Pedagogical Significance and Students' Informal Knowledge of Sample and Sampling (표본 개념의 교육적 의의와 인식 특성 연구)

  • In the Korean curriculum, students learn the concept of sample, sampling and other concepts related to sample and sampling, when they have reached the 10th grade of high school. But before the 10th grade, they have an activity about data collection, data analysis and the formulation of conclusion. We then investigated and analyzed the informal knowledge of students before they receive formal instructions. The results enabled the identification of the maximum response rate for each question that each student agreed or disagreed with. In particular, it didn't agree with how students consider the characteristic of population in the process of sampling, and the students agreed on a sampling process without considering the characteristic of the population or the components that consist the population. It showed that 5th grade students didn't investigate the data connected with sampling, and didn't understand the validity of sample survey process. While, 6th grade students equally understood sample size, sampling process, the reliance of data acquired through sample survey that applied to the source of judgment. But in details, it revealed that student had a misconception, or stayed at a subjective judgment level. The significant point is that many high school students didn't adequately understood a sample size with sampling. Though statistics instruction has traditionally been delayed until upper secondary education, this inquiry convinced us that this delay is unnecessary.

Sound Enhancement of low Sample rate Audio Using LMS in DWT Domain (DWT영역에서 LMS를 이용한 저 샘플링 비율 오디오 신호의 음질 향상)

  • In order to mitigate the problems in storage space and network bandwidth for the full CD quality audio, current digital audio is always restricted by sampling rate and bandwidth. This restriction normally results in low sample rate audio or calls for the data compression scheme such as MP3. However, they can only reproduce a lower frequency range than a regular CD quality because of the Nyquist sampling theory. Consequently they lose rich spatial information embedded in high frequency. The propose of this paper is to propose efficient high frequency enhancement of low sample rate audio using n adaptive filtering and DWT analysis and synthesis. The proposed algorithm uses the LMS adaptive algorithm to estimate the missing high frequency contents in DWT domain and it then reconstructs the spectrally enhanced audio by using the DWT synthesis procedure. Several experiments with real speech and audio are performed and compared with other algorithm. From the experimental results of spectrogram and sonic test, we confirm that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other algorithm and reasonably works well for the most of audio cases.

  • This study was performed to estimate interrelation between characteristics of sediment and nutrient releare from sediment in Dae-cheong lake. For the investigations, sediments were sampled in June and October 1997 at fish farms, embayment, and the main stream of Dae-cheong lake. Items for investigation are as follows; water content, weight loss on ignition(IG), porosity of sediment, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen(TKN), content of element(H, N, C), nutrient release rate. Water content and porosity were measured to conjecture the physical trait and grain size. And weight loss on ignition was measured to determine the contents of organic substance. For the determination of nutrient release rate, $PO_4-P$ and $NH_4-N$ concentration of interstitial water and overlying water were measured. Release rate of nutrients which has direct influenced upon the water quality were 0.05-8.63mg-$P/m^2{\cdot}day$ and 4.99-36.56mg-$N/m^2{\cdot}day$. And it was found that release rate was measured higher in the 1st sampling than in the 2nd sampling. And for determination of the humus level of sediment, carbon and nitrogen content were measured by using elemental analyzer. Generally, C/N ratio is used to determine humus level of lake sediment. As a result of elemental analysis, C/N ratio was determined in the range of 7.64~11.55, so humus level of Dae-cheong lake sediment was estimated from mesohumic state to oligohumic state.

  • Ultra-wideband communication systems for impulse radio have merits that are possible for either high resolution ranging system or radio determination. Conventionally, in order to accomplish these functions, the rapid analog to digital convertor (ADC) is necessary to apply radio determination system operating in time domain. However, considering that low rate - wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN) aims to low-cost hardware implementation, the expensive ADC converting GHz sampling per second is not appropriate. So, this paper introduces the high resolution ranging system operating in frequency domain with using low sampling rate ADC, and a new non-coherent ranging scheme utilizing analog Frequency Modulation (FM) mode for the frequency domain transformation. To verify the superiority of the proposed ranging algorithm working in frequency domain, the suggested IEEE 802.15.4a TG channel model is used to exploit affirmative features of the proposed algorithm with conducting the simulation results.

  • In this paper, we consider a hierarchical Bayes estimation of the parameter, the reliability and hazard rate function based on type-II censored samples from a Rayleigh failure model. Bayes calculations can be implemented easily by means of the Gibbs sampler. A numerical study is provided.

  • This paper presents accelerated life tests for Type I censoring data under probabilistic stresses. Probabilistic stress, $S_j$, is the random variable for stress influenced by test environments, test equipments, sampling devices and use conditions. The hazard rate, ,$theta_j$, is the random variable of environments and the function of probabilistic stress. Also it is assumed that the general stress distribution is uniform, the life distribution for the given hazard rate, $\theta$, is exponential and inverse power law model holds. In this paper, we obtained maximum likelihood estimators of model parameters and the mean life in use stress condition.

For multi-rate PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) input like as 48/96/192 kHz, a external sample-rate converter is necessary to the DSD encoder. This paper has been proposed a digital filter structure composed of sample-rate converter and interpolation filter for the DSD encoder with multi-rate (48/96/192 kHz) PCM input. without a external sample-rate converter.
