Development of a Prototype System for the Optical-Video-Detection and Characterisation of Meteors/Fireballs in South Korea

  • During a six-month period (autumn 2014 within the framework of a research & education project) we have constructed a professional double-station video-meteor detection network at the SOAO and BOAO mountain summits. Meteor detection is achieved by pixel-to-pixel motion-detection trigger. Each station is nearly autonomous and has three cameras with fixed viewing angles monitoring part of the night-sky over Korea. Various field of views are in use for testing purpose and captured video-meteor data is automatically transferred to a central FTP server on a nightly basis. Data is publicly available. The network has been operational since September 2014 and could serve as a prototype system for a more extended national network for meteor/fireball monitoring and detection in Korean airspace.   • Kyung Hee university invented the Transformable Reflective Telescope (TRT) for optical experiment and education. The TRT kit can transform into three optical configurations from Newtonian to Cassegrain to Gregorian by exchanging the secondary mirror. We designed the Ebert-Fastie spectrograph as an extension of the TRT kit. The primary mirror of the TRT kit serves as both collimator and camera lens, and the reflective grating as the dispersing element is placed along the optical axis of the primary mirror. We designed and fabricated the grating holder and the source units using 3D printer. Baffle was also fabricated to suppress the stray light, which was reduced by 83%. The spectrograph can observe the optical wavelength range (4000Å~7000Å). Measured resolving power (R=λ/Δλ) was ~700 with slit width of 0.18mm. The spectrograph is optimized for f/24, and the spectral pixel scale is 0.49Å/pixel with Canon 550D detector. We present the sample spectra of discharged Ne, Ar and Kr gases. The flexible setting and high performance make this spectrograph a useful tool for education and experiment.

  • We give a detailed description of the installation and operation of a double-station meteor detection system which formed part of a research & education project between Korea Astronomy Space Science Institute (KASI) and Daejeon Science Highschool. A similar system is currently not existing in South Korea. A total of six light-sensitive CCD cameras were installed with three cameras at SOAO and three cameras at BOAO observatory. A double-station observation of a meteor event enables the determination of the three-dimensional heliocentric orbit in space. This project was initiated in response to the Jinju fireball event in March 2014. The cameras were installed in October/November 2014. The two stations are identical in hardware as well as software. Each station employes sensitive "Watec-902H2" cameras in combination with relatively fast f/1.2 lenses. Various fields of views were used for measuring differences in detection rates of meteor events. We employed the SonotaCo UFO software suite for meteor detection and their subsequent analysis. The system setup as well as installation/operation experience is described and first results are presented.   • 21st century has begun as an age of green growth. Development paradigms disregarding environmental sustainability are being changed and henceforth, stronger efforts should be made to discover and utilize green values. With the importance of green values, rural amenity which is in the spotlight as a new channel to change the way people think about depressed agriculture and rural community could be the key to discover green values of rural area. This study is to emphasize rural amenity and to rectify prejudiced and distorted contents of agriculture and rural community in agricultural highschool textbooks. By doing this, students of agricultural highschool who will lead agriculture in the future will come to recognize the importance of agriculture and rural area and discovering it's values. This study was done through analysis and development of contents in 39 kinds of textbooks of Agricultural highschool. A content analysis was employed to examine to what extent the contents on agriculture and rural community were reflected in the textbooks of agriculture highschool. And 262 new education contents formulating positive and exact rural amenity concept were developed and 62 of them were included in textbooks.

Difference of the science and the general high school for the relation of thinking style and academic achievement (사고양식과 학업성취의 관계에 대한 과학고생과 일반학생의 차이)

  • This study verified the differences of thinking styles between science highschool students and general students in reference to academic achievement. The subjects of this study are 211 high school students, who were composed of 122 science school students and 93 general school students. The significant results of this study are as follows: First, science highschool students showed more distinguishable differences in thinking style than general highschool students. Second, the former rather than the latter is revealed to be more variable in thinking styles explaining academic achievement. Next, in case of science highschool students, thinking style which is affected by intelligence is turned out to be an indirect factor influencing academic achievement. Finally, I verified the importance of distinction of science highschool students and the usefulness of thinking styles, gave suggestions on the reformation and direction of current school education of science-gifted students.

  • Existing design education in industrial highschool is heavily dependent on formal education, which is far from teaching practical technique. In other words, Current curriculum of industrial highschool is going all out to place emphasis on the necessity of design education and ignores its failures or problems. Factually, although students of industrial high school should procure training in basic skills that they will need to quality for good jobs in later life, there don't put into practice substantial education. Accordingly, this study will develope Supplementary Class for substantial and effective design education in industrial highschool on the focus of proper technical education which domestic companies need. Especially, the researcher selected web design education which is favored the most by companies in information society, which is adopting as a required course in industrial highschool.

Analysis of Highschool Students' Misconception Textbooks Related to the Declination (편각과 관련된 고등학생들의 오개념 및 교과서 분석)

  • The declination is an important concept because it is the underlying concept to understand the plate tectonics and also is used to decide one's location by using the compass and the map in real life. So this study surveys the description of declination being used in six of the seventh curriculum earth science II textbooks followed by the investigation of the possible of misconceptions that the highschool students might have. Utilizing an inventory of key concept, this study examines the actual misconceptions of highschool students, and investigates the relationship between misconceptions and textbooks. As a result, highschool students possess some misconceptions particularly with respect to the magnetic north pole which is caused by a lack of explanation about declination and by a wrong illustration. Therefore we suggest that detailed explanations of declination with non-dipole effect and precise illustrations be provided in the textbook for students th have a better understanding about declination.

  • Solar thermochemical syngas and hydrogen production process bv redox system of metal oxide was performed under direct irradiation of the metal oxide on the SiC ceramic foam device using solar simulator. $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ nanotube has been synthesized by anodic oxidation method. Syngas and hydrogen production process is one of the promising chemical pathway for storage and transportation of solar heat by converting solar energy to chemical energy. The produced syngas had the $H_2/CO$ ratio of 2, which was suitable for methanol synthesis or Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process. After ten cycles of redox reaction, $CeO_2$ was analyzed using XRD pattern and SEM image in order to characterize the physical and chemical change of metal oxide at the high temperature.
