The purposes of this study were to identify education expenditure and to analyze contributing factors to total education expenditure for two children among married couples. For these purposes, total sample of 1,256 married couples those having two children of both pre-school aged and school aged were selected, and total sample was divided into four groups by first child's school aged; those were pre-school aged(375), elementary school aged(385), middle & high school aged(248) & college aged(248). Statistics used for the analysis were frequencies, means, percentile, and tobit and OLS analysis. The results were as follows. First, the households those having the first child of pre-school aged didn't spent for public education expenditure, while public education xpenditure of school aged increased continuously. The households having the first child of high school aged spent the most private education expenditure among four groups, however, total education expenditure of the households having the first child in college aged spent the most education expenditure were household head's age, family size, home ownership and financial asset amount, and elementary school-aged's factors were household head's age, education level, home ownership and total household income. Also, household head's education level, wife's expectation of future economy, residence, total household income had significant effects on total education expenditure in middle and high school-aged, and household head's job, home ownership, contact with neighborhood, residence and Engel's coefficient were significant variables in college aged.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the competence and the methods of problem solving in four operations word problems based on the informal knowledges by five-year-old children. The numbers which are contained in problems consist of the numbers bigger than 5 and smaller than 10. The subjects were 21 five-year-old children who didn't learn four operations. The interview with observation was used in this research. Researcher gave the various materials to children and permitted to use them for problem solving. And researcher read the word problems to children and children solved the problems. The results are as follows: five-year-old children have the competence of problem solving in four operations word problems. They used mental computation or counting all materials strategy in addition problem. The methods of problem solving were similar to that of addition in subtraction, multiplication and division, but the rate of success was different. Children performed poor1y in division word problems. According to this research, we know that kindergarten educators should be interested in children's informal knowledges of four operations including shapes, patterns, statistics and probability. For this, it is needed to developed the curriculum and programs for informal mathematical experiences.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the amount of daily fluoride intake among children using fluoride-containing dentifrice in an effort to pave the way for the selection of criteria for the development of safe dentifrice for different age groups to make a contribution to children's oral health. Methods : This study was implemented over approximately six months from May to October 2008 by recruiting subjects, asking their consent, conducting a survey, collecting samples and analyzing the collected data. The subjects in this study were preschool residents in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, who were at the western age of 2 to 5. The amount of fluoride withdrawn from their one-time toothbrushing was measured in two different ways. One was by using HMDS-facilitated modified diffusion method and fluoride ion electrode, and the other was by applying ion chromatography without the diffusion procedure. Results : The fluoride intake accounted for $46.5{\pm}19.1$ percent of the amount of fluoride used, and that percentage was statistically significantly different according to age(p<0.01). The one-time fluoride intake from dentifrice per weight(kg) was a mean of $0.009{\pm}0.006mg$. As a result of multiplying this amount by daily toothbrushing frequency, the daily fluoride intake from dentifrice per weight(kg) appeared to be $0.023{\pm}0.016mg$ on average. There was a large difference among the children in that regard, since that ranged from a low of 0.003mg to a high of 0.070mg. And age made a statistically significant difference to that(p<0.01). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings of the study showed that the children's daily fluoride intake from dentifrice per weight was lower than the recommended daily fluoride intake from diets per weight for young children aged 1 to 12(0.05-0.07mg). However, there was a great disparity among the children in that aspect, and they are likely to take more fluoride from other things as well. Therefore it is required to prepare separate criteria for preschool and school-aged children.
Purpose: On the basis of evidence, we aimed to reevaluate the necessity of the empirical proton pump inhibitor (PPI) trial for children with suspected gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Methods: We analyzed the frequency of GERD in 85 school-age children with gastroesophageal reflux (GER) symptoms, who received 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring and/or upper endoscopy. According to the reflux index (RI), the children were classified into normal (RI <5%), intermediate (5%${\leq}$ RI <10%), or abnormal (RI ${\geq}$10%) groups. Results: Fifty six were female and 29 were male. Their mean age was $12.6{\pm}0.5$ (${\pm}$standard deviation) years (range: 6.8-18.6). The RI analysis showed that the normal group included 76 patients (89.4%), the intermediate group included 6 patients (7.1%), and the abnormal group included 3 patients (3.5%). The DeMeester score was $5.93{\pm}4.65$, $14.68{\pm}7.86$ and $40.37{\pm}12.96$ for the normal, intermediate and abnormal group, respectively (p=0.001). The longest reflux time was $5.56{\pm}6.00$ minutes, $9.53{\pm}7.84$ minutes, and $19.46{\pm}8.35$ minutes in the normal, intermediate, and abnormal group, respectively (p=0.031). Endoscopic findings showed reflux esophagitis in 7 patients. On the basis of the Los Angeles Classification of Esophagitis, 5 of these patients were included in group A, 1 patient, in group B and 1 patient, in group C. Conclusion: The incidence of GERD was very low in school-age children with GER symptoms. Therefore, injudicious diagnostic PPI trials would be postponed until the actual prevalence of GERD is verified in future prospective studies.
Fathering practices were assessed by the modified version of the fathering Practices Scale while children's social adjustment was assessed by the Social Adjustment Scale in this study of 405 first to sixth grade children and their fathers. Fathering practices differed by father's age, education, occupation, amount of time with children, extent of participation in children's school activities, mother's job status, and children's birth order. Children's social adjustment varied by father's education, amount of time with children, and participation in children's school activities. There were correlations among all four factors of children's social adjustment and all eight factors of fathering practices. Father's responsibility for children was the strongest predictor of children's social adjustment.
The purpose of this study was to analyze a causal relations of children's learned helplessness, stress, perception of self-competence and mother's childrearing attitudes. The subjects were 370 of 4th and 6th grade in elementary school and the second grade in junior high school in Busan and their's mothers. The instruments used for this study were learned helplessness scale, stress scale, self-perception profile for children, and childrearing attitude scale. The data was analyzed with pearson's correlation, multiple regression and path analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows : 1. Children's global self-worth, social self, age and mother's controlling childrearing attitudes predicted children's stress. 21% of the variance of children's stress was explained by these variables. 2. Children's stress, global self-worth, academic and social self predicted children's learned helplessness. 54% of the variance of children's learned helplessness was explained by these variables. 3. 1) Global self-worth was the first contribution and had a indirect effect through stress as well as a direct effect on children's learned helplessness. 2) Children's stress and academic self had direct effect on children's learned helplessness. 3) Children's social self had a indirect effect through stress as well as a direct effect on children's learned helplessness. 4) Mother's affectionate childrearing attitudes had indirect effect through academic, and social self and global self-worth on children's learned helplessness. Mother's controlling childrearing attitudes had indirect effect through stress on children's learned helplessness. Children's age had a indirect effect through global self-worth and stress and children's sex had a indirect effect through social self on children's learned helplessness.
This study investigated children's cognition of physically impossible televised events by age and types of tasks. The 67 subjects were 3-, 5-, and 7-year-old children from 1 day care center and 1 elementary school in Seoul. Children's responses were taped and transcribed. Cognition about the events were measured by recognition of impossibility, possibility of replication, and reasons for the possibility of replication of the events. Data were analysed by ANOVA(repeated measure) and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test. Children's cognitions about the events varied by age groups. Three-year-old children's recognition of the 3 tasks was different from that of the 5-and 7-year-old children; while 3-year-olds interpreted the events on TV as real, 5- and 7-year-olds considered them to be unreal.
The purpose of this research is to delineate the effect of maternal variables of the children's depression. Such variables as the mother's age, her education level and maternal parenting stress have been chosen for the analysis. The sample subject were 659 pairs of fifth/sixth grade of elementary school and first/second grade of middle school and their mothers. The data were analyzed frequency, percentage, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The major findings of the research are as follows : First, the children's depression is significantly related to mother's education level but the children's depression is not significantly related to mother's age. Second, parenting stress related to temperament, relationship and learning expectation is significantly related to children's depression. Third, the result of step multiple regression analysis on the effects of the maternal variables to the children's depression indicates that maternal parenting stress related to temperament, relationship and mother education level are the significant contributing factor. All in all, the maternal variables account for 7% of the children's depression score.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of herbal medicine in children's growth. Methods 51 children from the age of 5 to 16 were participated in this study (27 of boys and 24 of girls). The participants were from the department of the pediatrics in Daegu hanny university oriental medical hospital. They were measured their body composition and their bone age, the height percentile of their first and the last visit. Then, those were compared by the Korean Association of Pediatrics' Growth Statistics Curve. Results 1. Generally, total children's average height and weight were significantly increased after the herbal medical treatment. The differences between their height and the general populations' average height, their weight and general populations' average weight were significantly decreased after the treatment. 2. Total children's average soft lean mass, body fat mass, BMI were also significantly increased after the herbal medical treatment. 3. The mean height percentiles of the children has increased by 1.47 percentile. The mean weight percentiles of the children decreased 1.08 percentile. 4. The height percentiles were increased in every group except the group of boys younger than 9 and older than 12 year old. Other than the group of boys younger than 9-year-old and the group of 10-11-year-old boys, every group showed decreasing weight percentile. Conclusions The herbal medical treatment helped children with growth retardation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a school adaptation program (SAP) for school-age children with emotional and behavioral problems who attended public elementary schools. Methods: SAP, developed by the authors, addresses school adaptation and academic efficacy and consists of 10 sessions based on five categories (i.e., school life, classroom activity, relationship with friends, relationship with teacher, and school environment). Sixteen children with emotional and behavior problems answered questionnaires before and after participation in the program. Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between pre and post-test on school adaptation (t=-2.78, p=.015) and academic efficacy (t=-4.62, p<.001) after the 10 sessions of SAP. Conclusion: The results indicate that SAP can could serve as a practical program for school nurses and teachers. Further studies based on SAP in various school settings are recommended.
