In order to keep the safety of maneuverability under the lateral berthing, it is necessary to estimate the magnitudes and properties of the hydrodynamic forces acting on ship hull quantitatively. In this paper, CFD technique is used to calculate the steady lateral force according to the water depth for Wigley model under the unsteady lateral berthing. The numerical results are analysed into the steady lateral force and the transitional lateral force, and some of reviews for the safety of maneuverability relating to the lateral berthing are discussed based on the computed hydrodynamic forces.
Recently, ship owners are requiring an assessment of sailing safety of a ship from an analysis considering maneuverability and environmental loads etc. In this paper, we propose a new approach to assess sailing safety by considering the prescribed parameters. The concept of sailing safety is developed from DP capability analysis and is based on the maneuvering simulations. While the ship is continuously disturbed due to irregular environmental loads during the simulations, it is steered to keep its course along the way points assumed along a straight path. After relative distances between four edges of the ship and allowable safety boundaries are calculated for 3 hours, the minimum values are obtained. The minimum distances are marked on a polar chart and we call this a quantified safe operation judgment chart which indicates quantified sailing safety.
The present investigations were carried out for the most and fundamental elements, what is called maneuverability, stability, safety, rig, sail about the world famous race, VOLVO60 and America's cup. The results obtained are summarized as follows: First, the structure of yacht should be designed with focuse on the preparation for the preparation of collision with other yachts around, with the dumps of iceberg and also whales nearby. At the same time, the accurate calculation on the each structure and equipment of yacht should be processed for the dynamic stability in the rainstorms. Second, VOLVO60, long-distance sailing, should be emphasized on the light weight and the safety, while the boat for America's cup, short-distance sailing, should be stressed on the appropriate weight of the body and the maximum speed for fast maneuverability. Third, up-to-the minute materials should be developed for the appropriate wind power and the turning of directions.
This paper presents an optimal performance of rear wheel steering vehicle for maneuverability. The maneuverability of vehicle is evaluated in terms of yaw rate, body slip angle and driver input. The maneuverability of vehicle can be improved by rear wheel steering system. To obtain optimal performance of rear wheel steering vehicle, the optimal control history is designed. The high dimensional trajectory optimization problem is solved by formulating a quadratic program considering rear wheel steer input. To evaluate handling performance 7 degree-of-freedom vehicle model with actuation sub-models is designed. A step steer test is conducted to evaluate rear wheel steering vehicle. A response time, a TB factor, overshoot, and yaw rate gain are investigated through objective criteria, assessment webs. The handling performance of vehicle is evaluated via computer simulations. It has been shown from simulation studies that optimal controlled rear wheel steering vehicle provides improved performance compared to others.
The Navigational System is the Fundamental System of Port Transportation System and comprises 3 Subsystems, say, the Waterway System, the Shiphandling System and the Support System. The Waterway System of Navigational System is the important and fundamental System for Traffic Safety inside the Port like a Car Road System on Land. This study aims to make a Guideline for the Optimal Waterway System of Port Development and Safety. The Conclusion of this Paper are drawn : 1) The complicated Shiphandling Operations should be avoided for the period of Physical night Time for eliminating the Human Errors. 2) For the Maneuverability and all-weather Combined Piloting the Inside Turn Point Buoy and Begin the-turn Buoy should be mounted with Racon(T) and Radar Reflector for foggy and bad weathers. 3) The Seabuoy located in the Approaching Area for Pilot Station and making Landfall should be mounted with Racon(G) and Morese A Light for giving a Hint of Pilot Station to the Captain on the Bridge, and these Equipments of Racon and Light should be operated normally and effectively even in a Heavy and stormy weathers. 4) A Basic Practical Expression, 1/2 L sin D, for calculating the Extra Width of Cutoff Turn Regions was derived Originally from the Viewpoint of Turn Maneuvers and Maneuverability of the Ship.
This paper describes development of 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) Electric Vehicle (EV) based driving control algorithm for severe driving situation such as icy road or disturbance. The proposed control algorithm consists three parts : a supervisory controller, an upper-level controller and optimal torque vectoring controller. The supervisory controller determines desired dynamics with cornering stiffness estimator using recursive least square. The upper-level controller determines longitudinal force and yaw moment using sliding mode control. The yaw moment, particularly, is calculated by integration of a side-slip angle and yaw rate for the performance and robustness benefits. The optimal torque vectoring controller determines the optimal torques each wheel using control allocation method. The numerical simulation studies have been conducted to evaluated the proposed driving control algorithm. It has been shown from simulation studies that vehicle maneuverability and lateral stability performance can be significantly improved by the proposed driving controller in severe driving situations.
The model ship of this study, the Baek-Kyung fisheries training ship of Pukyong National University, has a length between perpendiculars of 85 meters, making it not subject to the IMO maneuverability standards. However, understanding the maneuvering characteristics of the vessel is essential for safe navigation. In this regard, this study was conducted to analyze the results from the sea trials of the model ship conducted in accordance with the IMO maneuverability standards. The results of the turning tests met the standards well while in the zig-zag tests, the first overshoot angle exceeded the standard in the 10°/10° test; however, such results met with a difference of 1.8° in the 20°/20° test. Additionally, using the course-stability discrimination formula, the calculated value was -0.0051, indicating unstable course-stability. The results of the stopping tests met the standards well. It is hoped that the analyzed maneuvering characteristics of the model ship from the study results will contribute to the safety of ship navigation.
