  • The new structure consisting of continuous compound spiral hoop reinforced concrete (CCSHRC)column and steel concrete composite (SCC) beam has both the advantages of steel structures and concrete structures. Two types of beam-to-column connections applied in this structural system are presented in this paper. The connection details are as follows: the main bars in beam concrete pass through the core zone for both types of connections. For connecting bar connection, the steel I-beam webs are connected by bolts to a steel plate passing through the joint while the top and bottom flanges of the beams are connected by four straight and two X-shaped bars. For bolted end-plate connection, the steel I-beam webs are connected by stiffened extended end-plates and eight long shank bolts passing through the core zone. In order to study the seismic behaviour and failure mechanisms of the connections, quasi-static tests were conducted on both types of full-scale connection subassemblies and core zone specimens. The load-drift hysteresis loops show a plateau for the connecting bar connection while they are excellent plump for bolted end-plate connection. The shear capacity formulas of both types of connections are presented and the values calculated by the formula agree well with the test results.

  • To select agronomically useful transgenic plants, a large number of transgenic events are initially produced, gene transfer confirmed, and advanced to obtain homozygous lines for testing in field trials. Direct in planta assays for identifying the transgene carriers in the segregating progeny are based on the activity of selectable marker gene and are easy, simple and inexpensive. For this purpose, expression of bar gene as measured by tolerance to damage by glufosinate ammonium, the active ingredient in the herbicide BASTA, was investigated. Dose damage curves were generated by leaf paint tests with BASTA on four genotypes of sorghum. Transgenic plants were characterized in terms of sensitivity to the concentration of glufosinate ammonium. In transgenics, symptoms of BASTA swab tests at different growth stages and PCR analysis for cry1B were carried out and correlated. Germination tests could not be employed for large scale evaluation of transgenic progeny because of mortality of tolerant seedlings after transplantation to soil. Based on the above findings, a simple, inexpensive, time-saving, two-step scheme for effective evaluation of transgenics and their progeny containing bar gene as selection marker using BASTA swab tests is described.

  • A merger or interaction between galaxy clusters is one of the most violent events in the universe. Thus, an interacting cluster is an optimum laboratory to understand how galaxy properties are influenced by a drastic change of the large-scale environment. Here, we present the observational evidence that bars in disk galaxies can form by cluster-cluster interaction and the bar formation is associated with star-formation enhancement. We investigated 105 galaxy clusters at 0.015

  • We have conducted a V, I, J, and H surface photometry of a barred galaxy NGC 4314 to analyze the morphology and luminosity distribution of the galaxy. By applying a semi two-dimensional profile decomposition method, we derived the luminosity fractions and the scale lengths of the three distinct components, bulge, disk, and bar: $L_b {\approx}0.35,\;L_d{\approx}0.35,\;L_{bar}{\approx}0.30,\;r_e{\approx}22",\;r_o {\approx} 50"$, and a $\approx$ 60". The bulge of NGC 4314 seems to be triaxial due to the isophotal twists but its luminosity distribution is well approximated by the $r^{1/4}$-law.

  • Nanopositioning technologies play an important role in the progress of electronics, optics, bio-engineering and various nano-scale technologies. As a result, various practical nanopositioning methods have been successfully introduced. Flexure mechanism is a valuable method in nanopositioning because of smooth and friction-free motion and the infinitesimal movement near to sub-nm. In this study a modularized nanopositioner based on parallelogram four-bar linkage structure with right-circular flexure hinge was developed. The positioning performance of a single axis nanopositioner and a XY nanopositioner which was extended from single axis one were demonstrated using control experiments. Consequently, it was shown that the developed single axis nanopositioner possessed high performance and could be extended to various multi-axis nanopositioners.

  • Ultra-precision positioning plays a crucial role in emerging technologies such as electronics, bioengineering, optics, and various nanofabrication technologies. As a result, various nanopositioning methods have been presented. In particular, nanopositioning using a flexure mechanism and piezo-electric actuator is one of the most valuable methods because of its friction-free motion and subnanometer-scale motion resolution. In this study, a rotational nanoactuator based on a right-circular flexure mechanism and piezo-electric actuator was developed through a consideration of the kinematics and structural deformation. An experimental setup was constructed to verify the performance expectation. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the developed system had a maximum rotational angle of about 0.01 rad, as well as sufficient linearity with respect to the input voltage.

  • We present VR CCD photometry and long-slit spectroscopy of a late type spiral galaxy NGC 7678. The grey scale images and isophotal maps illustrate the presence of a weak bar from which spiral arms emerge. There are many HII regions along the spiral arms, but bright giant HII regions are more concentrated in the massive southern arm. The bright compact nucleus of NGC 7678 is bluer than bulge and bar. The spectral features of the nucleus and HII regoins are very similar but the nuclear spectra shows higher $[NII]{\lambda}6583/H_\alpha$ than those of the HII regions. The nucleus of NGC 7678 seems to be intermediate type between HII region nulcei and LINERs by the ratio of $[NII]{\lambda}6583/H_\alpha$, but it is more likely to be HII region-like nucleus if we consider the $[NII]{\lambda}6716,6731/H_\alpha$ together. The star formation rate is estimated to be about $0.2 M_\bigodot\;yr^{-1}$ based on the $H_\alpha$ flux.

  • The central regions of barred-spiral galaxies contain interesting gaseous structures such as dust lanes located at the leading side of the bar and nuclear rings that are sites of intense star formation. Our previous studies showed how gas structures form under the influence of a non-axisymmetric bar potential and temporal/spatial behavior of the star formation in nuclear rings. However, previous works were limited to 2-dimensional infinitesimally-thin, unmagnetized and isothermal disks. To study effects of cooling/heating, vertical motions of gas structures and magnetic field, we use Mesh-Free magneto-hydrodynamic simulation code GIZMO. We find that temporal variations of the star formation rates in the nuclear ring in the three-dimensional model are overall similar those in the previous two-dimensional results, although the former shows more violent small-scale fluctuations near the early primary peak. We will present our recent results about evolution of gaseous structures and star formation rate compare with results of previous studies.

  • In recent years, the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures has become a serious problem in civil engineering fields. This situation is mainly due to corrosion of steel reinforcing bars embedded in concrete. Recently, there has been a greatly increased demand for the use of FRP (fiber reinforced plastic) in civil engineering field due to their superior mechanical and physical properties. This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with FRP Box, FRP Plate, and FRP Re-bar. In tlIe study, mechanical properties of FRP Box, FRP Plate, GFRP Re-bar, and CFRP Grid have been investigated. Full scale one-way deck slab was tested under four point lateral load (equivalent to actual wheel load of DB-24 including impact). Load-deflection and load-strain data were collected through LVDT's and strain gages attached to the specimen.

  • The results of a large-scale study to determine the effects of epoxy coating on the bond strength between deformed reinforcement and concrete are descrebed. Tests include beam-end specimens containing No. 5(16mm), No. 6 (19mm), No. 8(25mm), No. 11(32mm) bars with average coating thicknesses ranging from 3 to 17 mils(0.08-0.43mm). Three deformation patterns are evaluated. Specimens with covers of 1, 2, and 3 bar deameters are studied. Both top-cast and bottom-cast bars are tested. Epoxy coatings are found to significantly reduce bond strength. The severity of that reduction is a function of deformation pattern, bar size, and coating thickness. Design recommendations based on these observations differ from the modifications to the 1989 ACI Building Code.
