This paper presents a new algorithm called the adaptive logarithmic increase and adaptive decrease algorithm (A-LIAD), which mainly addresses the Round-Trip Time (RTT) fairness problem in satellite networks with a very high propagation delay as an alternative to the current TCP congestion control algorithm. We defined a new increasing function in the fashion of a logarithm depending on the increasing factor ${\alpha}$, which is different from the other logarithmic increase algorithm adopting a fixed value of ${\alpha}$ = 2 leading to a binary increase. In A-LIAD, the ${\alpha}$ value is derived in the RTT function through the analysis. With the modification of the increasing function applied for the congestion avoidance phase, a hybrid scheme is also presented for the slow start phase. From this hybrid scheme, we can avoid an overshooting problem during a slow start phase even without a SACK option. To verify the feasibility of the algorithm for deployment in a high-speed and long-distance network, several aspects are evaluated through an NS-2 simulation. We performed simulations for intra- and interfairness as well as utilization in different conditions of varying RTT, bandwidth, and PER. From these simulations, we showed that although A-LIAD is not the best in all aspects, it provides a competitive performance in almost all aspects, especially in the start-up and packet loss impact, and thus can be an alternative TCP congestion control algorithm for high BDP networks including a satellite network.

Transmission control protocol(TCP) widely used as a transport protocol in the Internet includes a loss recovery function that detects and recovers packet losses by retransmissions. The loss recovery function consists of the two algorithms; fast retransmit and fast recovery. There have been researches to avoid nonnecessary retransmission timeouts (RTOs), which leads to selective acknowledgement (SACK) option and limited transmit scheme that are standardized by IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). Recently, a method that covers the case in which a retransmitted packet is lost again has been propsed. The method, however, is not proved in terms of the additive increase multiplicative decrease (AIMD) principle of TCP congestion control. In this paper, therefore, we analyzed the method in terms of the principle by ns-simulations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the cooking process of red beans used to prepare Bab (cooked rice) in cooking books published from late 19th century to the present. There are 3 different types of Bab that use red beans; Jungdeungbab, Patbab and Patsura, and cooking process vary between different cooking books. For making Jungdeungbab, one method is to cook the red beans in the water first, and then only the water, after draining the cooked red beans, is used to cook rice. The other method is to smash the cooked red beans and collect the water that passes through the smashed red beans to cook the rice. For Patbab, 2 cooking methods were found. One is to cook the whole red beans first and then to add them to the rice for cooking. Another method is to break the red beans into two pieces and mix them with rice and cook them together. Patsura is the red bean used to prepare the Bab offered to Kings during the Chosun dynasty(1392~1910). The cooking process of Patsura is similar to both Jundeungbab and Patbab. In Ijogungjeongyoritonggo(1957), the cooking method of Patsura is similar to that of Patbab; breaking red beans into two pieces and then mixing them with rice and cooking them together. Another method, which is similar to Jungdeungbab, is found in Ijogungjeongyoritonggo(1957) and Hangukyoribaekguasajeon(1976). In Ijogungjeongyoritonggo(1957), the cooking method is to cook the red beans first and then squeeze them after putting them into a sack and then using the extract to cook rice. In Hangukyoribaekguasajeon(1976), the red bean is prepared by first cooking red beans in water, and then only the water, after draining the cooked red bean, is used to cook rice. In further studies, the cooking procedures used in the previous period of the late 19th century should be examined.

The device for intervertebral assisted motion (DIAM) is a dynamic implant that consists of a silicone bumper enveloped by a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber sack. Silicone and PET were used because of their biological inertness, but repetitive motion of the spine can cause wear on the implant nonetheless. The purpose of this study is to report a case of foreign body reaction (FBR) against a DIAM. A 72-year-old female patient presented with lower back pain and both legs radiating pain. She had undergone DIAM implantation at L4-5 for spinal stenosis 5 years previously. The intervertebral disc space of L4-5, where the DIAM was inserted, had collapsed and degenerative scoliosis had developed due to left-side collapse. MRI showed L3-4 thecal sac compression and left L4-5 foraminal stenosis. The patient underwent removal of the DIAM and instrumented fusion from L3 to L5. During surgery, fluid and granulation tissue were evident around the DIAM. Histopathology showed scattered wear debris from the DIAM causing chronic inflammation due to the resulting FBR. A FBR due to wear debris of a DIAM can induce a hypersensitivity reaction and bone resorption around the implant, causing it to loosen.
Networks often evolve to provide a host with multiple access points to the Internet. In this paper, we propose a transport layer load distribution mechanism utilizing the multiple network interfaces simultaneously. We specifically propose an extension of Stream Control Transmission Protoco1 (SCTP) to have load sharing over multiple network interfaces. We named the particular service provided by the Proposed load sharing mechanism to be LS (Load Sharing) mode service. LS mode service is based on the following four key elements: (i) the separation of flow control and congestion control, (ii) congestion window based striping, (iii) redundant packet retransmission for fast packet loss recovery, (iv) a novel mechanism to keep track of the receiver window size with the SACKS even if they arrive out-of-order. Through simulations, it is shown that the proposed LS mode service can aggregate the bandwidth of multiple paths almost ideally despite of the disparity in their bandwidth. When a path with a delay of 100% greater is utilized as the second path, the throughput is enhanced about 20%.

The number of people suffering from renal disease increases every year. One of the most common treatments (clinical care options) for renal diseases is hemodialysis. However it takes a long time and has a high cost. Therefore, the importance of artificial kidney research has risen. Filtering creatinine from blood is one of the prime renal functions. Thus, we designed a novel two channel microfluidic chip focused on that function. In order to bond the individual polydimethylsiloxane layers, we have developed a housing system using acrylic plastic frame. This method has significant advantages in changing filter membranes. We use anodic aluminum oxide for the filter membrane. We analyzed the difference in the absorbance values for various creatinine concentrations using the Jaffe reaction. For the purpose of acquiring a standard equation to quantify the creatinine concentration, we interpolated the measured data and confirmed the concentration of the filtered solution. Through this experiment, we determined how the filtration efficiency depended on the flow rate and creatinine concentration.

Sugar spheres loaded with melatonin (MT) were coated with $Aquacoat^{\circledR}$ to control the release rate of MT over 8 hours. A zero-order release pattern over 8 hours was obtained with 20% coating on 8-10 mesh beads in USP basket dissolution studies. MT in 20% coated beads was quite stable at room temperature with less than 5% MT degraded during 6 months' storage. Dissolution profiles were also unchanged after 6 months. An oral preparation containing MT-loaded uncoated beads for immediate release and 20% coated beads with $Aquacoat^{\circledR}$ for controlled release over 8 hours was evaluated in six human subjects. When total 0.5 mg MT as low dose (immediate release portion of MT, 0.1 mg) was administered to four subjects, average peak plasma MT concentration was reached at about 600 pg/ml and maintained at about 10 pg/ml over 8 hours. Plasma MT concentration-time profiles were similar in shape to computer-simulated profiles. However, maximal plasma MT concentrations were three times greater compared to computer simulated curve. These results suggest that MT dose, ratio of immediate and controlled release MT, and pharmacokinetic parameters selected are adjusted to mimic endogenous MT concentration-time curve. In another study, 0.2 mg MT having 10% of immediate release portion and 80% controlled release portion produced plasma MT concentration-time curve which is more similar to endogenous profiles. A low bioavailability (<20%) may result from extensive first pass metabolism and remaining amounts of MT from controlled beads. A good correlation between plasma MT concentration and urinary excretion rate of 6-sulphatoxymelatonin (6-STMT), a major metabolite of MT was observed. As plasma MT concentration increased, urinary excretion rate of 6-STMT increased concomitantly. The linear relation between plasma MT and urinary excretion rate of 6-STMT was statistically significant. This result suggests that urinary 6-STMT may be used as an index of circadian rhythms of MT in humans.
Retarding effects of the dietary fibers from persimmon peels (PTDF ; total dietary fibers, PIDF ; insoluble dietary fibers, PSDF ; soluble dietary fibers) and dried jujubes (JTDF ; total dietary fibers, JIDF ; insoluble dietary fibers, JSDF ; soluble dietary fibers) on glucose, bile acid and cadmium transport were evaluated by in vitro dialysis sack method. These effects were compared with those of commerical citrus pectin, CM-cellulose (CMC) and $\alpha$-cellulose. Yields of PTDF, PIDF and PSDF on wet weight basis were 14.04% , 11.61%, 1.76%, respectively, and those from dried jujubes were 14.80%, 9.98% and 2.80%, respectively. The amount of soluble fibers in JTDF was higher than PTDF. Soluble fibers had the retarding effects on glucose transport but insoluble fibers did not have. CM-cellulose showed the greatest retarding effect, which was followed by citrus pectin and JSDF. Among the soluble fibers, PSDF had the lowest retardig effect. Retarding effect of TDF was dependent upon the amount of SDF in TDF. Regarding bile acid dialysis , insoluble dietary fibers as well as soluble dietary fibers showed the retarding effects, among which JSDF had the greatest retarding effects, among which JSDF had the greatest retarding effect, followed by citrus pectin. Among the extracted fibers, dietary fibers from dried jujubes were more effective than these from persimmon peels, and SDF seemed to show higher retarding effects than IDF and TDF. On cadmium transport retardation , all dietary fibers except $\alpha$-cellulose had the retarding effects and PSDF showed the greatest effect which was followed by PIDF and CMC, The extracted fibers showed higher retarding effect on Cd transport than glucose and bile acid transport, and dietary fibers from persimmon peels showed higher retarding effects than those from dried jujubes.

There have been several efforts to avoid unnecessary retransmission timeouts (RTOs), which is the main cause for TCP throughput degradation. Unnecessary RTOs can be classified into three groups according to their cause. RTOs due to multiple packet losses in the same window for TCP Reno, the most prevalent TCP version, can be avoided by TCP NewReno or using selective acknowledgement (SACK) option. RTOs occurring when a packet is lost in a window that is not large enough to trigger fast retransmit can be avoided by using the Limited Transmit algorithm. In this Paper, we comparatively analyze these schemes to cope with unnecessary RTOs by numerical analysis and simulations. On the basis of the results in this paper, TCP performance can be quantitatively predicted from the aspect of loss recovery probability. Considering that overall performance of TCP is largely dependent upon the loss recovery performance, the results shown in this paper are of great importance.

Extractives of garlic (Allium scorodorpasum) and green pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) were used to prevent and exterminate rice weevils which contaminate stored rice. The extractives exhibited great efficacy against Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum by annihilating all the weevils contained in a bottle. Furthermore, kraft paper coated by 5% extractives also displayed good effectiveness against the rice weevils. When rice weevils were stored with rice in a sack made of extractives-coated kraft paper, the number of living insects was sharply decreased according to elapsed time. In particular, 1,4-benzoquinone, which is very harmful to human, was detected from rice contaminated by Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum through the analysis of GC/MS.
