Earth observation satellites are being used in various field and are being developed in many countries due to their high utility and marketability. Korea is developing various Earth observation satellites according to National Space Development Plan. Among them, the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite(KOMPSAT) series is the most representative low-orbit satellite. So far, a total of five KOMPSAT have been launched to meet the national image demand and have been used in various fields, including national institutions. This special issue introduces research related to data processing, analysis, and utilization using various image data from the KOMPSAT series. Meanwhile, for the uninterrupted utilization of the subsequent KOMPSAT image data, data processing and utilization research suitable for high-resolution images must be continued, and related research contents will be continuously shared through a special issue.
The aim of this study is to detection of changed vegetation area of Saemangeum tidal flat with comparison of topography and surface sediments during the dyke construction. Sedimentary facies of four seasons of 2001 from inside Saemangeum tidal flat revealed homogeneous layers in the upper part, however near sea side tidal flat were detecting with carried out rapid sediment deposition during the dyke construction using satellite image spatial analysis. The sedimentation types inside Saemangeum tidal flat were classified with vegetation types, which were well matched with the sedimentation pattern revealed by change in vegetation patterns.
Surface reflectance, as a product of the absolute atmospheric correction process of low-orbit satellite imagery, is the basic data required for accurate vegetation analysis. The Commission on Earth Observation Satellite (CEOS) has conducted research and guidance to produce analysis-ready data (ARD) on surface reflectance products for immediate use by users. However, this trend is still in the early stages of research dealing with ARD for high-resolution multispectral images such as KOMPSAT-3A and CAS-500, as it targets medium- to low-resolution satellite images. This study first summarizes the types of distribution of ARD data according to existing cases. The link between Open Data Cube (ODC), the cloud-based satellite image application platforms, and ARD data was also explained. As a result, we present practical ARD deployment steps for high-resolution satellite images and several types of application models in the conceptual level for high-resolution satellite images deployed in ODC and cloud environments. In addition, data pricing policies, accuracy quality issue, platform applicability, cloud environment issues, and international cooperation regarding the proposed implementation and application model were discussed. International organizations related to Earth observation satellites, such as Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), are continuing to develop system technologies and standards for the spread of ARD and ODC, and these achievements are expanding to the private sector. Therefore, a satellite-holder country looking for worldwide markets for satellite images must develop a strategy to respond to this international trend.
Images from satellites will have 1 to 3 meter ground resolution and will be very useful for analyzing current status of earth surface. An image processing system named GeoWatch with more intelligent image processing algorithms has been designed and implemented to support the detailed analysis of the land surface using high-resolution satellite imagery. The GeoWatch is a valuable tool for satellite image processing such as digitizing, geometric correction using ground control points, interactive enhancement, various transforms, arithmetic operations, calculating vegetation indices. It can be used for investigating various facts such as the change detection, land cover classification, capacity estimation of the industrial complex, urban information extraction, etc. using more intelligent analysis method with a variety of visual techniques. The strong points of this system are flexible algorithm-save-method for efficient handling of large size images (e.g. full scenes), automatic menu generation and powerful visual programming environment. Most of the existing image processing systems use general graphic user interfaces. In this paper we adopted visual program language for remotely sensed image processing for its powerful programmability and ease of use. This system is an integrated raster/vector analysis system and equipped with many useful functions such as vector overlay, flight simulation, 3D display, and object modeling techniques, etc. In addition to the modules for image and digital signal processing, the system provides many other utilities such as a toolbox and an interactive image editor. This paper also presents several cases of image analysis methods with AI (Artificial Intelligent) technique and design concept for visual programming environment.

Extraction of man-made objects from high resolution satellite images has been studied by many researchers. In order to reconstruct accurate 3D building structures most of previous approaches assumed 3D information obtained by stereo analysis. For this, they need the process of sensor modeling, etc. We argue that a single image itself contains many clues of 3D information. The algorithm we propose projects virtual shadow on the image. When the shadow matches against the actual shadow, the height of a building can be determined. If the height of a building is determined, the algorithm draws vertical lines of sides of the building onto the building in the image. Then the roof boundary moves along vertical lines and the footprint of the building is extracted. The algorithm proposed can use the shadow cast onto the ground surface and onto facades of another building. This study compared the building heights determined by the algorithm proposed and those calculated by stereo analysis. As the results of verification, root mean square errors of building heights were about 1.5m.
It is necessary to understand the amount of snowfall and area of snow cover of Mt. Halla to ensure the safety of mountaineers and to protect the ecosystem of Mt. Halla against climate change. However, there are not enough related studies and observation posts for monitoring snow load. Therefore, to supplement the insufficient data, this study proposes an analysis of snow load and snow cover using normalized-difference snow index. Using the images obtained from the Sentinel2 satellite, the normalized-difference snow index image of Mt. Halla could be acquired. This was examined together with the meteorological data obtained from the existing observatory to analyze the change in snow cover for the years 2020 and 2021. The normalized-difference snow index images showed a smaller snow pixel number in 2021 than that in 2020. This study concluded that 2021 may have been warmer than 2020. In the future, it will be necessary to continuously monitor the amount of snow and the snow-covered area of Mt. Halla using the normalized-difference snow index image analysis method.
Since the solar radiation is the main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system, it will be necessary to understand and evaluate the solar radiation data. The works presented here is the analysis of solar radiation data for East-North Asia areas. The data utilized in the analysis consist of the global radiation on horizontal surface, measured at 2 different stations during 3 years for the period from 2002 to 2004 and estimated using satellite at 27 different stations over the China and Mongolia. Also the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations all of the South Korea and estimated using satellite at 12 different stations over the North Korea from 1982 to 2005. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is 3.57 $MJ/m^2$. We conclude, based on the analysis, that East-North Asia areas have sufficient solar energy resources for the photovoltaic power generation system.
We developed a software for simulations and analyses of the Image Navigation and Registration (INR) system, and compares the characteristics of Image Motion Compensation (IMC) algorithms for the INR system. According to the orbit errors and attitude errors, the capabilities of the image distortions are analyzed. The distortions of images can be compensated by GOES IMC algorithm and Modified IMC (MIMC) algorithm. The capabilities of each IMC algorithm are confirmed based on compensated images. The MIMC yields better results than GOES IMC although both the algorithms well compensate distorted images. The results of this research can be used as valuable asset to design of INR system for the Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS).
Monitoring water surface has become one of the most prominent areas of research in addressing environmental challenges.Accurate and automated detection of watersurface in remote sensing imagesis crucial for disaster prevention, urban planning, and water resource management, particularly for a country where water plays a vital role in human life. However, achieving precise detection poses challenges. Previous studies have explored different approaches, such as analyzing water indexes, like normalized difference water index (NDWI) derived from satellite imagery's visible or infrared bands and using k-means clustering analysis to identify land cover patterns and segment regions based on similar attributes. Nonetheless, challenges persist, notably distinguishing between waterspectralsignatures and cloud shadow or terrain shadow. In thisstudy, our objective is to enhance the precision of water surface detection by constructing a comprehensive water database (DB) using existing digital and land cover maps. This database serves as an initial assumption for automated water index analysis. We utilized 1:5,000 and 1:25,000 digital maps of Korea to extract water surface, specifically rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Additionally, the 1:50,000 and 1:5,000 land cover maps of Korea aided in the extraction process. Our research demonstrates the effectiveness of utilizing a water DB product as our first approach for efficient water surface extraction from satellite images, complemented by our second and third approachesinvolving NDWI analysis and k-means analysis. The image segmentation and binary mask methods were employed for image analysis during the water extraction process. To evaluate the accuracy of our approach, we conducted two assessments using reference and ground truth data that we made during this research. Visual interpretation involved comparing our results with the global surface water (GSW) mask 60 m resolution, revealing significant improvements in quality and resolution. Additionally, accuracy assessment measures, including an overall accuracy of 90% and kappa values exceeding 0.8, further support the efficacy of our methodology. In conclusion, thisstudy'sresults demonstrate enhanced extraction quality and resolution. Through comprehensive assessment, our approach proves effective in achieving high accuracy in delineating watersurfaces from satellite images.

Recently the high-resolution satellite images are helpfully using the land cover, status data for the natural resources or environment management. The effective satellite analysis process for these satellite images that require high investment can be increase the effectiveness has become increasingly important. In this Study, the statistical value of the training data is calculated and analyzed during the preprocessing. Also, that is explained about the maximum likelihood classification of traditional classification method, artificial neural network (ANN) classification method and Support Vector Machines(SVM) classification method and then the IKONOS high-resolution satellite imagery was produced the land cover map using each classification method. Each result data had to analyze the accuracy through the error matrix. The results of this study prove that SVM classification method can be good alternative of the total accuracy of about 86% than other classification method.
