  • Recently GPS has been playing an increasingly important role in geodesy and positioning, for example, car navigation system, surveying, ITS(intelligent transport systems), LBS(Location Based Service) and so on. For telematics application, reception conditions of GPS signal are important. In some situation, such as in areas between buildings, metropolitan areas or areas with large skyscraper complexes, there are situations whereby the satellite signal is seriously restricted by various obstacles. Before the signal arrives at the receiver, it may be blocked, reflected, delayed, attenuated or scattered by terrestrial obstacles such as buildings. In this paper, we present satellite imagery data for telematics application. Therefore, for propriety of this studies, we made a GPS satellite visibility experiments in Bun-Dang on same time. This paper describes an approach to calculate building level using 0.6m, 1m, 6.6m resampling aerial polo imagery in stead of the satellite imagery and make a comparative study of accuracy. This paper tests the simulation of GPS signal using the building level.

  • Currently, Korea is developing a Cheollian follow-on satellite program, named as Geostationary Korea Multipurpose Satellite 2 (GK-2), which consists of two satellites. One satellite (GK-2A) is dedicated to the meterological mission, while the second one (GK-2B) hosts two main payloads for the ocean and environmental application. As GK-2A is dedicated to the meteorological mission unlike Cheollian, there have been discussions on the possibility of transferring the responsibilities of the GK-2A program to the Korea Meteorological Administration. To help resolve any consumptive disputes or to find an efficient way for the GK-2A program, the events happened after the successful launch of the first meteorological satellite TIROS-1 in the U.S. in April 1960 are investigated. With the successful demonstration of usefulness of TIROS-1 for the meteorological applications, organizations such as the Weather Bureau and the Department of Defense, responsible for the real time application of the TIROS 1 data, strongly requested for an operational meteorological satellite program which resulted in the plan for the National Operational Meteorological Satellite System (NOMSS). The plan was strongly supported by Kennedy Adminstration and was put forwarded for the new program under the responsibility of Weather Bureau to the Congress. However, the responsible Committee on Science and Aeronautics sided with NASA and requested major revision of the responsibility. Due to many unfavorable conditions, Weather Bureau accepted the requests and signed with NASA on the agreement for the operational meteorological satellite. However, with the delay of Nimbus satellite which is planned to be used for the prototype of the operational satellite and changes of the unfavorable situations, the Weather Bureau could draw a second agreement with NASA. The new agreement reflected most propositions requested by the Weather Bureau for the NOMSS plan. Until now the second agreement is regarded as the basic principles for the operational meteorological satellite program in the U.S. This study investigates the backgrounds and processes of the second agreement and its implications for the GK-2 program.

  • The purpose of this study is to efficiently improve orthorectification of KOMPSAT images. As the development of domestic and abroad earth observation satellites accelerates, the number and amounts of satellite images acquired are rapidly increasing. Accordingly, various studies are being conducted to improve orthorectification for the acquired image more quickly and efficiently. This study focused on enhancing processing efficiency through algorithm improvement, except for improving hardware computing capabilities such as GPU. Accordingly, the algorithm was improved with the LUT-based RFM method, and compared and analyzed in terms of accuracy and time-efficiency that vary depending on offset settings.

  • Satellite communication is getting more important in the coming 21st century because of its wide areas sevice capability, ease of access, and fast channel establishment. As such, satellite communication networks will be the basis of the global communication system in cooperation with the ground ATM networks. In this paper, we consider an efficient transmission methodology of ATM cells over the satellite communication channel. We first analyze possible bottlenecks and performance deterioration factors in the case, and then propose an enhanced cell trasmission mechanism. In order to use satellite channel for ATM cell transmission, the application of complicated channel coding is inevitable. However, the forwared error control such as convolutional encoding brings forth burst errors, which calls for the application of some kind of interleaving mechanism to randomize the burst errors at the receiver. Another aspect which should b econsidered in satellite communication system is the inherent transmission delay, which can be very considered in satellite communication system is te inherent transmission delay, which can be very critical to the delay-sensitive ATM traffic. Therefore, we propose that the processing delay at the block interleaving stage should be controlled propose a variable-size block interleaving mechanism which utilizes the predicted transmission delay for each traffic in the queues of the transmitter. According to the computer simulation, the proposed mechanism could improve the overall performance by drastically reducing the ATM cell drop rate owing to the excessive transmission delay.

  • Recently, in Korea, recognizing the importance of satellite imagery and a national project, the development of satellite providing satellite imagery information of 1m high resolution has been carried out. As the application of satellite. imagery information is expanded to the national land, the environment and geographical information, etc, the necessity of integrated management of satellite imagery information increases. Unfortunately, in case of Korea, currently, the results that institutes for satellite imagery processing produce with satellite imagery have been individually managed. Integrated Management of Satellite Imagery Information project which is being promoted by ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute) in Korea will provide the solutions for the above mentioned problems. In this research work, we designed standard metadata for integrated management of satellite imagery information in consideration of international and national standard.

  • The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is commonly used to characterize the spatial quality of imaging systems. This work is the attempt to measure the MTF at Nyquist frequency of the satellite imaging system what has 1m spatial resolution for KOMPSAT-2 image using the edge function. Artificial tarp targets are used in this study. A type of this tarp edge consists of two adjacent uniform bright and dark sides commonly used to test the performance of an optical system in edge function. The results from this work demonstrate the potential applicability of this method to estimate the response characteristics for KOMPSAT-2 that is scheduled to be launched.

  • Most of the public and private users who use national satellite information such as the KOMPSAT series mainly use Electro-Optical and Infrared (EO/IR) satellite images, and the utilization of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images is relatively insufficient. As KOMPSAT-5 currently in operation, KOMPSAT-6 and micro SAR satellite constellation systems are scheduled to be launched in the future, the demand for utilization of SAR satellite information is increasing in various fields. Accordingly, it is necessary to possess core technology for SAR utilization that can support the utilization of SAR satellite information for users. Due to the all-weather properties of SAR system, change detection technology is a key application technology. However, until now, the development of technology that automatic change detection and cueing using SAR images is insufficient. Through this study, the requirements of automatic change detection and cueing function using multi-temporal KOMPSAT-5 SAR satellite images were derived and a prototype program was developed. This prototype program aims to secure independent SAR utilization technology and promote the utilization of domestic SAR satellite information by practitioners in public sector organizations in Korea.

  • Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications has become a crucial technology for next-generation communication networks owing to its hyperconnectivity capabilities. We examine the progress and application areas of LEO satellite communication services. The LEO satellite communication industry has transitioned from being predominantly driven by governments and institutions to being led by the private sector, following the trajectory of the NewSpace movement. Leading corporations such as SpaceX Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb are deploying LEO satellite networks to offer internet services, while Telesat is preparing to establish its satellite communication network. LEO satellite communications is expected to have a major impact on various sectors of society, particularly for upcoming sixth-generation services. Therefore, the South Korean government must promptly formulate policy support strategies aimed at invigorating the LEO satellite communication industry. This can be achieved through initiatives such as bolstering research and development and extending corporate assistance.

  • A satellite that has an all-composite structure, STSAT-3(science and technology satellite), was initially developed in Korea. Partially use of advanced composites in space applications such as solar panel is well developed, however the application of an all-composite satellite bus has never been achieved in Korea. This study emphasizes the application of composite technology to the design and fabrication of an all-composite spacecraft bus for small-class satellite STSAT-3. Moreover its structure design concept is totally different from the one that was used in the previous satellites developed in Korea.
