  • This study carried out finite element vibration analysis of composite plate structures for construction using multi-scale approaches, which is based on the higher-order theory. The finite element (FE) models for composite structures using multi-scale approaches described in this paper is attractive not only because it shows excellent accuracy in analysis but also it shows the effect of the material combination. The FE model is used for studying free vibrations of laminated composite plates for various fiber-volume fractions. In particular, new results reported in this paper are focused on the significant effects of the fiber-volume fraction for various parameters, such as fiber angles, layup sequences, and length-thickness ratios. It may be concluded from this study that the combination effect of fiber and matrix, largely governing the dynamic characteristics of composite structures, should not be neglected and thus the optimal combination could be used to design such civil structures for better dynamic performance.

  • The study investigates the free vibration of a nano-scale sandwich beam by an extended high order approach, which has not been reported in the existing literature. First-order shear deformation theory for steel skins and so-called high-order sandwich panel theory for the core are applied. Next, the modified couple stress theory is used for both skins and cores. The Hamilton principle is utilized for deriving equations and corresponding boundary conditions. First, in the study the three-mode shapes natural frequencies for various material parameters are investigated. Also, obtained results are evaluated for two types of stiff and soft cores and isotropic, homogenous steel skins. In the research since the governing equations and also the boundary conditions are nonhomogeneous, therefore some closed-form solutions are not applicable. So, to obtain natural frequencies, the boundary conditions are converted to initial conditions called the shooting method as the numerical one. This method is one of the most robust approaches to solve complex equations and boundary conditions. Moreover, three types of simply supported on both sides of the beam (S-S), simply on one side and clamp supported on the other one (S-C) and clamped supported on both sides (C-C) are scrutinized. The parametric study is followed to evaluate the effect of nano-size scale, geometrical configurations for skins, core and material property change for cores as well. Results show that natural frequencies increase by an increase in skins thickness and core Young modulus and a decrease in beam length, core thickness as well. Furthermore, differences between obtained frequencies for soft and stiff cores increase in higher mode shapes; while, the more differences are evaluated for the stiff one.

  • In this paper, we consider a user centric clustering in order to guarantee the performance of the users in cell free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network. In the user centric clustering scheme, by using large scale fading coefficients of the connected access points (APs), each user decides own cluster with the APs having the higher the large scale fading coefficients than threshold value compared to the highest large scale fading coefficient. In the determined user centric clusters, the APs design the beamformers and power allocations in the distributed manner and the APs cooperatively transmit data to users by using beamformers and power allocations. In the simulation results, we verify the performance of user centric clustering in terms of the spectral efficiency and we also find the optimal threshold value in the given configuration.

  • To test the equality of survival distributions in the presence of arbitrary right censorship, the choice of weights which are functions of the number of individuals at risk at the time of each death is very important in increasing the power of the test. In this paper a weight by probit scale is derived and the efficiencies relative to the other weight's are also investigated.

  • Suspension culture in serum-free medium is important for the efficient large-scale culture of anchorage-dependent cells that are utilized to produce therapeutic recombinant protein(e.g., insulin, antibody, vaccine) and virus vector for therapeutic gene transfer. We developed a novel method for the suspension culture of anchorage-dependent animal cells in serum-free medium using biodegradable polymer nanospheres in this study. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) polymer nanospheres (433nm in average diameter) were used to the culture of human embryonic kidney 293 cells in serum-free medium in stirred suspension bioreactors. The use of PLGA nanospheres promoted the aggregate formation and cell growth (3.8-fold versus 1.8-fold growth), compared to culture without nanospheres. Adaptation of the anchorage-dependent cells to suspension culture or serum-free medium is time-consuming and costly. In contrast, the culture method developed in our study does not require the adaptation process. This method may be useful for the large-scale suspension culture of various types of anchorage-dependent animal cells in serum-free medium.

  • Backgrounds: Pain management is one of the most important factors affecting the success of pediatric dentistry. Therefore, new needle- and pain-free local anesthesia techniques have been developed in parallel with technological advancements. The purpose of this study is to compare the pain perception and dental anxiety levels associated with a needle-free injection system (Comfort-inTM) and the classic needle method during treatment-required infiltration anesthesia in children. Methods: This randomized controlled crossover split-mouth clinical study included 94 children who required dental treatment with local anesthesia using a dental needle or needle-free injection system for the bilateral primary molars. The Wong-Baker Scale (WBS) was used to measure pain perception at different times, and the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale (MCDAS) was used to measure the anxiety level of the child. A statistical software package was used to process the data. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: There was no significant difference between the needle-free injection system and dental needle method during the induction stage for filling and pulpotomy (P > 0.05). "Pain on postoperative 1st day" was similar in both types of anesthesia (P = 0.750). Conclusions: The needle-free injection system was as effective as the dental needle method. The Comfort-inTM system was an acceptable alternative for patients during the postoperative period. Understanding how pain management may be provided during local anesthesia administration and a child's fear and anxiety regarding the dentist may lead to better dental compliance.

  • Developed by Paulhus and Carey(2011), the Free will and Determinism Plus Scale (FAD-Plus) is a widely-used tool for measuring the individuals' lay beliefs in free will and three closely related constructs: scientific determinism, fatalistic determinism, and unpredictability. Since no attempt has been made to validate Korean version of FAD-Plus, it is necessary to assess the psychometric properties as well as reliability analysis of Korean version of FAD-Plus. Total 202 people were surveyed and the subjective well-being and personality traits were measured to see how free will and related constructs relate to other psychological constructs. The study found that six of the total 27 items were deleted, which proved to be a reliable and validate questionnaire. The theoretical implications of the results and future directions for research are discussed.

  • According to Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal, there have been 14,100 maritime accidents from 2017 to 2021. Among those accidents, ship collision accidents have been up to 1,275 cases. But in the accidents relating to small ships like a fishing vessel, analyzing the causes of the accidents would depend on statements of the persons related because there is often no navigational data. But those statements can be incorrect and give rise to disagreements between them so that it causes conflicts with each other during the trial. So a replay system of ship collision accident (RESCA) has been developed in order to reproduce the ship collision accident by using AIS, V-PASS or radar data. But the reproduced trajectory of ship collision accident is needed to be verified because it can be unreasonable physically. So a method to verify the reproduced trajectory and collect the physical data on ship collision accident is newly designed by using free running test. In the RESCA, the accident is reproduced using the navigational data from the trajectory for a ship and measured from free running model test for the other ship at the same time. Through free running test, the behavior of the model ship is transformed from model scale into real scale. In order to check into the accuracy of the new method, free running model tests by using RESCA are carried out on the actual ship collision accidents.

  • Since containment building is the major shielding structure to ensure safety of nuclear power plant, the structural behavior and ultimate pressure capacity of containments must be studied in depth. This paper addresses ambiguous issue of determining free-field position for liner failure by suggesting an expanded free-field region and comparing internal pressure capacities obtained by test data, conservative assumption and suggested free-field region. For this purpose, a practical approach to determine the free-field position for the evaluation of liner tearing is carried out. The maximum principal strain histories versus internal pressure capacities among different free-field positions at various azimuths and elevations are compared with those at the equipment hatch as a conservative assumption. The comparison shows that there are considerable differences in the internal pressure capacity at liner failure within the expanded free-field region compared to the vicinity of the equipment hatch. Additionally, this study proposes an approximate correlation with conservative factors by considering the expanded free-field ranges and material characteristics to determine realistic failure criteria for liner. The applicability of the proposed correlation is demonstrated by comparing the internal pressure capacities of full-scale containment buildings following liner failure criteria according to RG 1.216 and an approximate correlation.

  • The effect of free stream turbulence on the flow characteristics behind a circular cylinder is investigated in the present experimental study. The various free stream turbulent intensities are generated by different combinations of cylinder locations and grid shapes. Split film sensor with constant temperature anemometer is used to measure the local instantaneous velocity components. Experimental results demonstrate the large scale coherent structures are rapidly distorted and the Strouhal number is decreased with increasing free stream turbulent intensity.
