  • The Primary production and budget of organic carbon at rainy and dry period was surveyed to evaluate the contribution of primary production in Paldang Reservoir. Primary productivity of phytoplankton showed remarkable differences depending on sampling dates and sites, ranged from 110 to 2,701 mgC $m^{-2}day^{-1}$. In the rainy period of April and August when there had been frequent rainfall resulting short hydraulic retention time and low algal biomass in Paldang Reservoir, autochthonous organic carbon occupied very low ratio, farming approximately 7 percent of total inflow of organic carbon. However in June when it almost never rained and dominant algal species changed from diatoms to green algae and small flagellates, autochthonous organic carbon from primary productivity of phytoplankton formed 29 percent of total inflow of organic carbon.

  • Objectives: Firefighters could be exposed to a range of toxic chemicals during firefighting. When tyre burns, various toxic chemicals including volatile organic compounds(VOCs) could be emitted. In this study, the researchers assessed the VOC exposure of firefighters during tyre fire suppression through biomonitoring. Methods: There was a big tyre fire on 12 March 2023. Of the responding firefighters, we recruited 14 participants to collect their urine after firefighting. One week later, researchers collected firefighters' urine again right after their off-duty period. We analyzed each metabolite of benzene, toluene, xylene, and styrene in urine and compared their exposure level based on sampling time. Results: The detection rate for metabolite of benzene, toluene, styrene, and xylene in urine sampled at each time was 43%-64%, 100%, 86%-100%, and 100%, respectively. Except for the benzene, metabolite levels measured in urine after firefighting were similar to that from off-duty period. However, the median concentration of benzene metabolite in urine sampled after firefighting was three times higher compared to that from off-duty period(34.2 ㎍/g crea. and 10.9 ㎍/g crea., respectively.) The estimated airborne concentration of benzene calculated from metabolite level in urine was 0.16 ppm, which exceeded the recommended exposure level set by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Conclusions: This study shows that firefighters could be exposed to the high level of VOCs including benzene during their firefighting especially at tyre fire. These results could be used as a valuable data to prove firefighters' exposure to hazardous chemicals during their duty.

  • Background: The available information on terrestrial pest gastropods and their impact on the environment worldwide is scarce and outdated. The present study aimed to address this gap by conducting the first comprehensive survey of pest gastropods in the Nuwara Eliya District, an important vegetable growing area in the highlands of Sri Lanka. Eighty agricultural lands were surveyed over two years by establishing ten 1 m2 sampling plots per crop type in each agricultural land. Geo-coordinates, air temperature, elevation, relative humidity, daily rainfall, soil pH, species richness and abundance were recorded for rainy and non-rainy periods. The relationship between species composition and environmental variables was analyzed using multi-regression models and distribution maps. Results: Out of the 14 species recorded in agricultural lands, nine were identified as exotic pest species. Species abundance (t = 4.69, p < 0.05) and diversity was higher in the rainy period and the dominant species during this period were Bradybaena similaris (t = 2.69, p < 0.05) and Deroceras reticulatum (t = 2. 46, p < 0.05). Eggs and estivating adults were found in soil and under decaying organic matter during the non-rainy period. The exotic species showed broader preferences for the measured environmental factors and showed a wider range in distribution compared to the native species. Variation in pest gastropod composition was significantly accounted for by elevation, relative humidity, soil pH and daily rainfall. Additionally, the species richness and abundance varied across locations due to the combined effects of elevation, crop type and stage, and field type. Conclusions: The study emphasizes the importance of understanding the biology and ecology of gastropod pests to develop effective management strategies. By considering the influence of environmental factors and implementing appropriate soil management techniques, such as targeting specific habitats and crop stages, it is possible to mitigate pest populations and minimize their impact on agricultural lands. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into the dynamics and interactions of terrestrial gastropods in agricultural ecosystems, supporting sustainable pest management practices.

  • In SRM drive, the ON·OFF angles of each phase switch should be accurately controlled in order to control the torque and speed stably. The accuracy of the switching angles is dependent upon the resolution of the encoder and the sampling period of the microprocessor, that are used to provide the information of the rotor position and to control the SRM power circuit, respectively. However, as the speed increases, the amount of the switching angle deviation from the preset values is also increased. Therefore, the low cost encoder suitable for the practical and stable SRM drive is proposed and the control algorithm to provide the switching signals using the simple digital logic circuit is also presented in this paper, As a result, a stable high speed SRM drive can be achieved by the high resolution switching angle control and it is verified from the experiments that the proposed encoder the logic controller can be a powerful candidate for the practical low cost SRM drive.

  • This paper presents an improved fuzzy logic-based adaptive PWM technique. A fuzzy logic- based adaptive PWM technique determines the optimal output voltage vector which takes into account both direction of back-emf and direction of current error vector. This technique has a simple structure and a good level of stability, but it has disadvantages. The longer sampling period, the larger current error. Because there is no considerations of the current error magnitude of each phases. The proposed method improves the control performance by selecting the optimum switching pattern in which the magnitudes of current errors are considered introducing space vector concept. Simulation results using Matlab/Simulink show that the proposed control method reduces current error keeping the merit of previous one.

  • A control technique which utilizes the stator flux components as control variables has been applied to a speed sensorless induction motor drive. The scheme may be regarded as a development of a DTC scheme, aimed achieve constant switching frequency operation. At each sampling period the required voltage vector is calculated on the basis of the error between the reference and the estimated stator flux vector. The problems related to the VSI dead time and the stator flux estimation at low speed have been analyzed, and an efficient solution has been proposed.

  • The outdoor antenna servo system is subject to has significant torque disturbances from wind pressures and gusts on the antenna structures, as well as bearing and aerodynamic frictions. This control system should provide a sharp directivity in spite of the environmental disturbances and internal uncertainties. Therefore, the implementation of a real-time controller is necessary for the precise generation of the reference signal and robust tracking performance. In this paper, the discrete-time controller for the quick tracking of a target communication satellite is designed by applying the sampled-data $H_{\infty}$ control theory along with the reference signal generated by an improved conventional step-tracking algorithm. The sampled-data $H_{\infty}$controller demonstrates superior robustness for the longer sampling period when compared with a simple PID controller.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the process of smoking cessation behavior in adults with a history of smoking cessation. The subject were 17 adults selected by theoretical sampling. The data were collected by in-depth interviews using audiotape recording over a period of six months. The data were analyzed simultaneously by a constant comparative method in which new data were continuously coded in categories and properties according to Strauss and Corbin' methodology. Analysis of the data resulted in the identification of 12 categories. The result of this study are as follows : 1. Smoking cessation in adults is caused by fear about health, environmental pressure of smoking cessation, and intention of smoking cessation. 2. Smoking cessation occurs in connection with situations of limited smoking 3. Maintenence of smoking cessation is related to psychological stress, and environmental cues to smoking. 4. In the smoking cessation process, adults experienced either health promotion or relapse. It is suggested that the result of this study may contributed to the development of a strategy for decreasing smoking behavior among adults.
