The relationship between seeding depth and apical hook opening was investigated in the hypocotyl hook of soybean (Glycine max Merr., cv. Hwanggeum). Seeds were sawn in different depths (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 cm). The hook opening was slowly progressed with seeding depth. Hook angle opening velocity was negatively correlated with hypocotyl growth at the significant level of P<0.01. It was also clearly observed that seeding depth was positively correlated with hypocotyl growth, suggesting the induction of hypocotyl growth by deep sawing. Futhermore, the contents of fructose and glucose in hypocotyls were about higher than in cotyledons. Both sugars in hypocotyls were highest at the emergence stage. After emergence, their levels were obviously reduced. Total soluble sugar contents continuously retained in cotyledons which were grown at 2.5 and 5.0 cm seeding depths whereas the contents in cotyledons of deep sawn soybean were extremely lowered. It seemed that sugars were actively used to cell construction during the hypocotyl elongation. The results demonstrated that apical hook opening is closely related with light signal after emergence. It implied that the delay of hook opening in deep sawn seeds was resulted from hypocotyl growth in darkness. We suggest that apical hook opening is progressed in sucrose catabolism by light.

C-Hook is a kind of conveyer system for transporting steel coil in POSCO. To detect the current position and the trajectory of steel coils in a plant, C-Hooks are tracked by an inspection system based on PLC. The inspection system detects transit of C-Hooks by monitoring a physical contact between steel bars on a C-Hook and the inspection sensors. However, this system is not reliable because of the abrasion, damage and aging. Moreover, the number of distinguishable C-Hooks is limited by the number of combination of steel bars on a C-Hook. It means that more steel bars should be installed for distinguishing the more C-Hooks. Therefore, the conventional system is difficult and expensive to maintain. To overcome these problems, we propose a C-Hook identification system that uses RFID which is a non-contact type identification system, and evaluate its performance and applicability from a new monitoring program that operates along with the conventional system in the real environment of POSCO.

In this study, three signal control strategies such as Bike box, Hook-turn, and 6-phase were assessed for various traffic conditions at signalized intersections incorporating bicycle left-turn traffic. Results showed that the size of a waiting zone mainly affected the performance of signal control in both Bike box and Hook-turn. Both Bike box and Hook-turn yielded an identical vehicle delay, but Bike box produced less bicycle delay than Hook-turn by 2.5~29.9 sec/veh for undersaturated traffic conditions. For saturated traffic condition, Bike box produced less vehicle delay than Hook-turn and 6-phase strategies, but bicycle delay was found to increase at the 700 vph of bicycle traffic compared to 6-phase. Bicycle delay was greatly increased under Hook-turn and Bike box strategies when bicycle traffic was greater than 300 vph and 500 vph, respectively. It was also shown that bicycle delay could be significantly reduced by providing appropriate size of queueing space. In addition, Bike box was likely to yield less vehicle and bicycle delay than Hook-turn for traffic volume patterns investigated in this study.
Wire rods are carried by C-Hooks and are tracked by bringing the inspection sensors into contact with steel bars on the C-Hooks. However, the conventional system using mechanical equipment is not reliable due to aging, wearing and bending of steel bars. To overcome these problems, a non-contact type identification system is required. This paper introduces the radio frequency identification(RFID) technology which is one of the most popular non-contact identification methods, and evaluates its performance in the real environment of POSCO. Specifically, we use tags which are designed for operating on high temperature and allowing easy attaching and detaching on the C-Hook. A new monitoring program is developed for reacting upon the conventional system and showing the results of reading of reading tags.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to determine the anatomic relationships between neurovascular structures and the transverse carpal ligament so as to avoid complications during endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery. Methods : Twenty-eight patients (age range, 35-69 years) with carpal tunnel syndrome were entered into the study. We examined through wrist magnetic resonance imaging in three different positions (neutral, radial flexion, and ulnar flexion) and determined several anatomic landmark (distance from the hamate hook to the median nerve, ulnar nerve, and ulnar vessel) based on the lateral margin of the hook of the hamate. The median nerve and ulnar neurovascular structure were studied with the wrist in the neutral, ulnar, and radial flexion positions. Results : The ulnar neurovascular structures usually passed just over or ulnar to the hook of the hamate. However, in 12 hands, a looped ulnar artery coursed 0.6-3.3 mm radial to the hook of the hamate and continued to the superficial palmar arch. The looped ulnar artery migrates on the ulnar side of Guyon's canal (-5.2-1.8 mm radial to the hook of the hamate) with the wrist in radial flexion. During ulnar flexion of the wrist, the ulnar artery shifts more radially beyond the hook of the hamate (-2.5-5.7 mm). Conclusion : It is appropriate to transect the ligament greater than 4 mm apart from the lateral margin of the hook of the hamate without placing the edge of the scalpel toward the ulnar side. We would also recommend not transecting the transverse carpal ligament in the ulnar flexed wrist position to protect the ulnar neurovascular structure.

The aim of the study was to determine the antioxidant activities of the plants with origin of the Far East. The Carlemannia tetragona Hook f., which is a species of plant in the family Carlemanniaceae and Celastrus virens which is a species of plant in the family Celastraceae were tested for antioxidant activities. Samples were prepared using 95% ethanol using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate free radical) assay for assessing the antioxidant activity. Ascorbic acid was used for positive control for DPPH assay. DPPH assay experiment showed that extracts of the Carlemannia tetragona Hook. f., and Celastrus virens might have anti-oxidant activity 54.5% and 258% higher, respectively, compared to control. To determine the cell toxicity of these plant extracts, MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay was used. MTT assay experiment showed that Carlemannia tetragona Hook. f., and Celastrus virens might have less toxicity 23.3% and 27.5%, respectively, compared to control. Taken together, these experiments showed that Celastrus virens extracts might have much higher antioxidant activities than Carlemannia tetragona Hook. f., with relatively lower toxicity. This implies that this study might provide a basis to develop a new powerful antioxidant candidate for human diseases therapeutics.
