  • We discuss various aspects of anisotropic gravity in (d+D)-dimensional spacetime, where D dimensions are treated as extra dimensions. It is based on the foliation preserving diffeomorphism invariance and anisotropic conformal invariance. The anisotropy is embodied by introducing a factor z which discriminates the scaling degree of the extra D dimensions against the d-dimensional base spacetime and Weyl scalar field which mediates the anisotropic scaling symmetry. There is no intrinsic scale but a physical scale M* emerges as a consequence of spontaneous conformal symmetry breaking. We discuss interesting lower dimensional gravity theories obtained from our model. In a (d, D) = (2, 2) case, we suggest a UV-complete unitary quantum gravity which might become Einstein gravity in IR. In a certain (2,1) case, we obtain CGHS model. Some vacuum solutions are also obtained and we discuss an issue of 'size separation' between the base spacetime and the extra dimensions. The size separation means large distinction between the scales (e.g. cosmological constant) appearing in the base spacetime and the extra dimensions respectively.

  • This study aimed to test the factor structure of the measure of student participation in distance education. The study population consisted of all teachers in public education and faculty members in higher education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by applying it to a sample of bachelor's and graduate students at the college of Education at umm al-Qura University. The (ESE) was applied to a random sample representing the study population consisting of (216) respondents. The results of the study showed that the scale consists of three main factors, with showed a high degree of construct validity through fit indices of the confirmatory factor analysis. The results have shown a gradual consistency of the measure's invariance that reaches the high level of the Measurement Invariance across the gender and study groups variables.

  • The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) measures the extent to which individuals feel, accept, and respond to their own bodies in a positive manner. Given the research need to explore positive body image and its associations with various sociocultural factors and related consequences among individuals with various cultural backgrounds, several studies have established the psychometric properties and factor structures of the BAS-2 in different languages and samples with different characteristics. The current study investigated the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of a Korean version of the BAS-2 in an older Korean adult population (599 older Korean adults with the average age of 70 years). Data were collected using both online and offline (paper-based) survey questionnaires. The results of exploratory factor analyses and confirmatory factor analysis evidenced the unidimensional factor structure and measurement invariance of the Korean BAS-2 among older Korean men and women, after dropping item 1. Scalar invariance was supported across gender, and men and women did not significantly differ in observed mean scores of the Korean BAS-2. The results also supported good convergent validity and criterion validity. Incremental validity was demonstrated by predicting self-esteem over and above measures of age, BMI, subjective financial and health status, body esteem, and ageism. High internal reliability and test-retest reliability over a 2-week period were confirmed. Overall, the results of this study support the reliable use of a Korean BAS-2 to measure positive body image among older Koreans after excluding item 1.

  • This study analyzes bifurcation characteristics of the Seolmacheon experimental catchment by extracting the shape variation of channel network due to variable scale of source basin or threshold area. As the area of source basin decreases, a bifurcation process of channel network occurs within the basin of interest, resulting in the elongation of channel network (increase of total channel length) as well as the expansion of channel network (increase of the source number). In the former case, the elongation of channel reaches overwhelms the generation of sources, whereas, in the latter case, the drainage path network tends to fulfill the inner space of the basin of interest reflecting the opposite trend. Therefore, scale invariance of natural channel network could be expressed to be a balanced geomorphologic feature between the elongation of channel network and the expansion of channel network due to decrease of source basin scale. The bifurcation structure of the Seolmacheon experimental catchment can be characterized by the coexistence of the elongation and scale invariance of channel network, and thus a further study is required to find out which factor is more crucial to rainfall transformation into runoff.

  • The purpose of this study is testing measurement invariance of the school vitality scale across the level of school. For this study, 3,156 elementary school teachers and 4,411 secondary school teachers were surveyed. As a result, school vitality scale was found to have the same factor structure in the structure regression model. Second, the factor load of the measurement model was found to be the same. Third, the structural path coefficients were the same. Fourth, structural covariance was found to be the same. Fifth, the structural residuals were the same. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that we can use school vitality scale both elementary school and secondary school. This study will contribute to diagnosing school vitality levels and finding ways to improve school management.

  • This paper presents a novel feature detection algorithm called depth-hybrid speeded-up robust features (DH-SURF) augmented by depth information in the speeded-up robust features (SURF) algorithm. In the keypoint detection part of classical SURF, the standard deviation of the Gaussian kernel is varied for its scale-invariance property, resulting in increased computational complexity. We propose a keypoint detection method with less variation of the standard deviation by using depth data from a red-green-blue depth (RGB-D) sensor. Our approach maintains a scale-invariance property while reducing computation time. An RGB-D simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system uses a feature extraction method and depth data concurrently; thus, the system is well-suited for showing the performance of the DH-SURF method. DH-SURF was implemented on a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU), respectively, and was validated through the real-time RGB-D SLAM.

  • Although many content-based image retrieval systems using shape feature have tried to cover rotation-, position- and scale-invariance between images, there have been problems to cover three kinds of variance at the same time. In this paper, we introduce new approach to extract shape feature from image using MBR(Minimum Bounding Rectangle). The proposed method scans image for extracting MBR information and, based on MBR information, compute contour information that consists of 16 points. The extracted information is converted to specific values by normalization and rotation. The proposed method can cover three kinds of invariance at the same time. We implemented our method and carried out experiments. We constructed R*_tree indexing structure, perform k-nearest neighbor search from query image, and demonstrate the capability and usefulness of our method.
