Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are becoming increasingly capable in terms of processing power. Although they are already used in computer vision, no comparable measurement experiments of the popular feature extraction algorithm have been made yet. That is, local feature descriptors are widely used in many computer vision applications, and recently various methods have been proposed. While there are many evaluations have focused on various aspects of local features, matching accuracy, however there are no comparisons considering on speed trade-offs of recent descriptors such as ORB, FAST and BRISK. In this paper, we try to provide a performance evaluation of feature descriptors, and compare their matching precision and speed in KD-Tree setup with efficient computation of Hamming distance. The experimental results show that the recently proposed real valued descriptors such as ORB and FAST outperform state-of-the-art descriptors such SIFT and SURF in both, speed-up efficiency and precision/recall.

The paper presents a novel algorithm for face and iris detection with the application for driver iris monitoring. The proposed algorithm consists of the following major steps: Skin-color segmentation, facial features segmentation, and iris positioning. For the skin-segmentation we applied a multi-layer perceptron to approximate the statistical probability of certain skin-colors, and filter out those with low probabilities. The next step segments the face region into the following categories: eye, mouth, eye brow, and remaining facial regions. For this purpose we propose a novel segmentation technique based on estimation of facial class probability density functions (PDF). Each facial class PDF is estimated on the basis of salient features extracted from a corresponding facial image region. Then pixels are classified according to the highest probability selected from four estimated PDFs. The final step applies the circular Hough transform to the detected eye regions to extract the position and radius of the iris. We tested our system on two data sets. The first one is obtained from the Web and contains faces under different illuminations. The second dataset was collected by us. It contains images obtained from video sequences recorded by a CCD camera while a driver was driving a car. The experimental results are presented, showing high detection rates.

With the assumption of the diffusion dominated flow, a numerical model has been developed for undertow and turbulence structure under the breaking wave by using the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. Undertow is a strong mean current which moves seqwards below the level of wave trough in the surf zone. The turbulence, generated by wave breaking in the roller, spreads and dissipates downwards. The governing equations are composed of the equation of motion with the period-averaged shear stress due to waves; $textsc{k}$- and $\varepsilon$-equations with the turbulence energy Production due to wave breaking. They are discretised by the three-level fully implicit scheme, which can be solved by using Thomas algorithm. The model gives good agreements with measurements except for the station that is closest to the breaking point.

A feature-based image recognition method, using features of an object, can be performed faster than a template matching technique. Invariant feature-based panoramic image generation, an application of image recognition, requires large amount of time to match features between two images. This paper proposes a speed-up method of feature matching using feature strength information. Our algorithm extracts features in images, computes their feature strength information, and selects strong features points which are used to match the selected features. The strong features can be referred to as meaningful ones than the weak features. In the experiments, it was shown that our method speeded up over 40% of processing time than the technique without using feature strength information.

With the remarkable growth in rich media in recent years, people are increasingly exposed to visual information from the environment. Visual information continues to play a vital role in rich media because people's real interests lie in dynamic information. This paper proposes a novel discrete dynamic swarm optimization (DDSO) algorithm for video object tracking using invariant features. The proposed approach is designed to track objects more robustly than other traditional algorithms in terms of illumination changes, background noise, and occlusions. DDSO is integrated with a matching procedure to eliminate inappropriate feature points geographically. The proposed novel fitness function can aid in excluding the influence of some noisy mismatched feature points. The test results showed that our approach can overcome changes in illumination, background noise, and occlusions more effectively than other traditional methods, including color-tracking and invariant feature-tracking methods.

This paper proposes a novel formation algorithm of identical robots based on object tracking method using omni-directional images obtained through fisheye lenses which are mounted on the robots. Conventional formation methods of multi-robots often use stereo vision system or vision system with reflector instead of general purpose camera which has small angle of view to enlarge view angle of camera. In addition, to make up the lack of image information on the environment, robots share the information on their positions through communication. The proposed system estimates the region of robots using SURF in fisheye images that have $360^{\circ}$ of image information without merging images. The whole system controls formation of robots based on moving directions and velocities of robots which can be obtained by applying Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow Estimation for the estimated region of robots. We confirmed the reliability of the proposed formation control strategy for multi-robots through both simulation and experiment.

The accuracy of an augmented reality (AR) application is highly dependent on the resolution of the object's image and the device's computational processing capability. Naturally, a mobile smart device equipped with a high-resolution camera becomes the best platform for portable AR services. AR applications require significant energy consumption and very fast response time, which are big burdens to the smart device. However, there are very few ways to overcome these burdens. Computation offloading via mobile cloud computing has the potential to provide energy savings and enhance the performance of applications executed on smart devices. Therefore, in this paper, adaptive mobile computation offloading of mobile AR applications is considered in order to determine optimal offloading points that satisfy the required quality of experience (QoE) while consuming minimum energy of the smart device. AR feature extraction based on SURF algorithm is partitioned into sub-stages in order to determine the optimal AR cloud computational offloading point based on conditions of the smart device, wireless and wired networks, and AR service cloud servers. Tradeoffs in energy savings and processing time are explored also taking network congestion and server load conditions into account.
Image stitching is a process of combining two or more images with overlapping area to create a panorama of input images, which is considered as an active research area in computer vision, especially in the field of augmented reality with 360 degree images. Image stitching techniques can be categorized into two general approaches: direct and feature based techniques. Direct techniques compare all the pixel intensities of the images with each other, while feature based approaches aim to determine a relationship between the images through distinct features extracted from the images. This paper proposes a novel image stitching method based on feature pixels with approximated clustering filter. When the features are extracted from input images, we calculate a meaning of the minutiae, and apply an effective feature extraction algorithm to improve the processing time. With the evaluation of the results, the proposed method is corresponding accurate and effective, compared to the previous approaches.

With the popularity of sensor-rich environments, smartphones have become one of the major platforms for obtaining and sharing information. Since it is difficult to utilize GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) inside the area with many buildings, the localization of smartphone in this case is considered as a challenging task. To resolve problem of localization using smartphone a four step image-based localization method and procedure is proposed. To improve the localization accuracy of smartphone datasets, MMS (Mobile Mapping System) and Google Street View were utilized. In our approach first, the searching for candidate matching image is performed by the query image of smartphone's using GNSS observation. Second, the SURF (Speed-Up Robust Features) image matching between the smartphone image and reference dataset is done and the wrong matching points are eliminated. Third, the geometric transformation is performed using the matching points with 2D affine transformation. Finally, the smartphone location and attitude estimation are done by PnP (Perspective-n-Point) algorithm. The location of smartphone GNSS observation is improved from the original 10.204m to a mean error of 3.575m. The attitude estimation is lower than 25 degrees from the 92.4% of the adjsuted images with an average of 5.1973 degrees.

In this study, feature point detection and displacement measurement performance depending on feature extraction algorithms were compared and analyzed according to environmental changes and target types in the feature point-based displacement measurement algorithm. A three-story frame structure was designed for performance evaluation, and the displacement response of the structure was digitized into FHD (1920×1080) resolution. For performance analysis, the initial measurement distance was set to 10m, and increased up to 40m with an increment of 10m. During the experiments, illuminance was fixed to 450lux or 120lux. The artificial and natural targets mounted on the structure were set as regions of interest and used for feature point detection. Various feature detection algorithms were implemented for performance comparisons. As a result of the feature point detection performance analysis, the Shi-Tomasi corner and KAZE algorithm were found that they were robust to the target type, illuminance change, and increase in measurement distance. The displacement measurement accuracy using those two algorithms was also the highest. However, when using natural targets, the displacement measurement accuracy is lower than that of artificial targets. This indicated the limitation in extracting feature points as the resolution of the natural target decreased as the measurement distance increased.
