This study was undertaken to investigate the dietary behavior and sugar intake of korean school children. The subject were 131 school lunch program children and 149 non school lunch program children lived in Soung Nam city. Sugar intake, food intake, dietary behavior and anthropometric measurement were studied through personal interview using 24-hour recall dietary data and records. Total daily energy and nutrient intake of children were higher than RDAs except for intake of Calcium and vitamin A. The nutrients intake of school lunch program children were significantly higher than that of non school lunch program children (p<0.05). The range of daily sugar intake was 10 g to 220 g and the total daily sugar intake was $63.0{\pm}37.4\;g$. Sugar intake of school lunch program children ($51.4{\pm}25.7\;g$) was significantly lower than non school lunch program children ($73.1{\pm}42.9\;g$) (p<0.0001). The more sugar intake increase more intake of Energy, Fat and Carbohydrate. The result of stepwise multiple regression analysis using the sugar intake of children as dependent variable, energy, vitamin $B_2$, protein, niacin, calcium school lunch program, education of fathers are significant explanatory variables, explaining 44.8% of variation. Result of this study suggest that school lunch program is desirable for good dietary behavior and decreation of sugar intake of school children.
This study investigated the quality of after-school programs focused on artistic-physical activities, children's emotional regulation and social competence. The subjects were 224 elementary school children (1st through 6th grades) and 41 teachers. The measures were questionnaire(after-school activities), Assessment Profile for Early Childhood Programs(school-age), the Emotional Regulation Scale. and the Social Competency Scale. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's a, frequency, percentile, mean, and t-test. The results indicated that emotional regulation and, social competence were significantly different according to the quality of after-school programs: Children in a higher group of curriculum quality and interaction with teacher had better emotional regulation than did children in a lower group. Children in a higher group of curriculum quality and scheduling had better social competence(leadership and competence) than did children in a lower group.
This study researches an obesity index and the realities of physical activity of elementary school children and provide basic data to instruct correct physical activity for low weight and obese children. The subject was 813 Elementary School Children of grade 4-6 in Kyungju and data were collected with a Physical Activity Questionnaire from YHS, USA. The collected data were analyzed with real number, percentage, average and standard deviation techniques. The range was by SPSS WIN. Both of them were in the normal range, between -38.3 and 77.7, between low weight and obesity. The results are as follows : 1. An Obesity index according to grade and sex: the average obesity index of 423 boys was $7.56{\pm}15.7$, for girls it was $2.56{\pm}14.3$. Both of them were in the normal range, between -38.3 and 77.7. There were low weight($-38.85{\pm}0.9$) students as well as obese, including extremely low weight children ($-38.85{\pm}0.9$) and extremely obese children. 2. On the whole, in the Frequency of the 25 item physical activities breakdown, children reported to watch TV 1. ($2.7{\pm}0.6$), or do homework($2.1{\pm}0.9$), more than three-fourths of the week, male children, however, played more football($2.0{\pm}0.9$). As male obese children do less MET5, MET8(highly active activity) than male normal children, it was also discovered that low weight children do more severe activity in MET8(high activity). In female cases, it was revealed that neither do highly intense activity. 3. In physical activity, male children received higher points than female children with $92.94{\pm}37.95$ to $74.46{\pm}29.50$. On the whole, male and female obese children had lower score than normal children. 4. As for attitude toward physical activity, male children($31.96{\pm}4.37$) had a positive attitude than female children ($29.57{\pm}3.89$), but obese male children had a negative attitude regarding activity viewed as normal. Therefore, in preventing obesity in elementary school children the treating of under-weight children should be included in the obesity program so as to prevent mal-nutrition or deficiency. It is needed to instruct obese children to carry out intensive work-outs at least 3 times a week through systematic programs. It is also needed that parents and teachers educate elementary school children from an early age with information on the frequency and intensity of work-outs to prevent obesity. It is also desirable that children be educated to carry out physical activities that address their specific needs. As a result of this study, obesity management must be started from elementary school and children should be instructed to act in high-intensity actirities when they spend leisure time.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the longitudinal relationship between main caregivers' life satisfaction and depression and self-esteem of school-aged children, and to provide plans for improving the lives of the school-aged children. For this purpose, we analyzed the three years'longitudinal panel data (2011-2013) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) including 2,342 first grade elementary school children employing the latent growth model using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 22.0. Analysis results were as follows. First, main caregivers'life satisfaction and school-aged children's depression increased as time passes and linear change model was selected. Second, the initial status of main caregivers'life satisfaction had effects on the initial status of their children's depression, but initial status and rates of change of life satisfaction did not have an influence on the rates of change of the depression. However, it was found that the main caregivers' life satisfaction had effects on the school-aged children's self-esteem and it worked as a mediator on the longitudinal relationship between the main caregivers'life satisfaction and the children's depression. School-aged children's self-esteem was a partial mediator on the initial status of their depression and full mediator on these rates of change. These findings suggests that programs improving school-aged children's self-esteem should be developed.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze how social supports, such as family, teachers, and friends, affect the school adjustment of children who were abused by their parents, and suggest the interventional solutions in order to improve the social support system and school adjustment. 692 children, aged 4 to 6 in primary schools in Busan, were chosen for the survey and all of them are currently under children's service. Among the respondents, 485 children (70.1%) have experienced abuse, and neglect was the most frequent abuse experienced among them. Neglected children were influenced by teachers, families and friends' support in terms of social support for school adjustments. However, the emotionally abused children were influenced by families, teachers and friends in terms of social support for school adjustments. In addition, children who experienced physical abuse have been influenced by families and teachers'support. Support from friends has no meaning for them. As a result, this paper suggests that an effective interventional solution will be necessary for the school adjustment of abused children. The effective interventional solutions are firstly that neglected children require a high level of attention from their teachers and teachers should encourage parents with parental education and counseling to be helpful for their children. Secondly, emotionally abused children require strong family support through parents'education for child development and caring support programs. Finally, physically abused children need caring programs which develop supportive relationship skills both with parents and teachers for their adjustment in school.
This study investigates the influence of policy-related factors on the intention to keep working among mothers with children under 12 years old, especially focusing on the differences between the mothers with preschool children and elementary school children. The study also considers the individual, family, job characteristics of mothers with children, in order to draw the specific impact of policy factors. Data was collected through e-mails from 500 working mothers living in urban area, and 489 interview data were finally utilized in analyses. The results of analyses show that the level of awareness on work-family balancing policy significantly influences on the intention to keep working among mothers with preschool children. On the contrary, there is no statistically significant policy-related factors influencing on the intention to keep working among mothers with elementary school children. Both studies and social polices excessively focused on the mothers with preschool children in terms of work-family balancing issues. Working mothers with elementary school children have not been spot-lighted as beneficiaries from social policy, even though elementary school children also should be cared by others after school. Effective social services assisting work-family balance among mothers with preschool children should be more developed.

The degrees of going without a meal and overeating showed high in breakfast and dinner respectively. Also most children responded that they eat more than usual when they are under stress. After having dinner, 52.8$\%$ of the children ate snacks. 64.7$\%$ of the children have unbalanced diets with the main reason being they don't like the peculiar smell that some foods have. Most children sleep 8 hours and go to school on foot, and 74.3$\%$ of the children enjoy indoor activities in their spare time. The regularity of exercise shows a low level of 39.1$\%$. In weight control, 51.0$\%$ of the children take no interest in it. Thirty percent of the children get their nutrition knowledge from school and the order of average mark of their nutrition knowledge is poor(40.5$\%$), fair(36.4$\%$), and excellent(23.0$\%$). Most children like sweet taste. It is prevalent that the children think instant food is not good for their health, and their preference for instant food is on a fair level. The most popular instant food is in the order of ddogbbokki, ice-cream, kimbap, fried chicken and pork cutlet.
This study examined the relationship between children's school adjustment and their emotion regulation. The subjects were 122 1st grade students selected from one elementary school in Incheon. Teachers rated each child using the Emotion Regulation Scale (Lee, 1997) and School Adjustment Scale (Chi & Jung, 2006). The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation analysis, and stepwise regressions. The children's emotion regulation and school adjustment were differed by sex of the child. The girls were assessed to be better adapted in emotion regulation and school adjustment than the boys. The children's emotion regulation was positively related to the children's school adjustment. In addition, the children's emotion regulation predicted how well they would adjust to school life.
The purposes of this study were (1) to explore the stability of social acceptance when childen transferred from kindergarten to elementary school, and (2) to identify factors that predict children's social acceptance in new school environments. Twenty two children of 'J' kindergarten who were transfering to 'S' elementary school were sampled at the end of their kindergarten year. They were administered social acceptance tests, a school readiness test, and the simplified version of the Preschool Behavior Questionnaire. A sample of 135 children including the 22 children of 'J' kindergarten were administered social acceptance tests in the middle of the first grade of elementary school and questionnaires on their children's social experiences were completed by their parents. Social acceptance scores were found to be stable from kindergarten to elementary school. School readiness test scores and distractibility ratings by preschool teachers were moderately correlated with post-transition social acceptance. Among the social experiences variables, duration and number of preschool experiences were significantly correlated with social acceptance in the first grade of elementary school. There were no significant differences of social acceptance score according to the type of kindergarten.
The main purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a weight control program for overweight elementary school children The results of our previous study in 1996 Identified overweight as one of several health problems among elementary school children in urban areas The research method utilized was a quasi experimental design using one group in a pre and post test comparison The sample consisted of 198 children from 3 elementary schools in Kyung-gi Province who were 20% over the ideal weight for their height Height and weight were measured and a BMI score was calculated at the beginning of the program and monthly thereafter. The program had three components: physical exercise, counseling of children, and health education of children, parents, and teachers. The program lasted from March, 1997 to November, 1997. The data were analyzed using an SAS PC statistical package. The results indicate that the overweight children in two elementary schools had statistically Significant changes in their BMI score after the program while those in one school id not. When the process notes were reviewed it was Identified that the school which showed little change averaged less physical exercise, and less parent and teacher participation in the program In conclusion, a school based weight control program is an effective way to manage and prevent obesity for overweight elementary school children It is suggested that a school wide exercise program may be better accepted by overweight children than a program specifically designed for overweight children only. One of the most important factors which determine the successful outcome of any health promotion project in school is the enthusiasm and cooperation of the principal and school health nurse.
