  • Seasonal variation in species composition of fish with depth was determined by analysis of bimonthly samples collected by a beach seine at the shallow water (St. 1 < 1.5m) and by beam trawl at the two stations (St. 2, 5~7m and St. 3 > 15 m) from October 1997 to August 1998 off Ippa-do in Asan Bay. Of forty species identified, 13 species at St. 1,28 species at the St. 2 and 30 species at the St. 3 were collected. The fish density was also increased with depth. Favonigobius gymnauchen occupied 55.7% at St. 1 and 38.9% of the number of individuals at St. 2. Almost of fish collected at these two stations were juveniles, and they were principally collected in August and in November. At St. 3, relatively large fishes were collected. Among them Pholis fangi and Chaeturichthys stigmatias predominated in the number of individuals. Abundance was low, but a large number of species were collected in winter. Principal component analysis revealed that the species composition at the shallower stations was different from that at the deeper station. The number of species and abundance of fish in Asan Bay was lower than in the other western coastal waters of Korea. Species composition in the study area of sandy bottom was different from that in the inner Asan Bay of mud bottom.

  • This study is a theoretical research to explore ways to effectively learn AI in the age of intelligent information driven by artificial intelligence (hereinafter referred to as AI). The emphasis is on presenting a teaching method to make AI education accessible not only to students majoring in mathematics, statistics, or computer science, but also to other majors such as humanities and social sciences and the general public. Given the need for 'Explainable AI(XAI: eXplainable AI)' and 'the importance of storytelling for a sensible and intelligent machine(AI)' by Patrick Winston at the MIT AI Institute [33], we can find the significance of research on AI storytelling learning model. To this end, we discuss the possibility through a pilot study targeting general students of an university in Daegu. First, we introduce the AI storytelling(AI+ST) learning method[30], and review the educational goals, the system of contents, the learning methodology and the use of new AI tools in the method. Then, the results of the learners are compared and analyzed, focusing on research questions: 1) Can the AI+ST learning method complement algorithm-driven or developer-centered learning methods? 2) Whether the AI+ST learning method is effective for students and thus help them to develop their AI comprehension, interest and application skills.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the quality of life reported by patients with multiple myeloma and secondly to identify the factors that impact the quality of life (QoL). Methods: 189 patients with multiple myeloma completed survey questionnaires. Quality of life was evaluated using European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core (EORTC QLQ-C) 30 and Multiple Myeloma (MY) 20. The data were analyzed using the t-test, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, Duncan test and the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The mean score for each subscale of EORTC QLQ-C30 was 53.35 for global health status, 73.37 for functional scale, and 31.29 for symptom scale. The mean score for each subscale of EORTC QLQ-MY20 was 60.49 for future perspective, 59.78 for body image, 20.25 for disease symptom and 24.99 for side effect of treatment. Quality of life was reported to be significantly lower among females, unemployed, dependence on a sibling for financial support for treatment, a diagnosis of anemia, having treatment, high score on Eastern Coorperative Oncology Group and high grade peripheral neuropathy. Conclusion: The results of the survey can identify characteristics impacting the QoL of patients with multiple myeloma. Developing appropriate educational strategies and nursing interventions would enhance their QoL.

  • Purpose: We retrospectively reviewed the results of radiotherapy for localized ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma (OAML) to investigate the risk factors of cataract. Methods: Sixty-seven patients with stage IE OAML treated with radiotherapy at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital from 2001 to 2016 were included. Median treatment dose was 30 Gy. Lens protection was done in 52 (76%) patients. Radiation therapy (RT) extent was as follows: superficial (82.1%), tumor mass (4.5%), and entire orbital socket (13.4%). The risk factors for symptomatic cataract were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazard model. Results: Median follow-up time was 50.9 months (range, 1.9 to 149.4 months). All patients were alive at the time of analysis. There were 7 recurrences and there was no local recurrence. Median time to recurrence was 40.4 months. There were 14 cases of symptomatic cataract. Dose >30 Gy had hazard ratio of 3.47 for cataract (p = 0.026). Omitting lens protection showed hazard ratio of 4.10 (p = 0.008). Conclusions: RT achieves excellent local control of ocular MALT lymphoma. Consideration of RT-related factors such as lens protection and radiation dose at the stage of RT planning may reduce the risk of RT-induced cataract after radiotherapy.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare dosimetric characteristics of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and two types of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) which are step-and-shoot intensity modulated radiotherapy (s-IMRT) and modulated arc therapy (mARC) for thoracic esophageal cancer and analyze whether IMRT could reduce organ-at-risk (OAR) dose. Materials and Methods: We performed 3D-CRT, s-IMRT, and mARC planning for ten patients with thoracic esophageal cancer. The dose-volume histogram for each plan was extracted and the mean dose and clinically significant parameters were analyzed. Results: Analysis of target coverage showed that the conformity index (CI) and conformation number (CN) in mARC were superior to the other two plans (CI, p = 0.050; CN, p = 0.042). For the comparison of OAR, lung V5 was lowest in s-IMRT, followed by 3D-CRT, and mARC (p = 0.033). s-IMRT and mARC had lower values than 3D-CRT for heart $V_{30}$ (p = 0.039), $V_{40}$ (p = 0.040), and $V_{50}$ (p = 0.032). Conclusion: Effective conservation of the lung and heart in thoracic esophageal cancer could be expected when using s-IMRT. The mARC was lower in lung $V_{10}$, $V_{20}$, and $V_{30}$ than in 3D-CRT, but could not be proven superior in lung $V_5$. In conclusion, low-dose exposure to the lung and heart were expected to be lower in s-IMRT, reducing complications such as radiation pneumonitis or heart-related toxicities.

  • Purpose: Most patients with acute low back pain visit emergency room (ER). They mostly need beds, and if their length of stay is longer, it can become difficult to accommodate new patients at the ER. We analyzed the treatment process of patients with back pain and tried to find method for shortening of the length of stay at the ER. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients with back pain who visited at our ER for one year. Patients were divided into two groups according to their length of stay at ER and were compared the charateristcs of between two groups. Results: A total of 274 patients were included in the study. Eigthy-nine patients (32.5%) were in the group with less than 3 hours and 185 patients (67.5%) were in the other group. In the comparison of the two groups according to the medical departments, the number of patients who were in group with more than 3 hours were 25 (14.0%) in the emergency department, 94 (50.5%) in neurosurgery, 66 (35.5%) in orthopedic surgery. Length of stay was significantly increased in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery (p=0.014). In addition, the length of stay was longer when computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging examinations were performed (p=0.000). Regardless of the type of analgesic agent, the median time to the analgesic treatment was shorter in the group with less than 3 hours (p=0.034). Conclusions: In patients with back pain who visit the ER, the emergency medicine doctor will early control the pain and do not unnecessary image examination to reduce a length of stay at the ER.

  • We performed serial pulmonary function test and arterial blood gas analysis at preoperative period and postoperative 1st week in 337 patients who underwent pulmonary resection from May 1988 to April 1992 at Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Seoul adventist hospital. Follow-up study for PFT and ABGA were possible in 30 % of the patients at postoperative 3rd or 4th month. In patient who underwent pneumonectomy, VC was decreased from 57.7% to 46.1%, FVC was decreased from 53.5 % to 41.2 % and MBC also decreased from 68.1% to 49.6 % at postoperative 1st week. But ABGA revealed that POa-, was increased from 87.2 mmHg to 92.7 mmHg, and PCO2 was decreased from 43.2 mmHg to 35.9 mmHg at postoperative 1st week. In patients who underwent lobectomy, VC was decreased from 78.1% to 68.30 %, FVC was decreased from 72.5% to 55.3% and MBC was decreased from 73.5% to 68% at postoperative 1st week. But, ABGA revealed that PO2 was increased from 95.2 mmHg to 97.9 mmHg and PCO2 was decreased from 42.3 mmHg to 39.0 mmHg at postoperative 1st week. The pulmonary function recovered at postoperative 3rd or 4th month and its ratio to preoperative value was 90% in lobectomy cases, but in pneumonectomy cases VC and MBC were recovered 20% and 15 % above the preoperative values. We concluded that resection of atelectasis, destructed lung, open negative and open positive cavity in the pulmonary tuberculosis were beni~t to improve ventilation-perfusion ratio, and pulmonary function was recovered nearly to preoperative level at postoperative 3rd or 4th month.
