We observed and treated a 19 year-old female who had atopic dermatitis. Even though she had been treated with western medicine, she still complained of severe itching, erythema, lichenification, scaling, dryness, oozing and insomnia especially on her face and neck. We treated her with Sasang Constitutional Therapies(Kupoong-san, Teumchoui-tang, Kalkunsungki-tang), apcupuncture, herbal irrigation and moisture emulsion. Having been treated for 24 days in hospital admitted, her symptoms were reduced and changed from severe to mild grade in SCORAD(SCORing Atopic Dermatitis)

Objective The case report showed that sudden hearing loss and tinnitus after trigeminal schwannoma surgery were improved with Yeoldahansotang-gamibang. Method The patient was diagnosed with Taeeumin interior heat (Ganyeol) disease based on the original symptoms of Taeeumin. He was treated with herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment. Puretone audiometry (PTA), speech audiometry, tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) and the original symptoms were investigated before and after the treatment. Results Right side PTA score was significantly reduced, speech audiometry was improved in speech reception threshold (SRT), word recognition score (WRS) and most comfortable level (MCL) and THI score decreased from 40 to 0, which showed normalizing hearing function. And the patient revealed improvements in sleeping, digestion, stooling, perspiration and facial sensation after treatment. Conclusion This study suggests that Yeoldahansotang-gamibang is effective on sudden hearing loss and tinnitus after surgery by correcting the imbalanced energy of Taeeumin.

Objectives: This study was to propose a standardized method of retention enema by extracting elements associated with published experimental methods of retention enema. Methods: 1) Literature search (1) Data sources: Retrieval was made, using 'Enema' or 'Retention Enema' as search words in Medline, Cochrane library, KISS, RISS, and KDSL DB. (2) Study selection: Two authors excluded irrelevant papers and chose qualified abstracts from the rest of the papers. The chosen studies were reviewed fully by the authors so that they could screen the significant papers based on the exclusion criteria. (3) Data extraction: Data on the total number of subjects, the target disease, the animal species, the type, quality, length, and diameter of catheter, the insertion length of catheter, the sample, the sample volume, the process of retention enema and the number of retention enemas performed were extracted from the selected studies. 2) Performing preliminary experiments about the elements associated with experimental methods of retention enema. Results & Conclusions: The standardized experimental method is as follows: animal: 280-320g SD rat 1) inserting a rectal tube of 8 Fr that measures 8 cm into the animal's anus, 2) injecting herbal medicines at the volume of 6ml and 3) holding them for 10 minutes.

1. Objectives: In SCM, a personal Sasang constitution must be determined accurately before any Sasang treatment. The purpose of this study is to develop an objective method for classification of Sasang constitution. 2. Methods: We collected samples from 5 centers where SCM is practiced, and applied two-stage decision tree analysis on these samples. We recruited samples from 5 centers. The collected data were from subjects whose response to herbal medicine was confirmed according to Sasang constitution. 3. Results: The two-stage decision tree model shows higher classification power than a simple decision tree model. This study also suggests that gender must be considered in the first stage to improve the accuracy of classification. 4. Conclusions: We identified important factors for classifying Sasang constitutions through two-stage decision tree analysis. The two-stage decision tree model shows higher classification power than a simple decision tree model.

Objective The purpose of this study is to study the effects of Taeeumjowi-tang extract granule on metabolic syndrome with obesity in Taeeumin. Methods We studied 206 subjects who diagnosed metabolic syndrome with obesity and classified Taeeumin by a Sasang constitution analysis tool. The subjects were administered by Taeeumjowi-tang for 12 weeks. We investigated the changes of body mass index, abdominal circumference, the number of risk factors for metabolic syndrome, lipid, fasting blood sugar, Hemoglobin A1c, free fatty acid, insulin, and blood pressure. Results Body mass index and abdominal circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly reduced after 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks of administration compared to before administration. Triglyceride significantly decreased after 8 weeks and 12 weeks of dosing compared to before taking. Low density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting blood sugar were significantly increased after 8 weeks of administration compared to before administration. High density lipoprotein cholessterol was decreased significantly after 4 weeks of administration compared to before administration. The number of risk factors for metabolic syndrome, Hemoglobin A1c increased significantly after 12 weeks of administration compared to screening. Conclusions In this study we knew that Taeeumjowi-tang extract granule is very efficient in metabolic syndrome, especially in obesity and hypertension, triglyceride, insulin resistance.

1. Objectives Pneumothorax is defined as the presence of air or gas in the pleural cavity causing chest pain and shortness of breath. Primary spontaneous pneumothoraces (PSPs) occur in people without underlying lung disease or trauma to the thorax. We have tried researching effect of herbal medicine Doksampalmulkeunja-rang(獨蔘八物君子湯) in PSPs. 2. Methods This patient with PSPs which size was more than 30% of Rt. lung, who had been experienced the recurrences of PSPs in Lt. lung for three times, was treated by Doksampalmulkeunja-tang(獨蔘八物君子湯) diagnosed by Soeumin. 3. Results Doksampalmulkeunja-tang(獨蔘八物君子湯) was effective against the chest discomfort and shortness of breath. The chest test was improved. 4. Conclusions The treatment with herb-medicine may have effect on PSPs symptom of Soeumin by raising the stagnant yang qi. Further Sasang medical study on PSPs is needed for recurrence prevention.

Objective : We tried to seek for conflicts of views among the contents in Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Traditional Medicine based on Huangdi's Internal Classic, and to study about the Range of Lee Je-Ma's Works, therefore finding out the limit of Sasang Constitutional Medicine in view of learning contents and practice of theory. Method : Through the texts of Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine, such subjects will be investigated as Lee Je-Ma(李濟馬)'s comments on Huangdi's Internal Classic and views on the herbal medicine, the relations among five viscera(五臟), taeguk(太極), four-constitution(四象), etc. Result : Lee Je-Ma's Sasang Constitutional Medicine does not goes well in harmony with the traditional physiology which is based on the functional five zang system developed in Huangdi's Internal Classic, and is hard to understand because of its four division method rooted in confucius academy. Conclusion : Lee Je-Ma's view of medicine is one of the practical and valuable parts of Korean Medicine, however, its extreme four-division structure theory could be difficult to be accepted as its whole form. This is because he studied himself as a confucian, so that his work might rather be confucian than medical. When he fully devoted himself to Sasang Constitutional Medicine, he already took his age much.

1. Objectives: Three herbal formulas (Yuldahanso-tang, Chungsimyonja-tang, and Taeeumjowi-tang) for Taeeumin were applied to investigate the immunological activities on antigen (Ag)-specific or Ag-non-specific immune responses in murine macrophage cell line (RAW 264.7) and ovalbumin (OVA)-immunized mice. 2. Methods: This study was carried out in nitric oxide (NO) synthesis in RAW 264.7 cells and cellular proliferation in mouse splenocytes according to three herbal formulas. C57BL/6 mice were immunized intraperitonially with OVA/aluminium ($100\;{\mu}g/200\;{\mu}g$/mouse) on day 1, 8, and 15. Three herbal formulas were administrated to mice orally for 3 weeks from day 1. On day 22, OVA-, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-, and concanavalin A (Con A)-stimulated splenocyte proliferation and antibodies (OVA-specific antibodies of the IgG, IgG1, and total IgM classes) in plasma were measured. 3. Results: Yuldahanso-tang and Chungsimyonja-tang increased NO synthesis in RAW 264.7 cells. Three herbal formulas significantly enhanced cellular proliferation by LPS and Con A in splenocytes from OVA-immunized mice (p<.001). Three herbal formulas for Taeeumin also significantly enhanced plasma OVA-specific IgG, IgG1, and total IgM levels compared with the OVA/Alum group. 4. Conclusion: These results suggested that three herbal formulas for Taeeumin could be used as stimulator of immune response.

Objectives Genome-wide association studies(GWAS) is a useful method to identify genetic associations for various phenotypes. The purpose of this study was to develop predictive models for Sasang constitution types using genetic factors. Methods The genotypes of the 1,999 subjects was performed using Axiom Precision Medicine Research Array (PMRA) by Life Technologies. All participants were prescribed Sasang Constitution-specific herbal remedies for the treatment, and showed improvement of original symptoms as confirmed by Korean medicine doctor. The genotypes were imputed by using the IMPUTE program. Association analysis was conducted using a logistic regression model to discover Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP), adjusting for age, sex, and BMI. Results & Conclusions We developed models to predict Korean medicine constitution types using identified genectic factors and sex, age, BMI using Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Neural Network (NN). Each maximum Area Under the Curve (AUC) of Teaeum, Soeum, Soyang is 0.894, 0.868, 0.767, respectively. Each AUC of the models increased by 6~17% more than that of models except for genetic factors. By developing the predictive models, we confirmed usefulness of genetic factors related with types. It demonstrates a mechanism for more accurate prediction through genetic factors related with type.

1. Objectives pneumonia is the infection of the lungs. The typical symptoms of is cough, sputum, fever, chest pain, infiltration of chest X-ray. We have tried researching effect of herbal medicine Soeumin Doksampalmulkeunja-tang(獨蔘八物君子湯). 2. Methods This patient with serious fever, sputum which were caused by aspiration pneumonia was treated by Doksampalmulkeunja-tang(獨蔘八物君子湯), who was diagnosed as Soeumin 3. Results Doksampalmulkeunja-tang(獨蔘八物君子湯) is effective against the fever. sputum symptom of Soeumin. The chest PA test were improved. 4. Conclusions The consitutional treatment with herb-medicine may have effect on fever symptom of Soeumin. Soeumin Exterior febrile Disease must be treated by raising the stagnant yang qi. Further study on Soeumin Exterior febrile Disease is needed.
