Development of Multi Forming Product Progressive Die for STS 304 Marine Part Sheet Metal (Part 1)

  • The progressive die are multiple operations performed by means of a die having above two stages, on the each of stages performs a different operation as the sheet metal passes through the die hole. In the field of design and making tool for press working, the progressive die for sheet metal (STS 304, thickness : 0.5mm) is a specific division. In order to prevent the defects, the optimum design of the production part, strip layout, die design, die making and tryout etc. are necessary. They require analysis of many kinds of important factors, I. e. theory and practice of metal press working and its phenomena, die structure, machining condition for die making, die materials, heat treatment of die components, know-how and so on. In this study, we designed and constructed a progressive die of multi-stage and performed try out. Out of these processes the die development could be taken for advance. Especially the result of tryout and its analysis become the characteristics of this paper (part 1 and part 2) that nothing might be ever seen before such as this type of research method on all the processes. In the part 1 of this study we treated die design mostly.

  • The electronic speckle pattern interferometer (ESPI) has been applied to many technical problems such as deformation and displacement measurement, strain visualization and surface roughness monitoring. In this study, we used an ESPI system based on the dual beam speckle interferometer method in order to measure in-plane displacement and vibration mode using the ESIP technique. This research was carried out for the purpose of applying the vibration analysis method employing Electro-Optic holographic interference technique to the vibration analysis of uniform rectangular cantilevers plate(SS400,STS304) with cantilevers span to breadth ratio of 150 by 75. And thickness of 1mm and 0.8mm respectively. We improved the ESPI technique in order to obtain the distribution of displacement component resolved in one direction through a CCD camera combined with an image processing system. To certify and to assess the accuracy in measuring by this ESPI, the results obtained with the speckle method and vibration mode analysis are to be compared with those results by Warbuton's Theoretical expression and vibration made in FEM analysis.

Low Temperature Effects on the Strength and Fracture Toughness of Membrane for LNG Storage Tank (LNG 저장탱크용 멤브레인재(STS 304강)의 강도 및 파괴인성에 미치는 저온효과)

  • Tensile and fracture toughness tests of the cold-rolled STS 304 steel plate for membrane material of LNG storage tank were performed at wide range of temperatures, 11 IK(boiling point of LNG), 153K , 193K and 293K(room temperature). Tensile strength significantly increases with a decrease in temperature, but the yield strength is relatively insensitive to temperature. Elongation at 193K abruptly decreases by 50% of that at 293K, and then decreases slightly in the temperature range of 193K to 111K. Strain hardening exponents at low temperatures are about four times as high as that at 293K. Elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_c$) and tearing modulus($T_{mat}$) tend to decrease with a decrease in temperature. The $J_c$ values are inversely related to effective yield strength in the temperature range of 111K to 293K. These phenomena result from a significant increase in the amount of transformed martensite in low temperature regions.

  • The magnetic polishing is the useful method to finish using magnetic power of a magnet. The time hasn't been that long since the magnetic polishing method was introduced to korea as one of precision polishing techniques. However, the reasons for not being spreaded widely are the magnetic polishing method don't have mediocrity for machine, the efficiency of magnet-abrasive is confined as a bad polishing, and there are not many researchers in this field. The mechanism of this R&D is dealing with the dynamic state of magnet-abrasive. This paper deals with mediocritizing magnetic polishing device into regular lathe and this experiment was conducted in order to get a best surface roughness with low cost. Beside the subsidiary experiment was performed using the mixed magnet-abrasive with general alumina, barium. This paper introduced the main reason for difficulty using this method in industrial field. It needs more continues research on it. This paper contains the result of experiment to acquire the best surface roughness, not using the high-cost polishing material in processing. The average diameters of magnet-abrasive are the particles of 150 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 250 $\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • Laser welding of dissimilar metals has been widely used to improve a wear resistance and a corrosion resistance of the industrial parts. The objective of this research works is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as the welding for SM45C and STS304 with CW Nd:YAG lasers. The bead-on-plate welding tests are carried out for several combinations of the experimental conditions. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the dissimilar welding, the welding quality of the cut section, stain-stress behavior and the hardness of the welded part are investigated. From the results of the investigation, it has been shown that the optimal welding condition without defects in the vicinity of the welded area and with a good welding qualify is 1600W of the laser power, 0.85m/min of welding speed and $4{\ell}/min$ of pressure for shielding gas.

  • Generally ferritic stainless steels are used for parts of exhaust system in commercial vehicle, because they have many advantages as low price and high corrosion resistant compared with austenitic stainless steels. Even though ferritic stainless steels have such various merits, austenitic stainless steels have been used to manufacture multi-layer bellows with complex geometry because of their high ductility. Recently, the mechanical properties of the ferritic stainless steels are getting improved and alternating austenitic stainless steel. In this paper, the possibility of mass production of multi-layer bellows made of ferritic stainless steel like MH1 and 443CT was studied. Tensile test, ridging test and corrosion test were carried out to observe material properties of STS304, MH1 and 443CT. Three types of prototype bellows were made using STS304, MH1 and 443CT stainless steels, and stiffness and fatigue tests were carried out to evaluate performance of the prototype bellows.

  • This paper reports mild steel(SPHC) and stainless steel(STS304) sheets commonly used for railroad cars or commercial vehicles such as in the automobile and shipbuilding industries. The sheets are used in these applications, which are mainly fabricated using the shielded metal arc welding(SMAW) of dissimilar materials. It also reports an interesting application of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy(LIBS) in order to determine the elemental composition diffusion of SPHC and STS304. Arc blow produced by magnetic force during the electric arc welding prevents the formation from a sound weldment. In particular, the mechanical properties of the joint are influenced by not only by geometrical and mechanical factors but also the welding conditions for the arc welded joint. Therefore, the mechanical properties and performance are evaluated by performing a physicochemical component analysis. And they increase in accordance with content of elements and microstructure in mild steel. As results, appropriate range for magnetic fields could be achieved. Therefore, the effect of magnetic force in a butt weld of mild steel plates was investigated by comparing to the measured data.

Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Membrane Material for LNG Storage Tank at Low Temperatures (저온하에서 LNG저장탱크용 멤브레인재(STS 304강)의 피로균열진전거동)

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior of the cold-rolled STS 304 steel developed for membrane material of LNG storage tank was examined experimentally at 293K, 153K and 111K. The fatigue crack growth rate(do/dN) tends to increase as the stress ratio (R) increases over the testing temperature when compared at the same stress intensity factor range($\Delta$K). The effect of R on do/dN is more explicit at low temperatures than at room temperature. The resistance of fatigue crack growth at low temperatures is higher compared with that at room temperature which is attributed to the extent of strain-induced martensitic transformation at the crack tip. The temperature dependence of fatigue crack growth resistance is gradually vanished with an increase in $\Delta$K which correlates with a decreasing fracture toughness with decreasing temperature. Fractographic examinations reveal that the differences of the fatigue crack growth characteristics between room and low temperature are mainly explained by the crack closure and the strengthening due to the martensitic transformation.
