  • The authors present a rare case of adult moyamoya disease in which a patient experienced rapid progression of cerebral infarction after intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). A healthy 39-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with sudden headache, a decreased level of consciousness and mild tetraparesis. Initial magnetic resonance imaging revealed small cerebral infarction and IVH. Although the patient underwent conservative therapy including hypervolemia, hemodilution, keeping moderate hypertension and administration of a free radical scavenger, she showed a fulminant clinical course of cerebral infarction. The authors discuss the possible pathophysiology and suggest the treatment for such cases.

  • Ag-modified BiOX (X=Cl, Br and I) nanoplates were synthesized by an ion-exchange reaction. We examined the fundamental properties by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron transmission microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction, UV-visible absorption, Fourier-transform infrared and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The adsorption and photocatalytic performances of the catalysts were tested with dyes under UV and visible light. A chemical scavenger method was employed to test the roles of active species (${\cdot}OH$, ${\cdot}O2-$ and h+) and understand photodegradation mechanism. Photoluminescence spectroscopy was used to examine ${\cdot}OH$ radical formation using terephthalic acid during photoirradiation.

  • Fifty-four Korean native and 28 foreign rice varieties harvested in 1998 and 1999 were examined for antioxidative activity that is measured to a chemiluminescence and superoxide radical intensity, by the flow injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) system and an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrophotometer, respectively. In the chemiluminescence measurement by FI-CL, radical scavenger activity did not differ significantly among rice varieties between origin types of rice varieties, and between storage periods. GinSun and Hongchoengdo, colored rice exhibited high electron scavenging effect by ESR. Therefore, these results indicate that the pigments of rice varieties may play important antioxidative roles and that it may be possible to breed rice varieties with higher antioxidative potentials.

  • In genus Angelica, three species have been used and cultivated for medical material in orient, A. gigas in korea, acutiloba in Japan and sinensis in China. The plant material of Angelica spp. is used for the treatment of women's disease as a hematic. The extracts from A. gigas and acutiloba were fractionated aqueous partitions. And study was performed to examine DPPH scavenging activities, BSA degradadion, anti-apoptosis and NO scavenging. DPPH radical scavenger activity was measured by DPPH method, it was shown dose-dependently effect. and BSA degradadion was shown same result. Treatment of cells with hydrogen peroxide, a reactive oxygen species was to indiced cell death and pretreatment with Angelica gigas and angelica acutiloba extract attenuated the occurrence of $H_2O_2$-induced cell death. In vitro nitric oxide (NO) scavenging effect on Angelica gigas and angelica acutiloba extracts. All extracts effectively reduced the generation of NO radicals in a dose-dependant manner.

  • Amyloid$\beta(A{\beta})$ has been reported have an effect on the induction of oxidative stress that involves the functional and structural abnormalities in Alzheimer's disease. As a role of a radical scavenger, a green tea treatment was found have some inhibitory effect on the neurodegenerative process. The aim of this study was to determine if green tea catechin (GTC) reduces in transgenic model. To test this, transgenic mice carrying neuronspecific enolase (NSE) controlled C-terminus (105) of APP (APP-C105) were created and treated them with a low ana high dose of GTC for 6 months. Herein, we conclude that transgenic mice expressing NSE/APP-C105 were successfully created and the GTC-treated group exhibited significant reduction in body weight. Thus, GTC might be a good prevention of obesity or good treatment for AD patient.

  • Assay-guided fractionation of the methanol extract of the leaves of Albizzia julibrissin has furnished quercitrin (1) and afzelin (2) as the scavengers of DPPH radical. Quercitrin and afzelin showed scavenging activity of DPPH free radical with the $IC_{50}$ values of 17.3 and 71.5 ${\mu}M$, respectively.

  • This study is carried out to determine the scavenging effect of resorcinol added into the urea formaldehyde resin on the formaldehyde release of plywood, as the preliminary study of using the phenolic substances. The method for formaldehyde determination used in this report is the improved chromotropic acid determination. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Resorcinol added into the urea formaldehyde adhesive acts as a good scavenger. 4 percent of resorcinol reduced the formaldehyde release to less than half content. 2. Adding resorcinol gave better glue shear strength than that of control, showing the peak of the shear strength, at 2 percent and decreased to the same strength as control along its content of 4 percent. 3. Moisture content of air dried plywood met the standard very well.

  • Inner nutshell of Castanea crenata has been used as an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle agent from the ancient time in east Asia. In order to develop new anti-aging and anti-wrinkle, ethanolic extract of inner nutshell of Castanea crenata was prepared and various biological activities were evaluated. Cor-285 possessed potent tree radical scavenging activity in vitro compared to gallic acid. Cor-285 showed the preventive effect against UV-induced cytotoxicity of fibroblast at concentration of 25-250mg/ml. When Cor-285 was evaluated for its anti-allergic activity, it effectively inhibited histamine release from mast cells induced by compound 48/80. The inhibitory activity was stronger than that of glycyrrhizinate. Cor-285 also showed on vivo inhibition against delayed hypersensitivity as well as croton-oil induced ear edema in mice when topically applied. These results strongly suggest that Cor-285 may reduce immunoregulatory/inflammatory skin trouble. From the attempts to isolate the scavenger, were isolated. In a clinical trial of twenty healthy volunteers with aged skin, 6 weeks application of Cor-285 decreased wrinkle about 26% and increased moisturizing 20% on the skin. All of these results indicate that Cor-285 may be an effective anti-aging and anti-wrinkle agent.

  • Methanolic aqueous extracts of 100 plants were screened for antioxidative activity using Fenton's reagen/ethyl linoeate system and free radical scavenging activity using DPPH free radical generating system. The results suggest that at least six plants including Eugenia caryophyllata, Alpinia offiicinarum, Rhus verniciflua, Curcuma longa, Rheum palmatvm and Evodia officinalis may be the potential sources of antioxidant, But only one plant, Cornus officinalis, may be the potential source of free radical scavenger from natural plants.

  • From the leaves of Brassica juncea, a new rare kaempferol 7-Ο-triglucoside isolated and characterized as kaempferol 7-Ο-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-(1longrightarrow3)-[$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-(1longrightarrow6)]-glucopyranoside (1) based on the spectroscopic evidences. This compound was found to be a scavenger of 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical.
