  • In this study, the supersonic panel flutter of doubly curved composite sandwich panels with variable thickness is considered under aerothermoelastic loading. Considering different radii of curvatures of the face sheets in this paper, the thickness of the core is a function of plane coordinates (x,y), which is unique. For the first time in the current model, the continuity conditions of the transverse shear stress, transverse normal stress and transverse normal stress gradient at the layer interfaces, as well as the conditions of zero transverse shear stresses on the upper and lower surfaces of the sandwich panel are satisfied. The formulation is based on an enhanced higher order sandwich panel theory and the vertical displacement component of the face sheets is assumed as a quadratic one, while a cubic pattern is used for the in-plane displacement components of the face sheets and the all displacement components of the core. The formulation is based on the von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ nonlinear approximation, the one-dimensional Fourier equation of the heat conduction along the thickness direction, and the first-order piston theory. The equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived using the Hamilton principle and the results are validated by the latest results published in the literature.

  • Thermo-mechanical buckling of sandwich beams with a stiff core and face sheets made of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) within the framework of Timoshenko beam theory is presented. The material properties of FG-CNTRC are supposed to vary continuously in the thickness direction and are estimated through the rule of mixture. Also the properties of these materials should be considered temperature dependent. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using Hamilton's principle and solved using an efficient technique called the Differential Transform Method (DTM) to achieve the critical buckling of the sandwich beam in uniform thermal environment. A detailed parametric study is guided to investigate the effects of carbon nanotube volume fraction, slenderness ratio, core-to-face sheet thickness ratio, and clamped-clamped, simply-simply and clamped-simply end supports on the critical buckling behavior of sandwich beams with FG-CNTRC face sheets. Numerical results for comparison of sandwich beams with uniformly distributed carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (UD-CNTRC) face sheets with those with FG-CNTRC face sheets are also presented.

  • In this paper, free vibration of Cooper-Naghdi micro sandwich cylindrical shell with saturated porous core and reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT) piezoelectric composite face sheets is investigated by using first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and modified couple stress theory (MCST). The sandwich shell is subjected to magneto-thermo-mechanical loadings with temperature dependent material properties. Energy method and Hamilton's principle are used for deriving of the motion equations. The equations are solved by Navier's method. The results are compared with the obtained results by the other literatures. The effects of various parameters such as saturated porous distribution, geometry parameters, volume fraction and temperature change on the natural frequency of the micro-sandwich cylindrical shell are addressed. The obtained results reveal that the natural frequency of the micro sandwich cylindrical shell increases with increasing of the radius to thickness ratio, Skempton coefficient, the porosity of the core, and decreasing of the length to radius ratio and temperature change.

  • In this article, the free vibration analysis of annular sandwich plates with various functionally graded (FG) porous cores and carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) facesheets is investigated based on modified couple stress theory (MCST) and first order shear deformation theories (FSDT). The annular sandwich plate is composed of two face layers and a functionally graded porous core layer which contains different porosity distributions. Various approaches such as extended mixture rule (EMR), Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka (E-M-T), and Halpin-Tsai (H-T) are used to determine the effective material properties of microcomposite circular sandwich plate. The governing equations of motion are extracted by using Hamilton's principle and FSDT. A Ritz method has been utilized to calculate the natural frequency of an annular sandwich plate. The effects of material length scale parameters, boundary conditions, aspect and inner-outer radius ratios, FG porous distributions, pore compressibility and volume fractions of CNTs are considered. The results are obtained by Ritz solutions that can be served as benchmark data to validate their numerical and analytical methods in the future work and also in solid-state physics, materials science, and micro-electro-mechanical devices.

  • The thermal eigenvalue responses of the graded sandwich shell structure are evaluated numerically under the variable thermal loadings considering the temperature-dependent properties. The polynomial type rule-based sandwich panel model is derived using higher-order type kinematics considering the shear deformation in the framework of the equivalent single-layer theory. The frequency values are computed through an own home-made computer code (MATLAB environment) prepared using the finite element type higher-order formulation. The sandwich face-sheets and the metal core are discretized via isoparametric quadrilateral Lagrangian element. The model convergence is checked by solving the similar type published numerical examples in the open domain and extended for the comparison of natural frequencies to have the final confirmation of the model accuracy. Also, the influence of each variable structural parameter, i.e. the curvature ratios, core-face thickness ratios, end-support conditions, the power-law indices and sandwich types (symmetrical and unsymmetrical) on the thermal frequencies of FG sandwich curved shell panel model. The solutions are helping to bring out the necessary influence of one or more parameters on the frequencies. The effects of individual and the combined parameters as well as the temperature profiles (uniform, linear and nonlinear) are examined through several numerical examples, which affect the structural strength/stiffness values. The present study may help in designing the future graded structures which are under the influence of the variable temperature loading.

  • In this paper, the analytical model to understand the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the foam core sandwich structures was proposed. Using the analytical model, efforts were made to find the optimal stacking sequence of composite skins for maximum transmittance of electromagnetic wave. Numerical analyses of unidirectional composites and foam as a function of incident angle were performed. From the results of analysis, the general tendencies of transmittance of electromagnetic wave through composites and foam were obtained. Based on the general tendencies, optimal stacking sequences of composite skins for the maximum transmittance of electromagnetic wave were found with certain ranges of incident angle using genetic algorithm(GA).

  • First, the effect of the geometry such as the curved shape of the struts composing the truss structure of WBK is elaborated. Then, analytic solutions for the material properties of WBK and the maximum loads of a WBK-cored sandwich panel under bending are derived. A design optimization with the face sheet thickness and the core height selected as the design variables is presented for given slenderness ratios of the WBK core. Unless the face sheet thickness is limited, the optimal design to give the maximum load per weight is always found at a confluence of three failure modes, namely, face sheet yielding, indentation plastic, and core shear modeB plastic.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the vibration and sound generation characteristics of the sandwich panel. Two thick panels were assumed to be separated by a compliant viscoelastic core. The transverse vibration induced by an external impact was analyzed using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. For applying arbitrary boundary condition of the panels, the edges were assumed to be supported by the translational and rotational springs. The beam functions were used as the trial functions. The effect of the boundary condition and viscoelastic core on the resulting vibration characteristics was investigated. The radiated sound power was analyzed using the proposed numerical model and the Rayleigh integral. The dynamic properties of the core and the mass-stiffness-mass resonance frequency had significant influence on the impact sound.

  • The L-bending of inner-structure bonded sandwich sheet metal is examined by using a bending die attached to the material testing machine. The specimen is composed of top and bottom layers and a middle layer of pyramid-core structure and each layer is bonded by brazing. The variables chosen for experiments were clearance between punch and die, location of bend line on the specimen surface and clamping type of specimen during L-bending. Effects of these variables on deformation of specimen around die-corner radius were investigated. It was shown that the irregular shapes of recess are formed in the inner layer of bended parts and they greatly depend on working conditions.

  • A condensed model is proposed for the simulation of forming of sandwich sheet with pyramid core. A corresponding finite element analysis for L-type bending is carried out to prove the accuracy and the effectiveness. Simulation results are compared with those of experiment. Deformation shape and post-buckling behavior by simulation are in good agreement with those of experiment for the considerable range of deformation. From the comparison of force-displacement curve, it is shown that the proposed model shows good prediction of the forming force compared to the experiment. Thus, the effectiveness of the proposed method is sufficiently demonstrated.
