industry. Correlation analysis indicates the presence of a relationship between the concentration of NORM and trace elements.
