  • A suction-saturation control technique based on flow pump system was developed to investigate hydraulic properties in unsaturated soils. The flow pump system is designed based on the principle of the axis-translation technique and triaxial equipment, and gives the suction-time and suction-saturation curves, the primary relationship needed for interpreting the response of unsaturated soils and link between theory and the material properties in unsaturated soil mechanics. Using the suction-saturation control technique, suction-time relationship and soil-water retention curve (SWRC) during hydraulic hysteresis were investigated with different net confining pressures and porosities. Three types of soils-two sands and a silt were used in this paper. This paper showed the effect of the hysteresis on the SWRC due to different net confining pressures and porosities. This means that a careful decision must be made as to which condition is to be modeled, since the delicate difference of the conditions in physical modeling can cause the different experimental output.

  • This paper deals with a nonlinear controller based on saturation functions with variable parameters for set-point regulation and trajectory tracking control of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). In many cases, saturation functions with constant parameters are used to limit the input signals generated by a classical PD (Proportional-Derivative) controller to avoid damaging the actuators; however this abrupt bounded harms the performance of the controller. We, therefore, propose to replace the conventional saturation function, with constant parameters, by a saturation function with variable parameters to limit the signals of a PD controller, which is the base of the nonlinear PD with gravitational/buoyancy compensation and the nonlinear PD + controllers that we propose in this paper. Consequently, the mathematical model is obtained, considering the featuring operation of the underwater vehicle LIRMIA 2, to do the stability analysis of the closed-loop system with the proposed nonlinear controllers using the Lyapunov arguments. The experimental results show the performance of an AUV (LIRMIA 2) for the depth control problems in the case of set-point regulation and trajectory tracking control.

  • This paper proposes a control method of the Segway with unknown control coefficient and input saturation. To design a simple controller for the Segway with the model uncertainty, the prescribed performance function is used. Furthermore, an auxiliary variable is introduced to deal with unknown time-varying control coefficient and input saturation problem. Due to the auxiliary variable, function approximators are not used in this paper although all model uncertainties are unknown. Thus, the controller can be simple. From the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proved that all errors of the proposed control system remain within the prescribed performance bounds. Finally, the simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

  • In realistic control systems, the nonlinear salutation attributes of the control actuator due to physical limitations should be taken into account. This nonlinear saturation of actuators may cause not only deterioration of the control performance but also a large overshoot during start-up and shut-down. As the overshoot increases, the system may become oscillatory unstable. In this paper, the supervisor implementation which guarantees good performance lot saturation operation and prevents reset wind-up is presented. Moreover, the sufficient conditions of the stability for saturated systems using supervisory control with a dynamic controller are provided in the discrete-time domain. A numerical example is illustrated to depict the efficiency of supervisory control for a typical saturated production-distribution system controlled by a discrete-time dynamic controller and to validate basic results by simulation.

  • In this paper, a saturated LQR controller considering control input's saturation for stable linear time-invariant systems with single control input is studied. Based on Lyapunov stability, two linear matrix inequality sufficient existence conditions for this controller are presented. Through numerical simulations for 2DOF vibrating system, it is confirmed that the saturated LQR controller is stable in the presence of control input's saturation and it is also shown that this controller can be applied to vibrating system practically.

  • The accuracy of all the schemes that belong to vector controlled induction machine drives is strongly affected by parameter variations. The aim of this paper is to examine iron losses and magnetic saturation effect in sensorless vector control of induction machines. At first, an approach to induction machine modelling and vector control scheme, which account for both iron loss and saturation, is presented. Then, a model reference adaptive system (MRAS) based speed estimator is developed. The speed estimation is modified in such a way that iron losses and the variation in the saturation level are compensated. Thus by substituting an artificial neural network flux estimator into the MRAS speed estimator. Experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive image enhancement algorithm. The proposed algorithm is classified with the MIE technique for intensity enhancement of input image and MSE techniques for saturation enhancement. The MIE technique is proposed to control the gamut mapping problem and a sudden change in image-brightness while Luminance signal is processing, The MSE techniques are proposed to control de-saturation or over-saturation while chrominance signal is processing. The proposed algorithm is focused on processing preference color for human vision in order to generate better image quality than the algorithms focused on processing uniformly to whole images, This algorithm can be applied to a monitor, TV and other display devices for high quality image.

  • This paper suggests the modified delay compensation scheme under the control input saturation in order to improve the control performance. This scheme uses the real estimated control input instead of the direct command control input. The simulation results show that this scheme can improve the current control performance under the delay time and the limited control input.

  • A novel approach based on a nonlinear compensator is proposed to prevent 'windup', which is caused by the saturation of the actuator and the integration action of the controller. The anti-windup compensator is located between the conventional linear controller, designed neglecting the saturation, and the actuator. It was proven based on the describing function method that, if the closed loop control systems are stable assuming no saturation, then there exist a range of compensator gain which prevents any limit-cycle and hence, guarantees the system stability. The computer simulation results show that the compensator proposed in the manuscript can eliminate unstable limit cycle and improve the transient response.

  • This paper presents a control augmentation system (CAS) based on the dynamic model inversion (DMI) architecture for a highly maneuverable aircraft. In the application of DMI not treating actuator dynamics, significant instabilities arise due to limitations on the aircraft inputs, such as actuator time delay based on dynamics and actuator displacement limit. Actuator input saturation usually occurs during high angles of attack maneuvering in low dynamic pressure conditions. The pseudo-control hedging (PCH) algorithm is applied to prevent or delay the instability of the CAS due to a slow actuator or occurrence of actuator saturation. The performance of the proposed CAS with PCH architecture is demonstrated through a nonlinear flight simulation.
