  • Purpose: This study evaluated a smoking education program in middle schools in Busan. School nurses and health teachers performing additional job development with a variety of human resources on smoking education for adolescents were investigated. Method: The subjects were obtained from 133 middle schools located in Busan, and data were collected from January 10, 2005 to February 19, 2005. The data was analyzed using the descriptive statistics, multiple response and t-test on SPSS 12.0 for Windows. Results: Schools that had school nurses undertook 67% of all smoking education programs. However, 78.3% of smoking education programs were undertaken in schools that used health teachers holding an additional job, those who had other jobs, and teachers in charge of school discipline. The health teachers holding an additional job reported that they had difficulty with smoking education due to a 'lack of professionalism' (t=-2.776, p=.006). In addition, the school nurses reported that 'they had insufficient time for non-smoking education' (t=2.440, p=.016). Conclusion: The results of this study show that school nurses should be in charge of the smoking education programs developed in the middle schools in Busan.

Method: A survey using a self reported questionnaire was done to identify areas where education is needed. A stratified random sampling method was employed to select 1.746 school health nurses and to receive the respondings from 584 school health nurses. The contents of the module for the education program were determined to be counseling and teaching techniques to meet health care needs related to sex, and cessation of smoking. The researchers wrote the educational content for the program, and the storyboards and illustrations appropriate to the module were constructed and the domain was registered. The web site was named 'www.healthyyouth.org'. Results: Three topics were identified where education is needed: youth and sex, youth and smoking, and counseling techniques for children, and programs were developed under the web site named. 'www.healthyyouth.org'. Over 90 percent of the respondents reported that the web site was useful and 100 percent reported that they would recommend the web site to other school health nurses. Conclusion: The web based program allowed school health nurses to study and improve their health care knowledge and skills. Since almost all schools in Korea have personal computers in the infirmary, accessibility to the program is excellent. The data for this study were collected from the sample consisted of the middle school in Chongju for two weeks period in December, 2001. In analyzing the data, t-test, one-way ANOVA and $x^2$-test were done by using SPSS 10.1 for window to compare data between the sexes of the students and grades of the students. A Pearson's correlation analysis was carried out to determine the relationships among the diagnostic variables. The Pearson's correlation between health behavior and life satisfaction was .52, which was significant at the level of P<.01. The Pearson's correlation between drug use behavior and mental health was .40, which was significant at the level of P<.01. The relationships between each diagnosis variable suggested by the PRECEDE model had been experimentally proven to be valid, supporting the conceptual framework of the study as appropriate for assessing the students' health and health education needs. The significance of this research is that it has diagnosed the needs of middle school health education by assessment of factors related to health hazard behaviors and meantal health of the students. The research findings suggest an integrated system of school health education to be contrieved to enhance the effectiveness of the education by strengthening the related factors such as parents' interest to improve the health of middle school students.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the education contents on safe use of medications in healthcare textbooks for elementary, middle and high schools. Methods: We examined 6 textbooks for the $5^{th}$ grade, 4 textbooks for middle school, 3 textbooks for high school, and 5 education materials published by the Korea Food and Drug Administration, National Health Insurance Service, and Seoul City Government. To evaluate the contents in health textbooks, we developed the 30 evaluation items. Results: Middle school textbooks had the most educational contents followed by high school and elementary school textbooks. Public education materials for the teenagers included more educational contents than those for children. The education material published by National Health Insurance Service had the highest score and the rest of the books earned under 15. And there were no core contents in medication education. Conclusions: Medication education through health textbooks should be strengthened to raise the level of medication awareness, to use medications safely, to prevent the drug abuse and misuse, and to establish the responsible judgment of medication information in the mass media. The current contents were found to be insufficient to meet these goals of medication education.
