As the number of single-person households increases, the consumption of bottled water is increasing. In addition, as the public's interest in radioactivity increases, interest in the field of living radioactivity is also increasing. Since drinking water is an essential element in our daily life, it must be safe from radioactivity. In this study, gamma radiation of drinking spring water was measured and internal exposure dose evaluation was performed to determine its harmfulness. K-40 and uranium-based radioactivity analysis was performed through a high-purity germanium detector, and as a result, drinking water was detected somewhat higher than that of mixing water. Since there is no regulation on the natural radioactivity concentration in Korea, it was compared with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Drinking Water Regulations and World Health Organization standard. As a result, there were some items that exceeded standards. Internal exposure was evaluated according to the effective dose formula of ICRP 119. As the result was derived that a maximum of 1.17 mSv per year could be received. This result means that the dose limit for the general public may be exceeded, and it was judged that it is necessary to set an appropriate standard value and present a recommendation value through continuous monitoring in the future.
Natural mineral water is generally quite different from ordinary drinking water due to its original nature and various properties. The complexity of natural mineral water requires, therefore, not only to identify its nature and proper characteristics, but also to classify them by a reasonable scientific basis of comparison. The study was concentrated on a possible classification technique to natural mineral waters by their constitutions and physico-ehemical properties. The classification was carried out by the computation of such numerical parameters as ionic equivalent percentage, electrolytic conductance or mobility, ionic molecular weight, molecular concentration, equivalent conductivity and degree of ionization in consideration of the determinative criteria as follows -particular single element or molecule -major components of natural waters as bicarbonate, sulphate, chloride, caloride, calcium, magnesium, and sodium -moleculat concentration related to blood osmotic pressure -water temperature at emergence from spring -contents of free carbon dioxide (CO2) -pH value of water -total dissolved solids or salts (NaCl) The results obtained proved out to be clearly distinguhhable from ordinary drinking water as far as concern natural mineral water as an example on the subject -simple water -bicarbonate-predominating water -cold spring -carbonated-non gaseous water -weak alkaline water -non saline water Putting these various results together, the sample turned out to be a kind of natural mineral water that can be used as a drinking water if microbiologically safe.
Cambodia is the representative of developing country in Southeast Asia region. As a view point of water resource, Cambodia has in abundance but public sanitation problems persist in rural areas due to unsafe drinking water and untreated human waste. The purpose of this research is to prepare and develop new strategies for the water aid program in Cambodia by assessing, reviewing, and analyzing the present situation of water pollution for rural areas and the existing water use cycle in these regions. Pproyap and Langthle regions in Pursat province are selected as research areas. Cambodian's rural population in research areas relies on surface water stored in drinking-detention swamps, rain-water jars, and unprotected wells. The two types of main measures, thermotolerant coliform(TTC) bacteria and general pollutants, were conducted to assess the quality of selected water samples for research areas. TTC is a bacterial indicator of waterborne fecal contamination. For the 26 water samples, only one of the samples met the WHO standard for safe drinking water of 0 TTC colony forming units/100 mL.
In Korea, groundwater is main water source in livestock farms. Most dairy and cattle farms have constructed their own wells for human drinking and livestock farming. However, these private residential wells have not been controlled by government and also there was scant study about livestock drinking water quality. Therefore this study was to monitor of the livestock farms' groundwater quality in Korea. Water samples were collected at 123 dairy and cattle farms and were analysed forty six substances with quality standard for drinking water approved by the Minister of Environment. Seventy eight (63.4%) of 123 samples failed to drinking water stand a test. The most frequent contaminants were nitrate-nitrogen and microbial. 22.8% (n=28) of samples showed nitrate-N concentration of higher than 10 mg/L meant that can't be used drinking water for human and the Nitrate-N concentration analysed in the range of 0.2 to 61.2 mg/L. All of 78 failed to drinking samples had microbial problems, especially 5.7% (n=7) of samples indicated water could be contaminated by feces. Other contaminants detected were zinc and evaporation residue. Especially detected zinc concentration (32 mg/L) was about ten times higher than standard of zinc (3 mg/L). Regression analysis indicated that groundwater pH did not influence to nitrate-N concentration but the hardness and chloride could affect to nitrate-N concentration in the groundwater. Most livestock farms were adjacent to crop farmland in Korea. This could cause contamination of groundwater with nitrate-N and pesticide that could accumulate livestock product. Moreover Heavy metal such as zinc and copper could be released from a corrosive plated water pipe in livestock farm. Put together, Korea livestock system is indoor, not pasture-based, hence livestock could be exposed to potential contaminated water consistently. Therefore on the basis of these data, appropriate livestock drinking water quality standards should be prepared to keep livestock healthy and their product safe. Further, livestock drinking water quality should be monitored continuously in suitable livestock drinking water standards.
Recently, in accordance with elevation of life style and economics, the public demand became increasingly concerned about drinking water quality. Without an adequate supply of safe water, healthy and comfortable life could not exist. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide the guidelines and the basic informations to enable supply of clean, tasty and healthy drinking water acceptable for various demands. We analyzed the quality of tap water, mineral water, purified tap water using home tap water purifier. And we researched on the sense of the public complaint over the tap water. We proposed several items relating to the comfortableness of water quality and the target value. Also we presented a case of water supply system for purity and the points at problem The items and target value are as follows 1. turbidity : not more than 1 degree 2. dry residue : $30~200{\;}mg/{\ell}$ 3. hardness : $10~100mg/{\ell}$ 4. free carbon dioxide : not more than $20mg/{\ell}$ 5. $KMnO_{4}$ consumption not more than $3mg/{\ell}$ 6. odor threshold not abnormal 7. residual chlorine : not more than $0.4mg/{\ell}$ 8. water temperature' not more than $20^{\circ}C$ 9. manganese : not more than $0.01mg/{\ell}$ 10. iron : not more than $0.02mg/{\ell}$ 11. aluminum : not more than $0.1mg/{\ell}$
Membrane processes are capable of removing much materials from water. The removal or rejection characteristics of a membrane is usually depend upon the nominal pore size or MWCO(molecular weight cut off). A membrane with a smaller nominal pore size or MWCO should be capable of removing smaller contaminants from water. A series of experiments was performed to investigate the separation characteristics of membrane processes which consisted of microfiltration(MF) and nanofiltration(NF). To evaluate removal efficiencies of some pollutants such as the consumption of $KMnO_4$, THMFP, NH3-N, Fe, Mn, and pesticides, source water sampled from the Kum river was treated by the those membrane processes. Also, the results of experiments were compared with those of conventional water treatment processes. By two types of the membrane process, total removal efficiency of $KMnO_4$ consumed, THMEP, and $NH_3-N$ were 91.0%, 84.3%, and 85.5%, respectively and those processes were efficient in pesticides removal as well. Most of the effluents satisfied the Korean standard of drinking water quality continuously in the experimental periods. However, NF was needed for producing the safe drinking water in case of treating the raw water contaminated with Mn since removal efficiency of MF was not high enough. On the basis of the experimental results, it was suggested that NF could be applied to remove not only $NH_3-N$ but THMFP even without pre-chlorination.
This research is conducted to develop predictable method of real scale nanofiltration treatability with small scale nanofiltration experiments. As a result of comparing calculated values with measured values, they are in a good agreement for the concentrations in filtered water and concentrated water. The results of that are not affected by change of system recovery from 20% to 95%. The proposed method is produced using constant recovery of elements, that is, no considering the pressure change. we can predict filtrated flux and contaminant concentrations with the method. The method has the following steps. (1) Calculate recovery of each element with water quality level after fixing recovery elements, (2) Predict system recovery with recovery of elements in 1, 2, 3, and 4 banks, (3) Run small scale nanofiltration experiments in predicted water quality and (4) Simulate large scale nanofiltration system for forecasting actual water quality. As the cost for nanofiltration pretest will reduced if we use the proposed method, it will be a promising method for introducing nanofiltration to supply safe drinking water.
Built-out issue of copper processing appearing recently in the Paldang watershed is a critical problem to deteriorate the basic framework of national water management policy as well as to be simply a copper-related problem. Up to now, Korea government has invested hard and relevant upstream areas have been victimized readily in a variety of field to comply its goal of 'Safe Water Supply'. Because of the reason, the desirable water quality level of the Paldang watershed has been maintained regardless of its dense population. Paldang drinking water management policy is based on residents' understanding which is considered as a 'social capital'. The issue raised in the aspect of water quality management policy should be reviewed on the basis of the 'social capital' concept. One regarding semiconductor industry as a potential industry to export many products in 10 years insists that the industry not be a simple private business but be a prominent part for national competitiveness. There is no doubt about this opinion. However, a nation should support environmental right-to-life of its people prior to any other tasks. In other words, it is really risky to give up people's right due to economic benefits. Therefore, it should not happen to trade 'life', the dignity of man, with national competitiveness which is likely to be preferred in these days. In addition, coherent policy not to destroy 'social capital' promoting Paldang drinking water resource management policy should be maintained.
Purpose: Retention and infiltration of small and frequently-occurring rainfall by LID facilities account for a large proportion of the annual precipitation volume. Based on 4 standard facilities such as Porous Pavement, Infiltration Trench, Cylindrical Infiltration Well, Rectangular Infiltration Well by Seoul Metropolitan Handbook of the Prior Consultation for LID. The total retention volume of each facility was calculated according to the type and size. The Purpose of this study is to find out the quantitative relationship between Percentile Rainfall Event and Design Volume of Infiltration Facilities. Methode: For the estimation of Percentile Rainfall Event, Daily Precipitation of Seoul from 2005 to 2014 was sorted ascending and the distribution of percentile was estimated by PERCENTILE spreadsheet function. The managed Rainfall Depth and Percentile of each facility was calculated at the several sizes. In response to the rainwater charge volume of 5.5mm/hr by the Category "Private large site", the 3 types of facilities were planned for example. The calculated Rainfall Depth and Percentile were 54.4mm and 90% by the use of developed Calculation-Module based on the Spreadsheet program. Result: With this Module the existing Designed Infiltration volume which was introduced from Japan was simply converted to the Percentile-Rainfall-Event used in USA.
The purpose of this research is to estimate a safe environmental level of human exposure to thresholding-acting toxicants in drinking water and recommend the acceptable levels and management plans for maintaining good quality of drinking water' and protecting health hazard. This research has been funded as a national project for three years from 1992 to 1995. This study(the second year, 1993-1994) was conducted to monitor 39 species of noncarcinogenic chemicals such as volatile organic compounds(VOCs), polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbens(PAHs), pesticides and heavy metals of drinking water at some area in six cities of Korea, and evaluate health risk due to these chemicals through four main steps (hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment and risk characterization) of risk assessment in drinking water. In hazard identification, 39 species of non-carcinogenic chemicals were identified by the US EPA classification system. In the step of exposure assessment, sampling of tap water from the public water supply system had been conducted from 1993 to 1994, and 39 chemicals were analyzed. Inclose-response assessment for non-carcinogens, reference doses(RfD) and lifetime health advisories(HAs) of lifetime acceptable levels were calculated. In risk characterization of detected chemicals, the hazard quotients of noncarcinogens were less than one except those of manganese and iron in D city.
