  • This study intends to evaluate visual preference and image for 10 types of forest sceneries which have own distinct characteristics without overlapping each other among 22 types of beautiful forest sceneries based on Korea National Parks. Z scale and paired comparison methods were used to analyze visual preference for forest scenery, and SD scale method was also adopted to assess visual image for forest scenery. Experiments were conducted with 3 different university students groups. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the evaluation results of Z scale (N=70) and paired comparison (N=64) methods show similar visual preference for different types of forest scenery. 'Scenery inside forests' and 'valley and rock' sceneries have the highest level of preference, and 'panorama of ridges', 'ridge of curious rock peaks', and 'waterfall and cliff' also have relatively higher preference level than others. However, 'community of dead trees' has the lowest preference in forest sceneries. Second, the factor analysis outputs of the image scores for beautiful forest scenery types by SD scale (N=66) show 3 factors of 'mysterious charm', 'colorful sense', and 'vividness/variety'. Examined the variables of forest scenery types for each factor, the image of 'mysterious charm' is based on the sceneries of mountain ridges, the image of 'colorful sense' is focused on the sceneries of color-expressed sense of the season, and the image of 'vividness/variety' is based on the sceneries of waterscape and curious rock peaks.

  • In order to develope a road landscape that is in harmony with landscaping purpose, degree of sight occupation by slopes at road sides was measured and physical elements composing the slope scenery were visually evaluated and the results are as follows : In analysis of sight occupation ratio by perspective method, gradient of the slopes influenced more on the sight occupation than height did and the driving lane occupied 2 to 3% more proportion of sight than the passing lane. When there is slope at one side of the road, difference in sight occupation between the lanes was increasing with deceased height and with increased gradient of the slopes. In visual analysis of the slope scenery, negative image was increasing with narrow road, increased height and gradient of the slopes. In visual analysis of the slope scenery, negative image was increasing with narrow road, increased height and gradient of the slopes. Particularly, the effect of gradient was critical on scenery. The effect of the slopes was negative at 60$^{\circ}$ or more but positive at 45$^{\circ}$or less gradient. This phenomenon was more conspicuous with wide 4 lane roads than wide 2 lane roads. Although direct comparison is difficult due to a great difference between Korea and U.S.A. in climate, land condition, road dimension, and public process of purchasing land, etc, it is desirable to treat road sides so that the scenery is in harmony with landscape around as well as emphasizing the regional characteristics, also giving friendly and comfortable image to drivers and nearby residents in addition to safety as can be seen in U.S.A.

  • Image always carry useful information, detecting a text from scene images is imperative. The proposed work's purpose is to recognize scene text image, example boarding image kept on highways. Scene text detection on highways boarding's plays a vital role in road safety measures. At initial stage applying preprocessing techniques to the image is to sharpen and improve the features exist in the image. Likely, morphological operator were applied on images to remove the close gaps exists between objects. Here we proposed a two phase algorithm for extracting and recognizing text from scene images. In phase I text from scenery image is extracted by applying various image preprocessing techniques like blurring, erosion, tophat followed by applying thresholding, morphological gradient and by fixing kernel sizes, then canny edge detector is applied to detect the text contained in the scene images. In phase II text from scenery image recognized using MSER (Maximally Stable Extremal Region) and OCR; Proposed work aimed to detect the text contained in the scenery images from popular dataset repositories SVT, ICDAR 2003, MSRA-TD 500; these images were captured at various illumination and angles. Proposed algorithm produces higher accuracy in minimal execution time compared with state-of-the-art methodologies.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm extracting character regions from scenery images. This algorithm works under a severe constraint: each pixel of a result image must be derived from only information of their neighbor pixels. This constraint is very important for a low cost device like a mobile camera. The proposed algorithm is represented by the local and parallel image processing. It has been tested for 100 scenery images. A result shows that the proposed algorithm can extract character regions at a rate of more than 90%. The result was obtained without learning any template images. the algorithm is very useful.

  • In this research, how the evaluation of the spacial image influenced by the environmental friendly elements included in the visual information, and how the selection of the sound changed depending on the characteristics of spatial image by the 40 subjects were carried out. Vast tracts of green land and the waterfront were highly preferred and impressive than the other spaces. The green music, signal with water sound and bird chirping sound were highly scored. In the frequency characteristics of the factors, the first factor was artificial sound(high at the low frequency band), the second was natural sound(uniform at all frequency band) and the third was water sound(high at the middle and high frequency band over 500Hz). This shows that the proposal of the sound which has the frequency characteristics fit to the spacial image should be selected for the soundscape of the target space.

  • In this study, the green zone patterns of sidewalks are classified 'one street-tree row + building,' 'one street-tree row + green zone,' 'two street-tree rows + building,' and 'two street-tree rows + green zone' and assessed their visual characteristic in order to provide desirable measures for scenery design. As a result of the analysis of visual images of sidewalk, the scenery in which street trees are planted in one row was generally assessed to be negative, while roads where green zones rather than buildings are adjacent were revealed to seem stable and pleasant. The scenery in which street trees are planted in two rows was assessed highly in an image of 'extensionality' indicating street circumstances, and especially the pattern 'two street-tree rows + green zone' was shown to be the most beautiful scenery. According to the results of factor analysis of sidewalks, three factors were identified : 'extensionality' showing sidewalk circumstances; 'peculiarity' including unique personality, and 'pliability' showing the organic flow of the scenery. The results of the analysis of visual preference of the scenery according to green zone patterns showed that the 'two street-tree rows + green zone' was measured to be highest. When buildings are adjacent to a sidewalk, two street-tree rows rather than one street-tree row were assessed to increase preference. As for the correlation between visual factors and preference analyzed through multiple regression analysis, all 'extensionality,' 'peculiarity,' and 'pliability' were revealed to show positive correlation for visual preference.

  • The purpose of this study is to research the influence of soundscape in the preference of landscape. Specifically, standards type of communication are applied to the landscape such as positive scenery and negative scenery. The spatial image was analyzed by the variables of Kaplan\`s information process model. The level of visual preferences was measured by a type of acoustic information and visual information in the landscape, and this data was analyzed by multiple regression. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; The value of landscape preference was maximum value in Type I and minimum value in Type II from all fluent of coherence, mystery, and legibility to, except complexity, and it was not different from preference. These results clearly show the influence of sounds effecting decision of landscape preference. It was different by the type of acoustic information and visual information in landscape. The results of ANOVA among types of acoustic information were differences of mean between positive sound, no sound and negative sound from coherence, mystery, and legibility to, except complexity. These variables may be the major factors which must be considered in planning and designing as the functional basis for quantitative analysis.

  • Throughout analyzing and construing the words, contexts, and expressive languages used for depicting the pine tree in the novel "Honbul" written by Choi, Myung-Hee the symbolism of the pine and folksy languages used for scenery can be condensed as written below: First, it is explicit that the scenery-words for illustrating the pine tree in "Honbul" are emerged through diverse means methods and expressions. Namely, the reference forms of the pine tree and the expressive means of utilizing words portrays the use of the pine are various and subdivided. Second, the scenery-words found in vocabularies and the contexts of "Honbul" imply various symbolic representation. They not only perform to describe inherent image and symbolism of the pine, but they work for reifying the image of "Honbul" in the narrative structure in "Honbul" as being intrinsic scenery-word. Third, the scenery-words used for expressing aesthetics emerge as synesthetic expressions through the linear beauty and the texture of the pine as well as through five-senses. Forth, on the basis of the inherent symbolism and the image of the pine, the landscape of the background described in "Honbul" deems as a symbolic backdrop. As with then narrative structure of the novel, the pine tree performs as a mediation of the heaven and the earth, god and man, as well as the sacred and the secular. Fifth, scenery-words used for depicting the pine tree are a symbol that represents the spirit and emotion of the character in the novel. Moreover, it is a tool for pursuing the personification of the nature, the deification of the object, and the cosmos of the space. It is also utilized as a device that definitize the ideational image applied to express the landscape of the background of the novel. As mentioned above, the expressions, vocabularies and textures about pine tree represented from "Honbul" are expected to be the beginning of understanding the landscape-images and landscape-languages of pine in not only the setting for this novels, Namwon but also the entire districts of Korea.

  • This research focused on the process in which 'the same scenery' is recognized and represented as 'a different landscape' to determine the symbols and meaning of the scenery and landscape included in real-scenery landscape paintings of the 18th-19th centuries. As a result of analyzing the visual points, the content and expressions of 25 real-scenery landscape paintings of Chong Seok Jeong(叢石亭), it can be seen that the transmission of a kind of semiotic landscape on the basis of a specific symbol was accomplished naturally through imitation and representation for the purpose of the expression of Chong Seok Jeong-like idealized scenery. This shows that the unique images of Chong Seok Jeong have long been passed down after taking root as a unique benchmark The meaningful symbol of 'a strange Saseonbong(四仙峰)', which is broken by the spray after rising high, and 'a pine forest' have both been transmitted as being in the manner of Chong Seok Jeong. This has been equipped with the stereo-type scene by being a collective symbolization as the psycho-scenes in memory element of Chong Seok Jeong. Through the pictures of both Gyeomjae(謙齋) and Danweon(檀園), the process by which a specific painter's pictures become acculturated is highly interesting. The scenery expressed in these pictures was clearly that of a landscape of which its particularly emotions and remembrances were repainted through the experience of several places and original sketches. This can be explained as the concept in which the image from 'a specific scenery' gained through actual experience, that is, a personal feeling, has been expressed. The picture that was expressed as a different figure even at the same visual point for the same scenery is the result that was redefined through the scenery subject's recognition. Also, the modification of the scenery object can be colorful through meditation and Sachu(邪推: guessing with wicked doubt). The scenery recognized newly through adoption, omission and emphasis, it is 'the specific scenery' in the heart and is a figure having been more similar to 'a landscape' if the objective life reproduction before being acculturated is a figure similar to the scenery. So, the concept looks like being very persuasive that 'the nature with objectivity captured sensuously' simply is the scenery, and that 'the subjective phenomenon having acquired the cultural nature by being introspected in the method of aesthetic nostalgia is a landscape'.
