Effect of Stretching Exercise on Depression, Pain, and Fatigue in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (신전운동이 루푸스 환자의 우울, 통증 및 피로에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of stretching exercise on depression, pain, and fatigue in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE). Methods: The study was designed as a non-equivalent control group pre-posttest quasi-experimental design. The patients with SLE who signed the consent form were conveniently assigned into two groups(11 experimental subjects and 10 control subjects). The subjects in the experimental group were participated in 6 weeks stretching exercise program for one and a half hours per session twice a week. The data were analyzed by using a SAS-pc+ 8.01 program. Results: 'The experimental group would have less depression scores than the control group' was supported (Z=2.2, p=.025). 'The experimental group would have less pain scores than the control group' was supported (Z=3.4, p=.001). 'The experimental group would have less fatigue scores than the control group' was supported (Z=-2.0, p=.041). With this study, we identified the stretching exercise program was effective on depression, pain, and fatigue of SLE patients. Conclusions: From above results, 6 weeks stretching exercise program could be an effective nursing intervention to reduce depression, pain, and fatigue in patients with SLE.

The Impact of Cervical Stretching Exercise and Cervical Traction on Cervical Pain and Muscle Activity among Patients with Cervical Hypolordosis

  • The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental clinical data for the treatment plan and rehabilitation of patients with cervical hypolordosis by comparing the cervical headache and muscle activity after cervical stretching exercise and cervical traction, which are generally applied to patients with cervical hypolordosis. The research subjects included 20 patients without gender division who were diagnosed with cervical hypolordosis. After applying cervical stretching exercise and cervical traction for six weeks, cervical headache and the activity of the muscles around the cervical vertebra(upper trapezius muscle, sternocleidomastoid muscle, splenius capitis muscle, and anterior temporal muscle) were investigated and the following results were obtained. In a comparison of the within group intervention effects of the two groups, cervical pain statistically significantly decreased in the cervical stretching exercise group. According to the results of analyzing the change of muscle tension in the upper trapezius muscle, both the cervical traction group and showed a statistically significant within group difference in the left and right side. According to the results of analyzing the change in the muscle tension of the splenius capitis muscle, both groups showed a statistically significant within group difference in the left and right side. In a between-group comparison, a statistically significant difference in the right side was observed. These results confirm that cervical vertebra traction and cervical stretching exercise decrease the cervical headache and muscle activity of the upper trapezius muscle and the splenius capitis muscle among patients with cervical hypolordosis.

Effects of Dynamic Stretching Exercise Combined with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Lower Extremity Muscle Activity and Jump Performance in Soccer Player (경두개직류자극을 결합한 동적 신장운동이 축구선수의 다리 근활성도와 점프수행력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to provide the effective method for exercise therapy in soccer player. Methods : 30 soccer players were recruited for subjects. The subjects were divided to dynamic stretching exercise combined tDCS (Group I), dynamic stretching exercise combined Sham-tDCS (Group II) of which 15 subjects were randomly allocated. The subjects were given 3 hour of soccer skill and performance and additionally given 20 minutes of dynamic stretching exercise combined tDCS and sham-tDCS for each group, five times a week, for 6 weeks. Their muscle activity and jump performance were analyzed before the intervention. After 6 weeks of the intervention, the mentioned parameters were measured once more for between-group analysis. Results : Comparative analysis of the muscle activity and jump performance between the groups I and groups II showed statistically significant difference. Conclusion : Such results revealed that dynamic stretching exercise combined with tDCS is effective in muscle activity and jump performance. Based on the current study, more effective program is to be proposed for neurologic and musculoskelectal disorder as well as soccer player. Based on the current study, studies that incorporates various combine of variable is required for development of effective tDCS program.

Effects of the Stretching Exercise of Hamstring Muscle on Flexibility and Foot Pressure in Subjects with and without Pelvis Neutral Position (골반 중립에 따른 뒤넙다리근 수동 신장 운동이 유연성과 족저압에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of flexibility and foot pressure on stretching exercise of hamstring muscle with and without pelvis neutral position. Methods : This study was performed on 30 subjects. Thirty subjects were divided into two group; hamstring passive stretching exercise with pelvis neutral position(n=15), hamstring passive stretching exercise without pelvis neutral position(n=15). Both of the group performed the exercise 4 times a week for 6 weeks. The data was analyzed by the paired t-test for comparing before and after changes of factors in each group and the independent t-test for comparing the between groups. Results : The results were as follows. There was statistically significant difference of before and after hamstring flexibility, foot pressure in pelvis neutral position(p<0.05). There was statistically significant difference of before and after hamstring flexibility, foot pressure without pelvis neutral position group(p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference of between the two group in hamstring flexibility, foot pressure(p>0.05). Conclusion : As a result of this study, though no statistically significant difference of the between groups, we suggest that stretching exercise of hamstring muscle with pelvic neutral may be effective more than stretching exercise of hamstring muscle without pelvic neutral in flexibility, foot pressure.

The Effects of the Stretching and Recreation Exercise Including Health Education on Physical Fitness and Emotion of Women in Elderly (건강교육을 포함한 신장운동 및 레크레이션 운동이 여성노인의 체력 및 정서에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the stretching and recreation exercise including health education on physical fitness and emotion of women in elderly. This study has been done between February and April, 2004 and the subjects of the study were 28 women in elderly. Each of stretching and recreation exercise was carried out for 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week for 8 weeks and health education was carried out for 30 minutes a day, 2 times a week for 8 weeks. Vital capacity, flexibility, balance and grip strength were measured using the Health Management System developed by the Korea Physical Science Institution. The scores of depression, anxiety and hostility were measured by Korean Manual of Symptoms-Checklist -90 revision. The collected data were processed using the SPSS PC program and analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test The result of this study are as follows : 1. Flexibility was increased after 8 weeks more than before stretching and recreation exercise including health education were done. 2. Vital capacity, balance and grip strength were not increased after 8 weeks more than before stretching and recreation exercise including health education were done. 3. The score of anxiety, depression and hostility was decreased after 8 weeks less than before stretching and recreation exercise including health education was done. In conclusion, stretching and recreation exercise including health education promoted the flexibility and decreased anxiety, depression and hostility of women in elderly.

The Effect of Shoulder Exercise Program for Improving Forward Head Posture (전방머리자세 개선을 위한 어깨근육 운동프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of shoulder exercise program for improving forward head posture. Method : Subjects were divided into two groups. The experimental group(15 people) participated in strength exercise and stretching exercise, three times every week, during 4 weeks. And the control group(the other 15 people) didn't participate in exercises. Exercise program was composed of strength exercise of middle and lower trapezius and stretching exercise of levator scapulae and upper trapezius. And then we measured cervical alignment with GPS and muscular activity by EMG. Result : The results of this study were as follows; 1. After the intervention, experimental group was significantly decreased in cervical alignment than control group(p<.05). 2. After the intervention, experimental group was significantly increased in middle lower trapezius musclar activity than control group(p<.05). Conclusion : Strength exercise of middle and lower trapezius and stretching exercise of levator scapulae and upper trapezius were considered a efficient for improving forward head posture.

Comparison between McKenzie Stretch Exercise and Scapula Stability Exercise on Neck Muscle Activation in the Forward Head Posture (전방머리자세에서 목근육 근활성도에 대한 맥켄지 신장운동과 어깨 안정화운동의 효과 비교)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of exercise on the neck muscles activities between scapular stability and McKenzie stretch exercise in the forward head posture subjects. Method : After measuring cervical alignment using the Global Posture System, 20 volunteers with forward head posture posture were selected and divided into two groups. The experimental group A(n=15) and Experimental group B(n=15) participated in respectively and McKenzie neck stretching exercise, three times per week for 4 weeks. The scapular stabilization exercise program was comprised middle and lower trapezius strength exercises and the stretching exercise program was comprised levator scapulae and upper trapezius stretching exercise. The activities of the muscles of the posterior neck was then measured using electromyography. Result : After the intervention, there was significant difference of a electromyography activity changes between the pre-test and post-test in the experimental group. Conclusion : This study showed that both scapular stabilization and McKenzie neck stretching exercises are more effective for reducing neck muscles activities.

The Effect of Strengthening on Scapular Stabilizer Muscles for the Rounded Shoulders (어깨뼈 안정화 근육 강화가 둥근 어깨에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was compared for rounded scapular between strechting on pectoralis minoor and strengthening on scapular stabilizer muscles. Methods : The main laboratory had an experiment of the exercise for rounded shoulder posture with 30 patients on a pectoralis minor stretching and scapula to stabilize the elastic band to divide into two groups in this study which were conducted. Results : Acromial height measured from changes of the rounded shoulder posture changes before and after workouts; stretching before exercise in the exercise group is from $94.19{\pm}3.47$ to after result of $94.84{\pm}3.19$, and the after exercise of an elastic band pre-exercise in the exercise group is from $93.60{\pm}3.42$ to $88.68{\pm}3.49$, dividing into two groups, which increased significantly. Compared to an acromial height variation results before and after workouts; stretching exercise group made $3.07{\pm}1.43$, $4.91{\pm}2.24$ and elastic band exercise group, $4.91{\pm}2.24$, which shows the difference between the two groups and was not statistically significant. Conclusion : Against a pectoralis minor that cause the findings of this study, RSP proximately shows serratus anterior and the strengthening of trapezius by exercises of the shoulder peaks which decrease in height arbitration scheme of a pectoralis minor stretching effect as shown. Therefore, it is expected RSP patients in clinical intervention methods combined with stretching exercises strengthens muscles against an elastic band exercise effective.

Immediate Effects of Release Ball Massage and Self-stretching Exercise on Hamstring's Temperature, Range of Motion and Strength in 20's Women

  • Background: There have been many studies on self-myofascial release (SMR) stretching, but there are few comparative studies on the effects of massages using a release ball, which is a type of the SMR method. Objective: To investigate the immediate effects of release ball massage and self-stretching on proprioceptive sensory, hamstring's temperature, range of motion (ROM) muscle strength,. Design: Crossover study. Methods: Thirty women in 20's at S University in Busan voluntarily participated in the study. Participants were random to release ball group (n=15) or self-stretching group (n=15). Both groups performed 3 sets of exercises, stretching for 30 seconds and resting for 15 seconds in each position. The proprioceptive sensory, temperature of the hamstring muscle, ROM, and strength were measured before exercise, 5 minutes after exercise, and 30 minutes after exercise. Results: Release ball group showed significant differences in muscle length and temperature over time (p<.05). The comparison between two group over time showed significant differences in muscle length, temperature, and muscle strength (p<.05). Conclusions: These results demonstrate that release ball massage and self-stretching are beneficial for improving hamstring's temperature, ROM and muscle strength.

The Analysis of Ultrasonography on Hamstring after Static and PNF Stretching Protocol (정적 신장과 고유수용성 신경근 촉진(PNF)신장기법 적용 후 슬괵근에 대한 진단 초음파를 통한 분석)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze ultrasonography and 90-90 SLR test on hamstring after both groups were applied static stretching exercise and PNF stretching exercise. Methods : For this experimental study, total 20 healthy university students, who were divided into static stretching exercise group and PNF stretching group. Each group was assessed before and after stretching(0.5 minute, 1 minute, 1.5 minutes, 2 minutes, 2.5 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, 5 minutes, 6 minutes, 7 minutes, 8 minutes, 9 minutes, 10 minutes). Results : Total score of 90-90 SLR test was showed a significant difference between pre and post. Hamstring diameter was gradually increased to 2.5 minutes and 3 minutes, where after it was gradually decreased in static stretching exercise group. Hamstring circumference had regular interval scores before and after on PNF stretching exercise group. Conclusion : There was a different change on hamstring diameter and circumference.
