  • Nutritional researchers world-wide are using large-scale sample survey methods to study nutritional health epidemiology and services utilization in general, non-clinical populations. This article provides a review of important statistical methods and software that apply to descriptive and multivariate analysis of data collected in sample surveys, such as national health and nutrition examination survey. A comparative data analysis of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) was used to illustrate analytical procedures and design effects for survey estimates of population statistics, model parameters, and test statistics. This article focused on the following points, method of approach to analyze of the sample survey data, right software tools available to perform these analyses, and correct survey analysis methods important to interpretation of survey data. It addresses the question of approaches to analysis of complex sample survey data. The latest developments in software tools for analysis of complex sample survey data are covered, and empirical examples are presented that illustrate the impact of survey sample design effects on the parameter estimates, test statistics, and significance probabilities (p values) for univariate and multivariate analyses.

  • This paper describes an outline of the sampling design for crop area survey and product survey in Korea. The design attempts to from a double statification, to obtain an efficient allocation of the sample and to reduce the sampling error by establishign crop concentrated strata. The optimum numbers of sample field and sample plot are investigated. The design is made it possible to reduce the sampling errors as well as to reduce the sample size further than the present survey.

  • Objectives: Sample surveys have been increasingly used by Korean medical doctors for many studies. We present how to conduct higher quality sample surveys in Korea. Methods: According to the 11 principal steps for sample surveys, the concrete issues that academic researchers tend to overlook are illustrated and a variety of methods for improving survey quality are discussed. Results: The survey statistics produced by some researchers could be subject to large errors. This would be mainly due to misunderstandings about the system of principles called survey methodology. The best strategy for avoiding these errors will be to follow the suggested guidelines. Conclusions: For the development of traditional Korean medicine, the role of survey studies is important. Conducting surveys of a better quality based on survey methodology will be beneficial to researchers.

  • One of the Repeated survey which estimates variability of population, we can be consider rotation sample survey. There are two kinds of rotation sample survey - onelevel rotation sample survey and multi-level rotation sample survey. In rotation sample survey, Composite estimator is used to measure level or level change of the population. This study suggests Generalized Composite estimator as considering intraclass correlation in multi-level rotation sample survey, and optimal weight minimizing variance of estimator. Numerical example shows efficiency of Generalized Composite estimator as considering intraclass correlation according to the sample unit and change degree of intraclass correlation in the rotation group.

  • The Korean Anthropometric Survey (Size Korea) is a sample survey which estimates on percentiles of several dimensional measurements of the human body arid its component parts. The purpose of this study is to design a sample, which is designed on the base of 1997 survey database. Two different methods are considered to get the sample size for estimating the 5th and 95th percentile of body dimensions of Korean age range 0-80 years.

  • The farm population survey and the livestock survey are sample surveys related to agriculture. Two new sample designs for these surveys are considered. Shi-Gun(county) estimates in the farm population survey and Shi-Do(county) estimates in the livestock survey can be obtained. Also the sample sizes are reduced. To increase the precision of the estiamtes strarified simple random samples are used and particularly purposive samples are introduced in livestock survey. Lastly the method of management and replacement of samples are investigated for successive occasion survey.

  • When a social scientist prepares to conduct a survey, he/she faces the problem of deciding an appropriate sample size. Sample size is closely connected with cost, time, and the precision of the sample estimate. It is thus important to choose a size appropriate for the survey, but this may be difficult for survey researchers not skilled in a sampling theory. In this study we propose a method to determine a sample size under certain assumptions when the quantity of interest is measured by a Likert scale.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study was to investigate consistency in estimating the number of vacant jobs using the two business labor force survey with two different time points of survey. Design/methodology/approach - We studied the cause of the differences in estimating the number of vacant jobs between the monthly sample and the new sample in business labor force survey. Findings - To summarize our findings, As the size of the company increases, the number of vacant jobs in the company also increases, and the probability that the number of vacant jobs in the company is zero decreases. The monthly sample was assessed to have a higher likelihood that the number of vacant jobs in the company was zero and the number of vacant jobs was considerable compared to the local sample. Research implications or Originality - Because local survey sample companies tend to minimize the number of vacant jobs even when they reply under the same conditions, the estimation result of the number of vacant jobs in the current monthly survey differs significantly from the estimation result of the local survey. Divergent "degrees of knowledge of question items," survey methodologies, or investigators could be the causes of the various response trends.

  • Recently, the importance of livestock statistics is increasing because of the food consumption pattern in Korea is changing. We compare the old sample design based on the 1995 National Agriculture Census with the new sample design based on the 2000 National Agriculture Census. We present some considerations to improve the efficiency of the sample design in livestock sector survey.
