Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted much attention as a promising material for transparent conducting films (TCFs), due to their superior electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength, and complete flexibility as well as their one-dimensional morphological features of extremely high length-to-diameter ratios. This study investigated three kinds of SWCNTs with different purities: as-produced SWCNTs (AP-SWCNTs), thermally purified SWCNTs (TH-SWCNTs), thermally and acid purified SWCNTs (TA-SWCNTs). The purity of each SWCNT sample was assessed by considering absorption peaks in the semiconducting ($S_{22}$) and metallic ($M_{11}$) tubes with UV-Vis NIR spectroscopy and a metal content with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The purity increased as proceeding the purification stages from the AP-SWCNTs through the thermal purification to the acid purification. The samples containing different contents of SWCNTs were dispersed in water using sodium dodecyl benzensulfate (SDBS). Aqueous suspensions of different purities of SWCNTs were prepared to have similar absorbances in UV-Vis absorption measurements so that one can make the TCFs possess similar optical transmittances irrespective of the SWCNT purity. Transparent conductive SWCNT networks were formed by spraying an SWCNT suspension onto a poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) substrate. As expected, the TCFs fabricated with AP-SWCNTs showed very high sheet resistances. Interestingly, the TH-SWCNTs gave lower sheet resistances to the TFCs than the TA-SWCNTs although the latter was of higher purity in the SWCNT content than the former. The TA-SWCNTs would be shortened in length and be more bundled by the acid purification, relative to the TH-SWCNTs. For both purified (TH, TA) samples, the subsequent nitric acid ($HNO_3$) treatment greatly lowered the sheet resistances of the TCFs, but almost eliminated the difference of sheet resistances between them. This seems to be because the electrical conductivity increased not only due to further removal of surfactants but also due to p-type doping upon the acid treatment. The doping effect was likely to overwhelm the effect of surfactant removal. Although the nitric acid treatment resulted in the similar. electrical properties to the two samples, the TCFs of TH-SWCNTs showed much lower sheet resistances than those of the TA-SWCNTs prior to the acid treatment.
Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can be modified to produce a new concept of hybrid materials by introducing atoms or molecules inside their cylindrical empty space. Such an endohedral doping of the SWCNTs is expected to decisively alter their electronic transport and mechanical properties, In this study, we purified SWCNTs by three-step purification processes and formed the peapod structure by introducing $C_{60}$ fullerenes inside the SWCNTs. $C_{60}$ molecules were observed to be regularly arranged by transmission electron microscopy. In Raman spectra, the radial breathing mode (RBM) rather than the other modes was significantly affected by the endohedral injection of $C_{60}$. The RBM intensity was more greatly reduced in the large-diameter SWCNTs than the small-diameter ones, Raman spectroscopy is expected to be a key technique for analyzing $C_{60}$-encapsulated SWCNTs.
In this paper, the nonlocal integral Timoshenko beam model is employed to study the free vibration characteristics of singled walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) including the thermal effect. Based on the nonlocal continuum theory, the governing equations of motion are formulated by considering thermal effect. The influences of small scale parameter, the chirality of SWCNTs, the vibrational mode number, the aspect ratio of SWCNTs and temperature changes on the thermal vibration properties of single-walled nanotubes are examined and discussed. Results indicate significant dependence of natural frequencies on the nonlocal parameter, the temperature change, the aspect ratio and the chirality of SWCNTs. This work should be useful reference for the application and the design of nanoelectronics and nanoelectromechanical devices that make use of the thermal vibration properties of SWCNTs.

This paper addresses the effect of dopants on the electronic properties of zigzag (8, 0) semiconducting single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), using extended Hückel theory combined with nonequilibrium Green’s function formalism. Through appropriate dopant concentrations, the electronic properties of SWCNTs can be modified. Within this context, we present our ongoing investigation on (8, 0) SWCNTs doped with nitrogen. Quantum confinement effects on the electronic properties of the SWCNTs have also been investigated. The obtained results reveal that the electronic properties of SWCNTs are strongly dependent on the dopant concentration and modification of electronic structures by hydrogen confinement.
This research investigates the effect of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) dimensions in terms of diameter on the mechanical properties (longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus) of the simulated nanocomposites by molecular dynamics (MDs) method. MDs utilized to create nanocomposite models consisting of five case studies of SWCNTs with different chiralities (5, 0), (10, 0), (15, 0), (20, 0) and (25, 0) as the reinforcement and using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as the common matrix. The results show that with increasing of SWCNTs diameter, the mechanical and physical properties increase. It is important that with the increasing of SWCNTs diameter, density, longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus, shear modulus, poisson's ratio, and bulk modulus of simulated nanocomposite from (5, 0) to (25, 0) approximately becomes 1.54, 3, 2, 1.43, 1.11 and 1.75 times more than (5, 0), respectively. Then to validate the results, the stiffness matrix is obtained by Materials studio software.
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with few defects and very small amount of amorphous carbon coating have been synthesized by catalytic decomposition of methane in $H_2$ over well-dispersed metal particles supported on MgO. The yield of SWCNTs was estimated to be 88.5% and the purities of SWCNTs thus obtained were more than 90%. Peak of the radial breathing mode in the Raman spectrum demonstrated that the diameters of synthesized CNTs are in the range 0.4-2.0 nm. Our results also indicated that MgO support materials are useful to a large-scale synthesis of high-quality SWCNTs. Increasing temperature could remarkably increase the yield and also improve the quality of SWCNTs from catalytic decomposition of methane. The morphologies and microstructures of the synthesized carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD).
We suggest a CNT-based gas sensor for breath alcohol measurement. The sensor was composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) thin film on flexible PES (polyethersulfone) substrate, and the SWCNTs thin film was formed by multiple spray-coating with SWCNTs solution which was well-dispersed, highly controlled and functionalized in ethanol solvent. In this work, three types of SWCNTs thin films were deposited with changes in the number of spray-coatings to 20, 40 and 60 times in order to compare electrical response properties of the SWCNTs thin films. from the fabricated sensors, conductance and capacitance responses were measured and discussed. Alcohol gas sensors have been commercialized widely as gauge for breath alcohol measurement which is applicable to checking whether car drivers are drinking-driving or not. Our alcohol gas sensors showed good sensitivity and linearity even at room temperature.
The influence of the water vapor on the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was investigated. SWCNTs were synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of acetylene over Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst with injection of water vapor. The morphologies and structures of the water-assisted SWCNTs were investigated according to the growth conditions such as water vapor concentrations, flow rate of the gas, furnace temperature, and growth time. Water-assisted SWCNTs exhibited large bundle morphological features with well-alignment of each CNT, while SWCNTs synthesized in the absence of water vapor showed entangled CNT with the random orientation. We also found that the diameter of the SWCNT bundle could be controlled by the growth condition. In our optimal growth condition, the product yield and the purity were 300 wt. % and 75%, which were 7.5 and 2.5 times higher than those of SWCNTs synthesized without water vapor, respectively. More detail discussion will be offered at the poster presentation.

We developed a simple and effective purification method to obtain high-purity single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with low surface damage. The purification process consists of oxidization at $430^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in a furnace system of air atmosphere and homogenization in dilute hydrochloric acid solution for extremely short time. The role of homogenizer was examined during purification process in terms of purity and quality of purified SWCNTs. High-purity and low surface damage of SWCNT products was obtained using homogenizer which was operated at 8500 rpm for 10 min in the environment of 7 % HCI solution. From XRD spectra, we observed that metal catalysts were thoroughly removed. Raman spectra showed that the intensity values of crystallization ($I_{G}/I_{D}$) of purified SWCNTs were very similar with that of pristine SWCNTs. Moreover, the structure damage of purified SWCNTs was hard to find from electron microscopy. Consequently, homogenizing, which is a quick and simple manner, can be promising method for obtaining final SWCNTs with clearly high purity and crystallinity.
