  • Dental maturity is one of the index of physiological maturity indicators. To investigate the relationship between dental maturity and chronological age, the author took the orthopantomograms of 984 students, aged 7 through 17 years, having normal occlusion. The orthopantomograms were examined and calcification degree of each tooth on the left side was rated according to the method described by Demirjian. On the basis of findings of this study, the following results were obtained. 1. The root completion periods of mandibular permanent teeth were as follows; Central Incisor M $8.32{\pm}1.03\;years$ F $7.96{\pm}1.04\;years$ Lateral Incisor M $9.40{\pm}1.30\;years$ F $9.01{\pm}0.90\;years$ Canine M $12.81{\pm}1.24\;years$ F $11.42{\pm}0.94\;years$ 1st Premolar M $12.76{\pm}1.74\;years$ F $12.19{\pm}1.33\;years$ 2nd Premolar M $13.31{\pm}1.88\;years$ F $12.88{\pm}1.49\;years$ 1st Molar M $9.60{\pm}1.69\;years$ F $9.30{\pm}1.16\;years$ 2nd Molar M $14.38{\pm}1.73\;years$ F $13.96{\pm}1.63\;years$ 2. Sexual differences in same age group at given calcification stage were not significant statistically. 3. The developmental order in mandibular permanent teeth was as follows; a) central incisor, b) lateral incisor, c) 1st molar, d) canine and 1st premolar, e) 2nd premolar, f) 2nd molar.

  • The fauna of freshwater fish and the structure of fish community were investigated from March to October in 2001 at six stations in the middle reach of the Seomjin River, Gokseong-gun. The collected fishes (1,786 individuals) were identified into 30 species of 22 genera belonging to S families. Of them, cyprinid fish occupied 26 species, only one species (Rhinogobius brunneus) was secondary freshwater fish. Dominant species was Zacco platypus (dominance index: 24.2%) and subdominant species was Pungtungia herzi (10.7%). The endemic species of Korea were 11 species including Rhodeus uyekii (36.7%) about the ichthyofauna. In estimation of water quality by diversity indices, the general conditions of water quality of all survey times and all stations were relatively fine $(\beta$-mesosaprobic, diversity index: 2.70). But four survey sites except St. 2 and St. 3 showed severe water pollution with one or move times in total survey periods.

  • In this paper the seismic performances of 4, 10, and 30-story staggered truss systems (STS) were evaluated by observing the force-displacement relationship up io failure. The results were compared with the seismic performance of conventional moment resisting frames and braced frames. According to the analysis results, the STS showed relatively satisfactory lateral load resisting capability. However, in the mid- to high-rise STS, plastic hinges formed first at the chords were transferred to vertical members of the vierendeel panels, which formed a week link and subsequently leaded to brittle collapse of the structure. Therefore to enhance the ductility of STS it would be necessary to reinforce the vertical bracing members of the virendeel panels so that the plastic hinges, once toned in cord members of a virendeel panel, spread out to virendeel panels of neighboring stories.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate relationship between the angle of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (1st MPJ) and the dimensions of the abductor hallucis; dorso-plantar (DP) thickness, medio-lateral (ML) width, and cross-sectional area (CSA), in subjects with and without hallux valgus. Methods: Sixty feet, mean (SD) age of 22.5 (2.1) years old, were included in this study (hallux valgus = 30; control = 30). An X-ray device was used for measurement of the angle of the 1st MPJ, and an ultrasound system was used for determination of mean (SD) DP thickness, ML width, and CSA of the abductor hallucis muscle in each foot from three trials. Results: The results showed the DP thickness, ML width, and CSA of the abductor hallucis did not differ significantly between subjects with and without hallux valgus. In addition, the correlations between the angle of the 1st MPJ and DP thickness, ML width, and CSA of the abductor hallucis showed poor correlation (Pearson r=-0.09, -0.20, and -0.18, respectively). Conclusion: Based on these findings, we speculate that morphological changes to the abductor hallucis muscle cannot be representative of the angle of the 1st MPJ, and also cannot be used in differentiation between subjects with and without hallux valgus.

  • The species composition and abundance of aquatic insects were investigated by light trap in summer, 2002 at three stations in the Chikuma River, Japan's longest river. A total of 3278 adults/day were collected, the great majority (57.5%) of which were Diptera, followed by Trichoptera (35.4%) and then Ephemeroptera (7.1%). The number of collected aquatic insects and their biomass gradually increased towards downstream, whereas the number of species and species diversity index (H') decreased. 36 species (H'= 4.30) of aquatic insects were collected at St. 1, versus 31 species (H'= 2.81) at St. 3. Moreover, the relative abundance of functional feeding groups changed from St. 1 to St. 3, i.e., 'collectors' increased and 'shredders' decreased.

  • This study investigated the effects of restricted suckling (RS) on some physiological and behavioural stress parameters compared to temporal weaning (TW). Twenty Brahman (Bos indicus) cow-calf pairs were assigned to one of two groups: Calves in the RS group were limited to suckle their dams once daily for 30 min during days 30 to 33, while calves in the TW group were removed from their dams during days 59 to 62 postpartum. Heart and respiratory rates, serum cortisol concentration and body temperature were registered in cows and calves. In addition, the number of steps was also registered in calves. All parameters were recorded 24, 48 and 72 h after the beginning of the two treatments, respectively. In TW calves, higher (p<0.05) cortisol concentration and number of steps were recorded in the 1st samples and 1$^{st}$ and 2$^{nd}$ observations, respectively. No difference was found in body temperature between treatments. However, respiration and heart rates differed in the 1$^{st}$ and 2$^{nd}$ observations, respectively. In general, a significant decrease (p<0.05) in these three parameters was observed over time. In cows, no differences were found in cortisol concentration or body temperature between treatments or with time. Heart and respiratory rates were lower (p<0.05) in the TW treatment only 24 h after beginning of treatment. It was concluded that (a) RS resulted in less behavioural and physiological indices of distress compared to TW in calves, although in general, differences were found only in some variables, mainly during the 1$^{st}$ day following start of the treatment, and there in a chance of age effects. (b) Cows were less affected than their young, regardless of the treatment applied.

  • Background: This study aimed to examine the association between educational level and unable to work due to ill-health (UWdIH) among 30- to 79-year-old South Koreans. Methods: A cross-sectional nationwide survey of the 2010-2016 Korea National Health and Nutritional Evaluation Survey was used for analyses. A total of 29,930 participants aged ≥30 and < 80 years, who do not have any disability in their daily life because of health problems, were included. Educational level and reason for nonworking are self-reported with multiple choices. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine an association between education level and UWdIH by setting those who graduated college as their final education (n = 6,997) as a baseline while controlling for potential confounding factors. Results: In the age-stratified result, the ratio of UWdIH was increased as age increases in 3 educational groups (p < .0001). There was a tendency that low-level educated [International Standard Classification of Education (0-2)] participants showed higher ratio of UWdIH than high-level educated [International Standard Classification of Education (5≤)] participants in both sexes (odds ratio: 2.54, 95% confidence interval: 2.12-3.05). Conclusion: There is a clear link between educational level and UWdIH; the less the educated, the more likely to be UWdIH. Policy priority should be given to plans that can help this vulnerable social group to work and enjoy healthy lives.

  • In order to determine the functional benefits of Cordyceps militaris in the immune system, we examined the immunomodulatory activities of C. militaris using an immunocompromised C57BL/6 mice, mouse spleen cells, RAW 264.7 macrophage cells, and A549 lung carcinoma cells. Mice were injected intraperitioneally with an immunosuppressive drug, cyclophosphamide, and then administered orally with 30, 100 and 300 mg/kg of 50% ethanol extract of C. militaris (CME 30, CME 100 and CME 300) for 14 days. CME increased splenocyte proliferation and natural killer (NK) cell activity compared to 3% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-treated control mice. CME also increased the production of Th1 cytokines, IL-2 and TNF-${\alpha}$ in spleen cells isolated from CME-injected mice and in vitro, which suggested the enhanced cellular immunity in response to CME. CME also increased splenocyte proliferation, NK cell activity, and IL-2 and TNF-${\alpha}$ production compared to 1 ${\mu}M$ methotrexate-treated spleen cells in vitro. We examined whether C. militaris regulates the production of inflammatory mediators in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. CME inhibited LPS-induced NO production and iNOS expression in a dose dependent manner, while COX-2 expression was remained unchanged. In addition, CME also has free radical scavenging activity, indicating its antioxidant activity. These results indicate that C. militaris enhances immune activity by promoting immune cell proliferation and cytokine production.
