Changes in salinity, hydraulic conductivity and penetration resistance in a reclaimed tidal land reclaimed in 1986 were studied. The salinity monitoring based on electrical conductivity of saturated extract, ECe, was conducted from 1994, when the land use for experimental crop production started after tile drainage. The site was abandoned since 1999. The hydraulic conductivity was measured by a sand fill auger hole method, and the resistance was measured with a dynamic penetrometer in situ. The averaged ECe in 1994 was $33.7dS\;m^{-1}$ ranging from 25.5 to $44.8dS\;m^{-1}$, and was decreased to $25.7dS\;m^{-1}$ with large range from 0.8 to $70.3dS\;m^{-1}$ before experiment was $1.89{\times}10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$. It increased to $1.32{\times}10^6m\;s^{-1}$ in the top 20-cm soil with large variability, while it showed $3.44{\times}10^7m\;s^{-1}$ beneath the 20-cm soil depth with less variability. The penetration resistance of the soil ranged from 0.05 to 9.99MPa. The vertical distribution of penetration resistance indicated the hardened layer was developed at the depth of 20~40 cm where the hydraulic conductivity was sharply decreased.

Reinforced concrete is a building material that is generally used in modern society. Also, reinforced concrete structures in high salinity environments have low durability due to corrosion of reinforcing bars due to infiltrated chlorine ions. Anion exchange resins have an ability to immobilize chlorine ions in the resin while releasing their anions. As a material, it has already been shown that it is possible to fix the chloride ion inside the cementitious material through the cement mortar experiment. The purpose of this study is to confirm the compressive strength of cement mortar using powdered anion exchange resin after powdering an anion exchange resin. In order to confirm the chloride ion fixation ability of the powder anion exchange resin, chlorine ion penetration resistance test was carried out.

Finishing materials used during the construction of reinforced concrete structures aid in providing resistance to carbonation and help ensure the durability of a structure. However, detailed examinations of this phenomena using data gained from long-term outdoor exposure are not only lacking, but also are not taken into account as factors affected by the local environment. In this research, the velocity coefficient in terms of carbonation is compared as a difference according to the local region and the averaged annual temperature, and the carbonation-preventive effects of finishing materials are analyzed. As an outcome of this study, the results of long-term carbonation can be evaluated from carbonation resistance R induced by an acceleration carbonation test.
Eggplant pickles were classified into three groups based on salt concentration (1, 3, 5%) and three groups based on drying time (30, 60 and 120 minutes), followed by storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 28 days. Raw eggplant contains 94.82% water content. The increase in salt concentration and drying time caused a decrease in the moisture content. Compared to the 0.27% ash content of raw eggplant, the ash content of eggplant pickles increased noticeably with increasing salt concentration due to penetration into the eggplant pickles. pH values decreased significantly as the levels of salt concentration and dying time increased (p<0.05). In terms of storage time, pH values decreased from 21 days. The variation in salinity increased significantly as the concentration of salt increased. Compared to normal pickles salted at 5.39% salinity, eggplant pickles constituted 0.27~0.77% (1%), 0.40~1.14% (3%), and 0.47~11.20% (5%) 'low-salinity' eggplant pickles. Reducing-sugar content differed on the dates of 7, 14 and 21 in drying time and at 3% salinity. Hardness differed at 30, 60, and 120M on the 28th and 1, 5% salt concentration. Resilience differed according to drying time and from dates of 0 to 14th. The number of total microbes decreased at low salinity. In terms of storage time, the number of microbes tended to decrease after the 21st. In the consumer preference test, lightness of 5%-30M was the highest value.

Reinforcement corrosion is generally prohibited under normal condition by the alkalinity of the pore water in the concrete. However, concrete structures in marine environment are subjected to chloride attack due to the high salinity of the sea water. Thus the probability of steel corrosion becomes higher when the chloride ions are introduced into the concrete. Steel corrosion is a decisive factor for the determination of service life of the marine concrete structure because chloride ions are abundant in the sea, and piers are the typical construction elements in concrete structures in marine environment. Hence, it is of great importance to evaluate the service life of the piers. In this paper, chloride penetration analysis for the rectangular pier in the marine environment is performed considering the diffusion and convection movement of chlorides. Result reveals that the service life of the reinforcement with drying-wetting cycles is much shorter than that of the reinforcement with saturated condition. This may be due to the fact that moisture movement is much faster that chloride diffusion.

To find out the effect of the spat planting time and environmental factors in the arkshell, Scapharca broughtonii (Schrenck), we investigated the growth, survival rate of arkshell and habitat characteristics in Gamak Bay, Yeoja Bay and Saryang Island. We planted artificial spats of arkshell in Gamak Bay and Yeoja Bay at November 2004, and also planted domestic and Chinese natural spats in Saryang Island at March 2005. We measured growth, survival rate of arkshell, physiochemical parameters of the water mass (water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and chlorophyll a) and characteristics of the sediment (oxygen penetration depth, oxygen microprofiles, ignition loss and chemical oxygen demand) by monthly. The cumulative survival ratio of arkshell in Gamak Bay was the highest at December, whereas the ratio of arkshell in Yeoja Bay was recorded as 0% at October. The monthly growth rates of arkshell length in Gamak Bay and Yeoja Bay were the highest in May and the growth rate of the Korean arkshell in Saryang Island was higher than Chinese ones significantly. The high mortality (> 65%) of the arkshell in Yeoja Bay during summer probably caused by high water temperature, inflow of low salinity water, and low dissolved oxygen concentration in sediment. The concentrations of nutrient and sediment COD were considered to play an important role in the monthly survival ratio of arkshell in Gamak Bay and Sarayng Island. We suggest that the growth and mortality of arkshell might be influenced to the planting time of spat and the habitat characteristics.

This study analyzed changes in the texture and salt content of Chinese cabbage after salting using different methods to determine the effects of low salt brining. To verify the possibility of brining under low salt concentration, Chinese cabbage was salted with 1%, 2%, 6%, and 10% salt solutions by pressing, pressure reduction, or steaming. After salting, the firmness (g, determined using the puncture test) of the Chinese cabbage changed according to the brining methods used, however, an increasing trend in rigidity was observed as the salinity increased. Because the power applied during pressing or pressure reduction treatments is higher, the firmness of and penetration time on the surface of the brined Chinese cabbages after these treatments increased more in the 6% salt solution cabbage. Additionally, the Chinese cabbages treated with steam showed significantly higher firmness and penetration time than those treated by pressing and pressure reduction. As a result of pressing the 6% salt concentrated cabbage with 1.35 $kg{\cdot}f/cm^2$, a pressure reduction from 250 mmHg, and steaming at 100$^{\circ}C$ for 1 min, the cabbage had roughly 2% of the salt concentration, ultimately. These physical treatments of pressing, pressure reduction, and steaming could be used as new methods for preparing salted Chinese cabbage with low salt concentrations for general use.
The objective of this study was to optimize the thermal condition and determine the shelf life of heated Chunbokjang product. The optimum thermal condition of heated Chunbok-jang product was determined by sensory test, and heat penetration curve was obtained by Thermal Microprocessor. Sterilization time was a 21~23 min until $F_0$ value reached 9 min, depending upon the number of abalone. As solid content was reduced and temperature of sterilization was increased, the thermal death time was decreased. The score of sensory test indicated that there was no significant difference in flavor of heated Chunbok-jang product made at different sterilization temperatures (110, 121.1, 125, and $130^{\circ}C$). Heated Chunbok-jang product, however, sterilized at $125^{\circ}C$ showed the highest score in texture and taste values. Salinity and pH were not changed during seven month storages, but texture became firmer, and any microorganism had not been detected from the heated chunbok-jang product during these periods. As a result of storage experiment, the shelf-life of heated Chunbok-jang product was 3-month at room temperature.
In order to study the community structure and distribution patterns of primary producers and their relations to abiotic environmental factors, phytoplankton and environmental parameter were determined during the five times from October, 1989 to July. 1990. 159 taxa of phytoplankton have been identified and the most important species group is diatom which contributes to 70.4% of the total number of species. Ratios of phytoplankton group (neritic species, fresh water species, oceanic species) clustered by habitats were 52%, 18%, 12%, respectively, suggesting study area be the typical estuarine environment which is strongly affected by both fresh water discharge and sea water penetration. Species composition could be governed by the variations of salinity. the standing stocks of primary producer in the study area vary with space and time, showing close correlation with water transparency, and exhibit relatively larger than those of other coastal regions in the Yellow Sea. Spectransies diversity also showed large variation with space and time. According to the cluster analysis, the study area could be divided into two regions (inner part and outer part): in fall and winter, outer area affected by the oceanic water, but in spring and summer, inner estuarine area heavily influenced by fresh water.

The purse-seine fishery is very important in the coastal fishery of Korea and the main fish species of this fishery are mackerals and also the main fishing grounds are Tushima Current region, To investigate the relationship between the fishing grounds of mackerels and oceanographic condition, the distribution of mean catches of mackerals of each size (1974~1982) was firstly examined and the oceanographic observation carried out in eastern and western area of Cheju island, being main fishing grounds, in July and October, 1983. The results are as follows: The main fishing grounds of mackerals were also in the Tsushima Current region in southern sea of Korea and the season of the good catches are in May and September to October. The small and medium size of mackerals of which the body lengths are 27 cm to 31 cm, about 2-3 ages, occupied about 90% but the smaller size mackerals of which body lenth is 22 cm (1 age)were about 40 to 70% in February to March. The locations of seasonal fishing grounds could founded by 15$^{\circ}C$ isotherm which indicates the Tsushima Current Water. With trace of this isotherm it was founded that the fishing grounds near the Korean Strait than that of south of Cheju island moves faster northward and/or later southward. The main fishing grounds eastward and westward of Cheju island were the front areas formed between the Tsushima Current Water and the southern coastal water of Korea or Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water. And also the distributions of transparences, water colors and the penetration of sun light of this fishing grounds were similar to that of the temperature, the salinity or volume of planktonic organism.
