Some Trace Metals and their Ratios in Aloe (Aloe vera L.), Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. var. tuberculatus Gabaj.) and Sponge-gourd (Luffa cylindrica L.) in Korea

  • Aloe (Aloe vera L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. var. tuberculatus Gabaj.) and sponge.gourd (Luffa cylindrica L.) are well utilized in Asian countries as traditional medicines and cosmetics, or foods. And we carried out an experiment to see if there are some specific ratios among trace metals on the plants. Though the metal concentrations varied significantly depending on the sampling periods, aloe gel is high in iron (Fe) and calcium (Ca). Cucumber fruit juice is also high in iron (Fe) and potassium (K). Sponge.gourd sap contains a high amount of zinc (Zn) and calcium (Ca). The uses of the previous 3 plant parts are considered to have some relations to their different ratios and of their trace metals.

Chemical Composition, Nutritional Value, and Saponin Content in the Spring Sap of Acer mono (고로쇠나무 수액(樹液)의 화학적(化學的) 성분(成分), 영양가치(營養價置)와 사포닌 함유(含有) 여부(與否)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • This study was conducted to analyze the chemical composition, nutritional contents, and saponin in the xylem sap of Acer mono Max. From Feb 25 to Mar 4, 1994, spring sap was collected by making holes with 1.7cm diameter on the trunk of trees in Mt. Baekwoon and Mt. Jiri. Sugars were quantified by HPIC, amino acids by amino acid analyzer, saponins by TLC, HPLC, and $^1H$ & $^{13}C$ NMR. Major component of the sap was sucrose at a concentration range of 0.68 to 2.01%. Following minor components were found: glucose at 0.03-0.11%, and fructose at 0.01-0.03% as sugars, lipid at 0.03%, threonine at 0.152%, lysine at 0.038%, arginine at 0.068% as amino acids, ash at 0.1%, Ca at 175ppm, Fe at 2ppm, P at 19ppm, K at 16ppm, Na at 31ppm as minerals, vitamin $B_1$ at 0.6ppm, vit. $B_2$ at 0.1ppm, and vit. C at 19ppm. A trace of phenolic compounds was found by TLC, while saponin commonly reported in high-quality ginseng roots was not found in maple sap. It is concluded that sap of Acer mono contains a good variety of natural compounds such as sugars, amino acids, Ca, Fe, and vitamins to serve as an excellent source of very natural and health-promoting drink.

Physicochemical Characteristics and Nutritional Components of Goroshoe (Acer mono Max.) Sap with Collection Periods (고로쇠 수액의 유출시기별 이화학적 특성과 영양성분)

  • This study evaluated the physicochemical characteristics and nutritional components of Goroshoe (Ace rmono Max.) sap related with collection periods. The changes of browning index, turbidity, pH, total acidity, organic acids, free sugar, crude protein, crude ash, and minerals were investigated. Browning index and turbidity were slightly increased, while pH and total acidity were not changed as collection periods increased. Citric acid decreased slightly from 0.081 to 0.045 mg/mL at middle collection periods. Malic acid also decreased from 0.494 to 0.416 mg/mL at middle collection periods but then afterward increased to 0.674 mg/mL as collection periods increased. Sucrose decreased from 1.759 to 1.000%, while fructose increased from 0.023 to 0.044% as collection periods increased. Crude protein increased remarkably from 0.80 to 17.49 mg% as collection periods increased. Crude ash decreased slightly from 0.04 to 0.03% at middle collection periods, and then increased afterward to 0.06% as collection periods increased. Potassium increased from 13.43 to 49.75 mg/L as collection periods increased. These results indicate that the useful components of Goroshoe sap increased with increasing collection periods, but turbidity could be reduced.

Taxonomical Study by the Major Fatty Acid of Genus Rhus(anacardiaceae) in Korean (주요 지방산에 의한 한국산 옻나무屬의 분류학적 연구)

  • Through total fatty acid analysis by the Gas chromatography, 17 different fatty acids were identified from the sap extracted from bark of Korean Rhus(Anacardiaceae), six species. Linoleic acid(C18 :2) and oleic acid(C18 : 1) were identified as major fatty acids for the species investigated, but except in R. chinensis.In the fatty acid composition for the species, one or two specific-fatty acid was detected, and its could be utilized as a useful taxonomic character.The result of cluster analysis by the 22 reliable characters in the fatty acid composition suggested first group was R.trichocarpa and R. succedanea, the second group, R.verniciflua, R.ambgua and R. sylvestris, but R.chinensis was a greatly independent species. The possible chemotaxonomic application of the fatty acid composition of bark in the genus Rhus was discussed.

Improvement of Lacquer Collection Method by CEPA Application in Lactree(Rhus verniciflua Stokes) (CEPA 처리(處理)에 의한 옻나무 칠액(漆液) 채취법(採取法) 개량(改良)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • In order to improve 'Salso' method (conventional tapping method) which was very inefficient in the aspects of collection time and labor, this study was carried out to investigate the effect of the application date and the distance from treatment point in the lactree(Rhus verniciflua) treated with 10% CEPA and to decide the possibility of application of the technique in the field. Bark thickness was significantly increased to the part 40cm above and below the treatment point, but urushiol content was increased to the part 20cm above and 10cm below the zone treated with 10% CEPA. The urushiol content of the bark was highest at 5cm above the treated zone and decreased in the order of 10, 20, and 40cm. And the urushiol contents of the bark of the upper part were higher than that of the low part. The effects of CEPA on bark thickness were similar to urushiol contents. Urushiol production of lactree is highly dependent on climatic conditions and particularly on the precipitation, and duration of sunshine. Ten percent of CEPA-lanolin pastes which was treated on June 16 affected bark anatomy and urushiol contents, while the treatment on August 24 did not affect. In the Rhus verniciflua treated with 10% CEPA, the urushiol contents was initially increased from 7 days after treatment, continued for the 4 weeks, and then slight decrease occurred at 5 weeks after the treatment. We measured a total sap yield by Salso method in lactree treated with 10% CEPA. By applying 10% CEPA, the sap yield was increased 3-4 times compared to that of untreated trees in the first tapping. But the relative ratio was gradually decreased from the second tapping to sixth, and after seventh tapping, the untreated trees secreted more sap than the treated trees.   • Candidatus Carsonella ruddii is an endosymbiont that resides in specialized cells within the body cavity of plant sap-feeding insects called psyllids. The establishment of symbiotic associations is considered one of the key factors for the evolutionary success of psyllids, as it may have helped them adapt to imbalanced food resources like plant sap. Although C. ruddii is defined as a psyllid primary symbiont, the genes for some essential amino acid pathways are absent. Complete genome sequences of several C. ruddii strains have been published. However, in-depth intra-species comparison of C. ruddii strains has not yet been done. This study therefore aimed to perform a comparative genome analysis of six C. ruddii strains, allowing the interrogation of phylogenetic group, functional category of genes, and biosynthetic pathway analysis. Accordingly, overall genome size, number of genes, and GC content of C. ruddii strains were reduced. Phylogenetic analysis based on the whole genome proteomes of 30 related bacterial strains revealed that the six C. ruddii strains form a cluster in same clade. Biosynthetic pathway analysis showed that complete sets of genes for biosynthesis of essential amino acids, except tryptophan, are absent in six C. ruddii strains. All genes for tryptophan biosynthesis are present in three C. ruddii strains (BC, BT, and YCCR). It is likely that the host may depend on a secondary symbiont to complement its deficient diet. Overall, it is therefore possible that C. ruddii is being driven to extinction and replacement by new symbionts.

  • Pine (Pinaceae family such as Pinus densiflora, P. rigida, and P.taeda) has been used as traditional medicine, its various parts (pine needle, bark, sap) have been used for hemostasis, bruises, and burns. These species were reported that have phenolics and flavonoids. We evaluated the anti-inflammation effects of PRT in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced macrophages. These results showed that the ethyl acetate fraction of cone from Pinus rigida x P.taeda (ECRT) stabilized free radicals by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decreasing the production of nitric oxide (NO). ECRT decreased the expressions of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX-2). In addition, ECRT significantly suppressed mRNA levels of inflammation-related factors such as cytokines, iNOS, and COX-2. As a result, ECRT was related to alleviating various pro-inflammatory mediators through IκB/NF-κB signaling pathways, including p65 translocation to the nucleus.

  • Pitch canker of Pinus rigida, caused by Fusarium subglutinans f. sp. pini, was first noticed in Inchon, Korea, and is now being spread into other plantations of pines. Typical symptoms re resin flows from canders on the shoots, branches, and trunks, and resin-soaking of the sap wood under the bark. Pathogenic fungi were isolated from the infected shoots, branches, and sees on Fusarium-selective medium. Mycelial growth and microscopic characteristics were examined. Pathogenicity test was carried out by inoculating four common species of pines (P. rigida, P. densiflora, P. thunbergii, and P. koraiensis) in Korea. P. rigida and P. thunbergii showed symptoms identical to those of naturally infected trees, while P. densiflora and P. koraiensis remained free symptomless.

However, the causal relationship has not been conclsive between IT investment and economic performance, which makes a decision in IT investment tricky. IT as a growth strategy is critical to the developing countries which experienced resource constraint.   • 시설오이의 국내 재배면적은 2001년도에 5,412 ha 으로서 389천톤을 생산하였다. 재배작형은 시설억제, 촉성, 반촉성, 시설조숙 등 매우 다양하고, 재배작형과 지역적인 재배관습 그리고 소비경향에 따라 재배품종 또한 다양하다. 시설오이의 단보당 평균 수량은 7,184 kg 이지만, 이들 재배요인에 따라 단보당 수량이 지역별로 4배 정도로 차이가 많다. 즉 중부지방에서 무가온 시설조숙재배인 경우 과중이 120g 내외인 백다다기 오이를 4~5개월 정도 단기간 재배하기 때문에 수량이 단보당 3,500kg 정도이지만, 남부지방에서 7~10개월 정도 장기간 청장계 오이를 재배하는 경우에는 단보당수량이 12,000kg 이상을 넘는다.
