  • The effects of surface color and morphology on the mar behaviors of urethane-acrylate coated surfaces were examined. The superiority of mar resistance was observed in the order of white, red and black-colored samples. This can be explained by a contrast effect. In other words, in case of black colored sample, it takes place the defuse reflection of the incident light on the damaged region where mar damage exerts, leading to whitening phenomenon. Therefore, the damaged region is easily recognized by contrasting the black background. On the other hand, it is difficult for the white-colored sample to perceive the mar-damaged area by the white background acting as protecting coloration. As the gloss of urethane-acrylate coated surface increases, it is observed that there is an increase in the number of carbonyl (-C=O) function group, amount of ethylene and silica. The enhancements of surface rigidity by adding the silica particles and formation of carbonyl function groups by the surface oxidation lead to the increase in mar resistance, while the increase of polyethylene wax is responsible for the improved gloss and smooth-faced surface. Based on the above findings, technical approaches leading the improvement of mar resistance of the urethane-acrylate coated surface are discussed.

  • The formation and thermal desorption behaviors of octanethiol (OT) SAMs on single crystalline Au (111) and polycrystalline Au, Ag, and Cu substrates were examined by X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), and contact angle (CA) measurements. XPS and CA measurements revealed that the adsorption of octanethiol (OT) molecules on these metals led to the formation of chemisorbed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Three main desorption fragments for dioctyl disulfide (C8SSC8+, dimer), octanethiolate (C8S+), and octanethiol (C8SH+) were monitored using TDS to understand the effects of surface morphology and the nature of metal substrates on the thermal desorption behavior of alkanethiols. TDS measurements showed that a sharp dimer peak with a very strong intensity on single crystalline Au (111) surface was dominantly observed at 370 K, whereas a broad peak on the polycrystalline Au surface was observed at 405 K. On the other hand, desorption behaviors of octanethiolates and octanethiols were quite similar. We concluded that substrate morphology strongly affects the dimerization process of alkanethiolates on Au surfaces. We also found that desorption intensity of the dimer is in the order of Au>>Ag>Cu, suggesting that the dimerization process occurs efficiently when the sulfur-metal bond has a more covalent character (Au) rather than an ionic character (Ag and Cu).

  • A variety of titanium (Ti) and its alloys are used in the clinical procedures of bone regeneration for periodontal and dental implant therapies. This study was performed to determine the effect of different surface dental implant materials on biologic responses of a MG-63 human osteoblast-like cell line. MG-63 cells were cultured on Ti coated with hydroxyapatite (HA), calcium metaphosphate (CMP), anodized (A), which compared with non-coated Ti (control). The appearances of surface of dental implant materials and the morphology of these cells were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The gene expression profiles of MG-63 cells cultured on Ti were examined by human cDNA microarray (1,152 elements). The expression of several genes was up- and down-regulated by different surfaces of dental implant materials. Interesting, the genes correlated with cellular adhesion and extra cellular matrix (ECM) formation were enhanced, in accordance surface morphology of the dental implant materials used.

  • Mo-based thin films are frequently used as back electrode materials because of their low resistivity and high crystallinity in CIGS chalcopyrite solar cells. Mo:Na/Mo bilayer thin films with $1{\mu}m$ thickness were deposited on soda lime glass by varying the thickness of each layer using dc-magnetron sputtering. The effects of the Mo:Na layer on morphology and electrical property in terms of resistivity were systematically investigated. The resistivity increased from $159{\mu}{\Omega}cm$ to $944{\mu}{\Omega}cm$; this seemed to be caused by increased surface defects and low crystallinity as the thickness of Mo:Na layer increased from 100 nm to 500 nm. The surface morphologies of the Mo thin films changed from a somewhat coarse fibrous structures to irregular and fine celled structures with increased surface cracks along the cell boundaries as the thickness of Mo:Na layer increased. Na contents varied drastically from 0.03 % to 0.52 % according to the variation of Mo:Na layer thickness. The change in Na content may be ascribed to changes in surface morphology and crystallinity of the thin films.

  • For development of dyeability, the cotton fabric was dyed repeatedly with persimmon juice by padding mangle. We evaluated the mechanical properties and hand value by Kawabata Evaluation System, and observed the change of surface morphology. The results obtained from this study were as follows. With the increase of repeating padding times of dyeing, the linearity of load-extension curve and tensile energy per unit length of the cotton fabric were increased, but the tensile resilience of fabric was decreased. The value of shear stiffness and shear hysteresis were increased. Also compression resilience and linearity of compression thickness curve were increased. The cotton fabric dyed with persimmon juice had shown the thickness and weight increase as the number of padding increase. As repeating times of dyeing with persimmon juice were increased, among the 6 hand values, the item of stiffness, anti-drape stiffness, fullness and softness were increased, while flexibility with soft feeling and crispness were greatly decreased. The amount of coated persimmon juice on the surface of the fabric was gradually increased as the padding times of dyeing. And cotton fabrics were dyed evenly with persimmon juice by padding mangle.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of additives and composition on copper surface morphology and mechanical characteristics by copper electrodeposition. Additives such as hydroxy ethyl cellulose(HEC), chloride ion were used in this study. Electrochemical experiments allied to SEM, XRD, AFM and four- point probe were performed to characterize the morphology and mechanical characters of copper in the presence of additives. Among various electrodeposition conditions, the minimum surface roughness of copper foil was obtained when electrodeposited at the current density of 200 mA/$cm^2$ for 68 seconds with 2 ppm of HEC. The minimum value of surface roughness(Rms) was 107.6 nm. It is copper foil is good for electromigration inhibition due to preferential crystal growth of Cu (111) deposited in the electrolyte containing chloride ions(10 ppm) and HEC(1 ppm).

  • The effect of trace metallic additives of Al-Fe-X on microstructure, glossiness and hardness of Zn electrodeposits was investigated by using sulfate bath. The preferred orientation of Zn deposits with Al-Fe additives was (10 l)(l:3,4,2), while that of Zn deposits with Al-Fe-X(Ni,Co) additives was either (002) or (002)+(103)ㆍ(104) mixed orientation. The preferred orientation of Zn deposits with Al-Fe-Cr additives changed from (002)+(10 l) to (10 l) orientation with increasing amount of Al additive. The surface morphology of the Zn deposits was closely related to the preferred orientation of the deposits. The glossiness of Zn deposits with Al-Fe additives increased in comparison with that of pure Zn deposit. That of the Zn deposits with Al-Fe-X additives was related to the morphology of the deposits and changed according to type of additives. The hardness of Zn deposits with Al-Fe-X(Ni,Co,Cr) additives was noticeably higher than that of Zn deposits with Al-Fe additives.

  • This study is a preliminary investigation of the influence of surface characteristics of substrates on detergency of particulate soil. The surface of PET film was modified with NaOH and NaOH+ethylene diamine on different times. The surface morphology of the film was scanned by AFM and surface energies were calculated from measured contact angles between several solutions and film based on the geometric mean and a Lewis acid base method. The surface morphology of PET film treated with NaOH and NaOH+ethylene diamine became more etched, and the surface area, surface roughness and the coefficient of friction of film increased with treatment of NaOH and NaOH+ethylene diamine. The contact angle of film treated with NaOH and NaOH+ethylene diamine decreased in water and surfactant solution; in addition, the surface energy increased was largely attributed to the increased portion on the polar surface energy of film. However, the effect of the diamine addition to the NaOH treatment solution on surface characteristics of PET film was insignificant.

  • Optimizing morphology of the front surface with three dimensional structures (3D) in solar cell is essential element for not only effectivelight harvesting but also carrier collection and separation without the cost burden in process. We designed a three-dimensionally ordered front surface with wet chemical etching. Wet chemical etching is a proper way to have three dimensional structures. The method efficiently transmits the incident light at the front surface to a Si absorber and has competitive price in manufacturing when comparing with reactive ion etching (RIE) to have three dimensional structures. This indicates that optimized front surface with three dimensional structures by wet chemical etching will bring effective light management in solar cells.

  • Transparent conductive oxides (TCO) are necessary as front electrode for most thin film solar cell. In our paper, transparent conducting aluminum-doped Zinc oxide films (ZnO:Al) were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering on glass (Corning 1737) substrate as a variation of the deposition condition. After deposition, the smooth ZnO:Al films were etched in diluted HCl (0.5%) to examine the electrical and surface morphology Properties as a variation of the time. The most important deposition condition of surface-textured ZnO films by chemical etching is the processing pressure and the substrate temperature. In low pressures (0.9 mTorr) and high substrate temperatures ($\leq$30$0^{\circ}C$), the surface morphology of films exhibits a more dense and compact film structure with effective light-trapping to apply the silicon thin film solar cells.
