The classification of surface flaw types was performed on the basis of angular dependence of backscattered ultrasound. The copper line adhered on the surface, cower line filled in groove, pure groove and the normal edge were adopted as various surface flaw patterns of glass specimen. A backward longitudinal profile was formed probably by the longitudinal wane scattering at and near 1st critical angle. The wave trains at the peak angles of the backward radiation profiles showed different shapes according to the superposition ratio of scattered and leaky waves. The asymmetry of the backward radiation profile arose due to the scattering effect of flaw. The additive resonance effect of copper line appeared in the left side of the profile. The peak angles of both the longitudinal and radiation profiles were shifted toward small angle by the scattering effect.
Interventional radiology is performed under real-time fluoroscopy, and patients are exposed to a wide range of exposures for a long period of time depending on the examination and procedure. However, studies on radiation protection for patients during an intervention are insufficient. This study aims to evaluate the doses exposed during the intervention and the applicability of 3D printing materials. The organ dose for each intervention site was evaluated using a monte carlo simulatio. Also, the dose reduction effect of the critical organs was calculated when using a shielding device using 3D printing materials. As a result, the organ dose distribution for each intervention site showed a lower dose distribution for organs located far from the x-ray tube. It was analyzed that the influence of scattered rays was higher in the superficial organs of the back of the human body where x-rays were incident. The dose reduction effect on the critical organ using the 3D printing shield showed the highest testis among the gonads, and in the case of other organs, the dose reduction effect gradually decreased in the order of the eye, thyroid, breast, and ovary. Accordingly, it is judged that the 3D printed shield will be sufficiently usable as a shielding device for the radiation protection of critical organs.

Background: For a verification of newly-developed neutron absorbers, one of guidelines on the qualification and acceptance of neutron absorbers is the neutron attenuation test. However, this approach can cause a problem for the qualifications that it cannot distinguish how the neutron attenuates from materials. Materials and Methods: In this study, an estimation method of neutron absorption performances for materials is proposed to detect both direct penetration and back-scattering neutrons. For the verification of the proposed method, MCNP simulations with the experimental system designed in this study were pursued using the polyethylene, iron, normal glass and the vitrified form. Results and Discussion: The results show that it can easily test neutron absorption ability using single absorber model. Also, from simulation results of single absorber and double absorbers model, it is verified that the proposed method can evaluate not only the direct thermal neutrons passing through materials, but also the scattered neutrons reflected to the materials. Therefore, the neutron absorption performances can be accurately estimated using the proposed method comparing with the conventional neutron attenuation test. Conclusion: It is expected that the proposed method can contribute to increase the reliability of the performance of neutron absorbers.
Three-dimension paraffin compensator was designed to construct the tissue equivalent compensator for irregular body contours and obiliques beam incidence. The ratio of compensator thickness to tissue deficit was depended on field size, depth and air gap because the scattered dose loss. The ratio of compensator-tissue was optimized 0.79, 0.73, 0.61 and 0.56 in 6MV x-rays as function of field size $4{\times}4$, $10{\times}10$, $20{\times}20$ and $30{\times}30cm^2$ respectively. in our study. Using this tissue equivalent compensator, it can be got 2% difference of dose at same mid-plane in phantom study.
Recently, As people's interest in the health of teeth is increased in the medical field changed into aging society, the number of times for the radiological diagnosis is increased. It can be said that the radiation exposure dose of Korean population is increased. It is also growing concern about radiation exposure. Therefore, the basic data for the dental panoramic X-ray system, its investigation and measuring the radiation dose is needed. In this study, we used ALOKA PDM-117 dosimeter and estimated a two-dimensional dose distribution of the dental panoramic X-ray system (VATEC Pax-400). Dose evaluation about the distribution is confirmed from the point of radiation exposure of a patient. Dose distribution of the dental panoramic X-ray system irradiated chin and the facial region to high dose as well as the parts of teeth. It was founded that the eye lens which are sensitive to radiation are exposed to unnecessary radiation, considering the effect of scattered radiation. The results of this study will be used more accurate dose assessment in a variety of object size and location of measuring dose.
Radiation causes radiation hazards in the human body. In Korea, a case of radiation necrosis occurred in 2014. In this study, the scatter and shielding efficiency according to lead shielding were classified into epidermis and dermis for 0.511 MeV used in nuclear medicine. In this study, experiments were conducted using the slab phantom that represents calibration and the dose of human trunk. Experimental results showed that the shielding rate of 0.25 mmPb was 180% in the epidermis and 96% in the dermis. Shielding at 0.5mmPb showed shielding rates of 158%in the epidermis and 82% in the dermis. As a result of measuring the absorbed dose by subdividing the thickness of the dermis into 0.5 mm intervals, when the shielding was carried out at 0.25 mmPb, the dose appeared to be about 120% at 0.5 mm of the dermis surface, and the dose was decreased at the subsequent depth. Shielding at 0.5 mmPb, the dose appeared to be about 101% at the surface 0.5 mm, and the dose was measured to decrease at the subsequent depth. This result suggests that when lead aprons are actually used, the scattering rays would be sufficiently removed due to the spaces generated by the clothes and air, Therefore, the scattered ray generated from lead will not reach the human body. The ICRU defines the epidermis (0.07), in which the radiation-induced damage of the skin occurs, as the dose equivalent. If the radiation dose of the dermis is considered in addition, it will be helpful for the evaluation of the prognosis for radiation hazard of the skin.
Compton imaging is often recognized as a potentially more valuable 3-D technique in nuclear medicine than conventional emission tomography. Due to inherent computational limitations, however, it has been of a difficult problem to reconstruct images with good accuracy. In this work we show that the row-action maximum likelihood algorithm (RAMLA), which have proven useful for conventional tomographic reconstruction, can also be applied to the problem of 3-D reconstruction of cone-beam projections from Compton scattered data. The major advantage of RAMLA is that it converges to a true maximum likelihood solution at an order of magnitude faster than the standard expectation maximiation (EM) algorithm. For our simulations, we first model a Compton camera system consisting of the three pairs of scatterer and absorber detectors placed at x-, y- and z-axes, and generate conical projection data using a software phantom. We then compare the quantitative performance of RAMLA and EM reconstructions in terms of the percentage error. The net conclusion based on our experimental results is that the RAMLA applied to Compton camera reconstruction significantly outperforms the EM algorithm in convergence rate; while computational costs of one iteration of RAMLA and EM are about the same, one iteration of RAMLA performs as well as 128 iterations of EM.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the developed air mattress for reducing the deterioration of image quality due to the scattered radiation generated on the computed tomography equipment table. 5 cm and 10 cm thick air mattresses were developed and the image quality was measured by scanning the AAPM phantom according to thickness and thickness. Statistical significance was confirmed by One Way Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) Compared with the AAPM phantom scanned in the standard method, the image with the air mattress did not show any difference, but when the air mattress was not applied, the CT number and uniformity were low and the noise was high, and the spatial resolution Respectively. The developed air mattress has no harmful effect on the diagnostic image, it is very effective in improving the image quality and can increase the CT image quality by simply applying Air Mattress to existing equipment without using the technology applied to the latest and high-cost equipment.

The commercially available neutron survey meter, the REM500, which uses a tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) and the self-constructed TEPC were used to determine the microdosimetric quantities of several neutron calibration fields at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). Microdosimetric spectra, absorbed dose, dose equivalent as well as quality factor were derived and compared with several neutron fields which were produced by using the shadow objects to make neutron scattered and being used as a kind of realistic neutron calibration fields at KAERI. The response of REM500 as a function of mean energy was evaluated with these neutron fields using the counts measured and the predetermined reference value. The response of the self-made TEPC and the REM500 was compared using one of the neutron calibration filelds of a $^{252}Cf$ source. The reference quantities of scattered neutron calibration fields were determined using a Bonner Sphere (BS). The value of frequency-mean lineal energy, dose-mean lineal energy and quality factor of two $^{252}Cf$ sources (unmoderated and $D_2O$ moderated) were determined to check the differences in the reference neutron fields between KAERI and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL, USA) and the results were in good agreement within 1%. It means that there is no big difference in dosimetric quantifies of neutron calibration fields of two laboratories.

A calculation is presented of air-scattered gamma rays using the modified single-scattering approximation. The air-scattered tissue dose rates are calculated for a general purpose taking into account (a) the buildup and exponential attenuation, (b) the energy spectrum at the position of question and (c) the geometrical scattering volume in three dimensions. These calculations have been further modified to render them applicable to a typical field irradiation facility which is surrounded by a shield wall and in which the source is fitted with a beam collimating device. The results of the calculation include the energy spectra, angular distribution and tissue does rates at source-receiver separation distances of from 35m to 300m. The comparison shows that the present method developed may be generally adequate for the gamma-ray air-scattering problems in field irradiation facilities if energy and angular distribution at the shield are unimportant.
